Utilization Of Empathy As A Learning Tool Among Educators At Kate Bond Elementary, Heather Demarest

Capstone Collection

This qualitative research study explores the opinions and experiences of a group of six educators at Kate Bond Elementary in Memphis, Tennessee. This research examines how these educators utilize empathy as a teaching tool, how they choose to implement social-emotional learning into their classrooms, and how their own educational histories impact their current teaching practices. Data collection spanned four weeks and consisted of six interviews. The findings suggest that empathy not only plays a role in education but is, for this group of educators, inseparable from the academic learning they facilitate in their classrooms. The educators interviewed in this study …

Relationships Among Phonemic Awareness, Phonic Decoding, And Pseudo-And Sight-Word Reading: A Path Analysis With Second Grade Students, Nona Croom

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

This study examines the relationships between phonemic awareness, sight- and pseudoword reading, and phonic decoding in second-grade students. Previous research has shown that basic and advanced phonemic awareness, sight- and pseudoword reading, and phonic decoding impact reading fluency. Students were assessed in the middle of second grade using the Test of Word Reading Efficiency (TOWRE-2), Pseudo- and Sight-word reading subtests, the Developmental Spelling Assessment (DSA), and the Phonological Awareness Screening Test (PAST-S) to determine phonemic awareness, sight- and pseudo-word reading, and phonic decoding abilities. A path analysis using regression analysis was conducted to determine the significance of relationships among the …

What Is The Value Of Value Neutrality? Exploring The Tension Between Objective Scholarship And Activist Scholarship, Julia C. Newman May 2024

What Is The Value Of Value Neutrality? Exploring The Tension Between Objective Scholarship And Activist Scholarship, Julia C. Newman

Gettysburg Social Sciences Review

In recent decades there has been an increase in activist scholarship, a specific type of work where scholars seek to generate knowledge and pedagogies that aim to solve issues of inequality through political change. The emergence of activist scholarship poses a challenge to the long-standing ideal of value neutral scholarship and, as a result, universities and academics are grappling with these competing visions of scholarship. Complete value neutrality within scholarship is impossible yet remains a desirable ideal. But in seeking value neutrality the voices of those who have been historically undermined should not have their thoughts dismissed simply because their …

Classroom-Based Simulation & Clinical Education Innovations Improve Graduate Education, Brenda L. Beverly, Emma A. Townsend May 2024

Classroom-Based Simulation & Clinical Education Innovations Improve Graduate Education, Brenda L. Beverly, Emma A. Townsend

CoTL 2024 Research Talks

Although classroom-based coursework and clinical education activities in speech-language pathology graduate programs strive to link education to relevant practice, gaps persist. Parent-implemented intervention is an evidence-based practice mandated by federal law in early intervention; however, speech-language pathology graduate programs do not provide students with ample opportunities to gain relevant experience. Outcomes from two research studies supported revising classroom and clinical education, increasing educational relevance and professional preparation for students. A qualitative study with focus groups identified key implementation needs that led to the addition of role play simulation in the classroom. A follow-up study supported developing an innovative clinical model …
