How Can An Oyster Reveal The Stories Of A Place?, Ariel Cornett, Delandrea Hall, Kathryn L. Haughney, Cynthia C. Massey, Amanda Wall

Teaching Social Studies in the Peach State

This inquiry leads students through a place-based investigation of oysters. Students will learn how artifacts, such as oysters, have the potential to reveal the stories of a place. Oysters are connected to the 4,000 year human history of Ossabaw Island that spans many cultural groups including, but not limited to Indigenous People, Enslaved People, and Genesis Project Members. These human inhabitants used oysters in a number of ways to sustain their physical bodies, structures, and connection to the land and waterways. Visible influences of the oyster can be observed on Ossabaw Island today.

Teaching Literacy: The Intersection Of Social Studies And Language Arts Through Integration, Christopher D. Moore, Jennifer Shiers, Pamela Mccabe, Jeremy Nix

Teaching Social Studies in the Peach State

Social studies education has always been an important component of K-5 education; however, as dedicated, content-specific instructional time has steadily decreased over the past two decades to give more time to mathematics and specifically English Language Arts, literacy scores have also decreased. Partnering ELA and social studies in the K-5 space allows for students to build their background knowledge in social studies, while increasing their literacy by using instructional resources connected to social studies during the ELA block, and then teaching social studies thinking skills during devoted social studies class time.

Teaching Social Studies in the Peach State

Ossabaw Island is a Georgia barrier island, accessible solely by boat and protected from development through a public-private partnership between a foundation and the state. This site has the potential to serve as a primary resource for inspiration, education, and lifelong learning. Our study illuminates how one pre-service teacher (PST) and six teacher educators (TEs) experienced an immersive site visit to this local learning environment. We highlight the importance of experiencing places first-hand and using sources (e.g., oral histories) to make content connections. Additionally, the immersive site visit experience allowed us to collaboratively brainstorm place-based curricular units.

Divisive Concepts Legislation: Perceptions Of Georgia Social Studies Teachers, Karen Terry, Forrest R. Parker Iii Oct 2024

Divisive Concepts Legislation: Perceptions Of Georgia Social Studies Teachers, Karen Terry, Forrest R. Parker Iii

Teaching Social Studies in the Peach State

This study examines Georgia social studies teachers' perceptions of House Bill 1084, which seeks to limit the teaching of divisive topics in K–12 classrooms. With growing concerns nationwide about how educators address controversial subjects, this bill represents Georgia's stance in the debate, potentially affecting social studies teaching in the state.

The research employs a survey-methods approach, focusing on Georgia's social studies teachers. Using a Delphi method, a pilot survey was first distributed to gather feedback and refine the survey. The study aims to understand teachers' views on House Bill 1084, its impact on their teaching practices, and its broader implications …

The Legacy Of Oscarville: Using Critical Participatory Action Research And Learning Teaching As An Interpretive Process To Sustain A Placeless Place, Leah Panther, Kristie Smith, Mary Mitchelson, Robert Bonner Jr.

Teaching Social Studies in the Peach State

The history of Oscarville, Georgia, nestled within the Lake Lanier region of North Georgia, remains both known and unknown, existing as a significant yet elusive part of local lore and historical retellings. This article delves into the innovative approach of a place-based critical participatory action research program, "Historicizing Oscarville," which engaged teacher candidates and educators in exploring the obscured history of Oscarville. The narrative uncovers the complex layers of settler colonialism, slavery, racial cleansing, and subsequent erasure that characterize Oscarville's past. By employing the framework of Learning Teaching as an Interpretive Process (LTIP) within a place-based education model, the project …

The Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic And Associated Restrictions On Children’S Play: A Systematic Literature Review, Aidan H. Fielding Mr, Emma Harding

International Journal of Playwork Practice

Play is recognised for its essential role in children’s development and, as such, the right to play has been internationally ratified through the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, people’s day-to-day lives were universally disrupted by restrictions and children’s ability to play as usual was impacted. The aim of this review was to examine the ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic affected children’s play around the world, and whether this differed as a function of their national context. Database searches were conducted between August 2022 and February 2023, whereby a total of …

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN, 2019) recognized the role of a culturally diverse workforce in improving the quality and cultural competence of care. The AACN identified the need to attract students from underrepresented groups, including men. According to the results of the 2020 National Nursing Workforce Survey, only 9.4% of registered nurses in the United States are men, a 2.8% increase from 2013 (Smiley et al., 2021). The 2020 United States Census reported that 49.5% of the population is male (United States Census Bureau, 2020). A significant effort is needed to increase the percentage of men in …

Intergenerational Programs With Older Adults: Elementary School Teachers’ Perceptions On Academic Performance, Jovette Brown Oct 2024

Intergenerational Programs With Older Adults: Elementary School Teachers’ Perceptions On Academic Performance, Jovette Brown

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Intergenerational programs bring together two or more generations and engage them in shared activities that inspire, educate, and advance their mutual well-being. Current literature on intergenerational programs involving elementary school children and older individuals describes benefits for both groups. However, most studies concentrate on the benefits for the older adult participants. The purpose of this generic qualitative research study was to explore elementary school teachers’ perceptions of the academic performance of students who participated in an intergenerational program with older adults. The theoretical framework consists of four processes of modeling a social learning theory component. A purposeful sampling of eight …

At-Risk Male Student Athletes’ Perceptions Of Support Efforts To Enhance Retention At A Faith-Based University, Drametrice Traronzoe Smith Oct 2024

At-Risk Male Student Athletes’ Perceptions Of Support Efforts To Enhance Retention At A Faith-Based University, Drametrice Traronzoe Smith

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Student athletes often enter college unprepared for academic rigor, making them particularly vulnerable in terms of academic success. At a faith-based university in the southeast United States, low retention of student athletes results from poor class attendance, course failures, and low grade point averages. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore how at-risk college student athletes perceived the value of support efforts to enhance retention at this faith-based university. Guided by Tinto’s theory of student departure, this basic qualitative study involved a sample of 12 to 15 at-risk college student athletes from the university who participated in …

Grades 2–4 Teachers’ Experiences Remediating Learning Loss In Reading, Lauren Suzanne Marrocco Oct 2024

Grades 2–4 Teachers’ Experiences Remediating Learning Loss In Reading, Lauren Suzanne Marrocco

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The problem addressed through this study was that Grades 2–4 teachers in a New England urban elementary school district are challenged to remediate student learning loss in reading achievement. In the district, there was documented low reading proficiency for Grades 2-4 over the past 5 years, including before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the experiences of Grade 2–4 teachers remediating learning loss. The connected learning model, developed by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, was the conceptual framework for this study. The research question focused on the experiences of Grades 2-4 reading …
