How Can Personalised Feedback In Assignments Help Address Gender Balance In Computing Education?, Alina Berry

Academic Posters Collection

Personalised feedback is frequently used in computing assessments in higher education. Research has shown that personalised feedback positively influences persistence in computer science. Computing and related disciplines are known to show relatively low retention rates. This includes female students, who are strongly underrepresented in computing disciplines, so they can be considered as a particularly important group for retention-driven initiatives. Female science students are more likely to act upon feedback, and personalised feedback has increased intentions to persist among female top performing students in computing. Hence, providing personalised feedback can be considered as a promising gender initiative that has a potential …

Understanding The Lived Experiences Of Special Education Teachers Tasked With Ensuring Parental Involvement In Special Education Processes, Dharmisha Tailor Narayanan Jan 2024

Understanding The Lived Experiences Of Special Education Teachers Tasked With Ensuring Parental Involvement In Special Education Processes, Dharmisha Tailor Narayanan

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (2004) mandates parental participation in special education processes, yet families, especially culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) families, often face obstacles in their active involvement as an equal team member in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings. Although there has been research on identifying the barriers families face in their active involvement in their child’s special education programming, little has been done to understand the impediments teachers face in alleviating this problem and adequately enforcing parents’ rights within special education processes. This qualitative phenomenological study investigated the lived experiences of special education teachers responsible for implementing …

From Teacher Attrition To Teacher Retention: The Role Of School Principals, Karen Balmer Jan 2024

From Teacher Attrition To Teacher Retention: The Role Of School Principals, Karen Balmer

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This quantitative study explored the role of school principals as an intervention to the teacher shortage crisis in the United States. The shortage of teachers is not a new topic in public policy and research; however, the strategies set forth in prior literature have not yielded substantive change to this stubborn problem. Using data from the 2020–2021 National Teacher and Principal Survey, this study analyzed the relationship between the perceptions of early career teachers (within the first 5 years of teaching) about behaviors of their school principals and these teachers’ intentions to remain in the teaching profession. Specifically, this study …

The Rise In Racial Tension: Metropolitan High School Administrators' Perceptions Of School Resource Officers, Joshua Stephen Mahan Jan 2024

The Rise In Racial Tension: Metropolitan High School Administrators' Perceptions Of School Resource Officers, Joshua Stephen Mahan

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although heuristic models on safety for Black students have been proposed following the death of George Floyd (Edwards, 2021), little research to date has highlighted how Minnesota educational leaders perceive school resource officers (SROs) in schools. This phenomenological investigation explored the shared lived experiences of six Minnesota high school administrators from one school district that employed SROs. Five themes were determined in the course of data analysis, including qualified advocacy for SROs, SRO contributions to de-escalating for safer schools, SRO assistance in emergency situations, SRO caused escalation, and SRO caused racial harm. Findings from this study revealed support for SROs …

Teachers’ Attrition: Relationship Between Principals’ Communication And Teachers’ Job Satisfaction, Jason Robert Menth Jan 2024

Teachers’ Attrition: Relationship Between Principals’ Communication And Teachers’ Job Satisfaction, Jason Robert Menth

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the relationship between teachers’ job satisfaction and teachers’ satisfaction with their salary, the number of years teaching, and the principals’ communication about the kind of school they want. Teacher attrition in the K–12 public school system is a well-documented problem citing many motives and causes. The recruitment of educators and retention of teachers in public schools has vastly decreased, creating a significant teacher shortage problem. Resulting complications are fewer applicants for open positions, applicants without the desired licensure, added stress on current teachers to fulfill duties, decreasing student academic progress, and dissatisfied teachers. This quantitative study used …

Organizational Factors And Teachers' Burnout And Attrition, Tony Alberts Jan 2024

Organizational Factors And Teachers' Burnout And Attrition, Tony Alberts

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates factors influencing teacher retention and attrition, emphasizing the roles of demographic characteristics, salary, salary satisfaction, burnout, and working conditions. Utilizing data from the 2020–2021 National Teacher and Principal Survey (NTPS), which included approximately 76,000 teachers across 9,000 public schools, the research applies logistic regression to identify significant relationships between these variables. The findings reveal that salary satisfaction, irrespective of actual salary levels, significantly enhances teacher retention. High job satisfaction and support from administrators and parents further contribute to lower attrition rates, while overwhelming job demands and insufficient support are closely associated with burnout and increased departures. Drawing …
