The Effect Of Phonemic Awareness Intervention On Reading Acquisition For Readers At Risk, Penny Doty Jan 2024

The Effect Of Phonemic Awareness Intervention On Reading Acquisition For Readers At Risk, Penny Doty

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Reading is a fundamental skill, which does not develop naturally, but rather requires careful and explicit instruction. Phonemic awareness has been identified as the most critical pre-reading skill for primary students (National Reading Panel, 2000). This literature review investigated how instruction and intervention in phonemic awareness is implemented for readers, what effect that intervention has, and why a research-to-practice gap exists despite research supporting its critical role in developing early reading skills. A total of 26 studies were reviewed with that focus in mind. The research showed that developing phonemic awareness both helped students gain decoding skills, learn to read, …

The Kids Are Alright: Risky Play As A Learning Device, Carlyn A. Shanley Jan 2024

The Kids Are Alright: Risky Play As A Learning Device, Carlyn A. Shanley

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent work has shown that risk-taking in both early childhood and adolescence has the capacity to positively affect the healthy physical, emotional, and social development of young people. Despite American society’s aversion to risk taking and emphasis on safety, research demonstrates many benefits of engaging in positive and prosocial risk-taking, such as increased self-efficacy, increased autonomy, and enhanced risk-management skills. Literature on adolescent brain development and its relationship to sensation seeking is reviewed to determine biological motivations for risky behavior. The evidence of increased sensation seeking in adolescence demonstrates a developmental purpose for risk-taking and demands additional research to determine …

Teaching and Learning (MA) Theses

ABSTRACT

Navigating the difficulties of adolescence and young adulthood has been an age-old subject studied in fields like psychology, sociology, biology, and education, to name a few, as well as significantly addressed in literature and other aspects of culture. But, there is an important and often-overlooked area where much can be done to help this age group thrive and go on to become productive and successful adults, good citizens and quality stewards of the world in which they live. It is the participation in athletic-team sports at school.

Because of the hyper-pace of life today resulting from ever-advancing technology, our …

Articles

A key commitment of the Adult Literacy for Life Strategy (2021) is to reduce the number of adults in Ireland with unmet numeracy needs from 25% to 12%. One of the main challenges in achieving this is the varied provision of adult numeracy education. Many numeracy practitioners are either employed part time or are volunteers with few opportunities for professional development and networking with their peers. This paper details the design, implementation, and evaluation of a professional development model that aimed to support adult practitioners’ in developing their learners’ numeracy skills. This was done through the development of a new …

Pediatric Vaccination Adherence: Enhancing Compliance Among First-Generation Asian American Parents, Katelyn Leong

Nursing | Senior Theses

Background: Vaccine adherence in the pediatric population refers to receiving vaccines as per the recommended schedule, which significantly reduces vaccine-preventable diseases and enhances community immunity. Vaccine hesitancy, driven by concerns such as safety, misinformation, or cultural beliefs can affect adherence. National coverage of state-mandated vaccines among kindergarteners declined from 95% to around 93% between 2019 and 2022, varying across different vaccines. Objective: This research proposal’s focus is to determine if an educational intervention targeting first-generation Asian Americans, who have adopted their immigrant parents' misinformation about vaccines, will effectively increase vaccination rates among their children. The study aims to assess the …

Artificial Authors (2024-2025), Shreya Dhital Jan 2024

Artificial Authors (2024-2025), Shreya Dhital

Argument

In this piece Shreya Dhital frames her discussion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with emphasis on the definition of the word artificial. In giving this definition, she argues for the need to keep in mind that while AI might be intelligent it is also contrived, human-derived, and lacking in spontaneity. She further develops this argument through the use of fiction, including a short story, “The Shawl,” to show how human-written work draws on a depth of real-life experiences, unexpected human emotions, and ultimately is what gives AI its training in “learning” how to write. She implores the reader not to “waste …

Examining The Rockford Public Schools' Master Scheduling Process As An Open System To Achieve Sustainability, Renee E K Schott Jan 2024

Examining The Rockford Public Schools' Master Scheduling Process As An Open System To Achieve Sustainability, Renee E K Schott

Dissertations of Practice

Master scheduling is a high-stakes process that plays a critical role in a school’s ability to effectively deliver instruction to students. Proper care is required to ensure students have equitable access to courses and staff assignments are maximizing the functionality of the schedule. Despite its significance, however, there is little extant literature or research on the topic of master scheduling itself or its agents, Master Schedulers. The scope of this research strives to fill that gap by analyzing the master scheduling processes of a Midwest, urban, public school district through the lens of Systems Theory. Through this study, strengths and …

Dissertations of Practice

This dissertation investigates the perspectives of educators with the aim of enhancing support for the practice of co-teaching. Co-teaching, an inclusive instructional strategy involving collaboration between general and special educators, holds promise for diverse student populations. However, its effective implementation requires adequate support structures. This research employs a qualitative approach, employing interviews grounded in narrative inquiry and supplemented by a corresponding survey. The key findings illuminate critical areas where principals can enhance support for co-teaching practices within their schools. Through analysis, three primary categories emerged: resources, autonomy, and efficacy. General and special educators identified these areas as pivotal for successful …
