Long-Term Outcomes Of Low-Achieving Third Grade Readers, Emily Jordan, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter
Long-Term Outcomes Of Low-Achieving Third Grade Readers, Emily Jordan, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter
Arkansas Education Reports
Research shows that students who demonstrate low reading achievement in 3rd grade have trouble catching back up to grade level and being successful in school, compared to their peers who demonstrate early proficiency (Fiester 2010; Hernandez 2011; Juel 1988). This report seeks to investigate what happens to Arkansas public school students who demonstrate low achievement in reading in 3rd grade. Reading scores from three cohorts of students are followed from 3rd grade until high school, beginning with data from the 2008-09 school year and continuing through 2016-17.

Culturally Specific Sound Design In American And Japanese Supernatural Horror Films, Delvinder Singh
Postgraduate
This creative practice-led research project investigates sound design with the aim of exploring whether cultural influences play a crucial role in shaping sound design choices in American and Japanese supernatural horror films.
This research has two parts, a written exegesis and a creative component in the form of a sound redesign of a film scene from each culture where the research findings were applied.
The scope of this research is based on a literature review and film analysis, in the form of four case studies, specifically focusing on the influence of culture on sound design. An in-depth review of the …

From Social Media To Campus Streets: The Impact Of Online Police Misconduct On Student Perceived Legitimacy Of Campus Police, Alexander J. Campbell
Undergraduate Research Posters
Since 2020, the visibility of police misconduct on social media has increased dramatically. While these specific instances have led to national conversations about law enforcement, little continues to be known specifically about how this online presence shapes college students’ perceptions of their campus police specifically. In this study, we explore how viewing internet-based, and specifically social media content, depicting police misconduct influences university students’ views of campus police. By examining perceived legitimacy of campus police in a university setting, it allows researchers to examine an environment where police serve distinct roles and interact with their constituency in a unique way. …

Heightened Uncertainty And Determination: The “Trump Effect” And College Aspirations For Undocumented Students, Carolina Valdivia, Marisol Clark-Ibáñez, Lucas Schacht, Juan Duran, Sussana Mendoza
Journal of College Access
This article examines the educational experiences of undocumented high school students during the Trump administration—a time marked by the intensification and expansion of immigration enforcement practices. Drawing on 24 in-depth interviews, we find that undocumented high school students experienced increased instances of bullying near the time of the 2016 U.S. presidential elections. Our respondents also worried about the growing uncertainty surrounding immigration policies and the future of DACA. This uncertainty shaped their plans; many students felt compelled to prioritize working and delay starting college to make use of their work permit while they had access to DACA and build emergency …

(2000) Discovering Our Voice: A Manual To Accompany 'Geraldo', Ann Margaret Sharp, Laurance J. Splitter
Collected Papers of Laurance J. Splitter
Geraldo is a story about what an immigrant undergoes when he leaves one culture and tries to 'join' another culture. An immigrant suffers a triple disruption: he loses his sense of place, he enters into an alien language, and he finds himself surrounded by beings whose social behavior, norms and traditions are very unlike, and sometimes even offensive to his own. The explanation of the leading ideas in this manual help students and teachers explore the philosophical themes in Geraldo. The discussion plans, exercises, and activities are designed to foster and cultivate the process of philosophical dialogue in the classroom. …
