The Roots Of Authoritarianism In Amc’S The Walking Dead, Adam M. Crowley Nov 2024

The Roots Of Authoritarianism In Amc’S The Walking Dead, Adam M. Crowley

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

AMC’s The Walking Dead (2010- ) is a unique artifact in the twenty-first century’s expansive catalogue of undead-themed entertainments. To date, the show’s producers, commentators, and critics have noted the relevance of psychological trauma to the series. If the experience of realistic psychological trauma is relevant to The Walking Dead, then it should be possible for critics to articulate detailed assessments of the particular kinds of traumatic experiences that are foregrounded in the program. Trauma is, after all, an extremely nuanced and highly theorized facet of the human condition. This paper provides one such assessment and considers the significance …

“If You Want To Be The Man, You’Ve Got To Beat The Man”: Masculinity And The Rise Of Professional Wrestling In The 1990s, Marc A. Ouellette Nov 2024

“If You Want To Be The Man, You’Ve Got To Beat The Man”: Masculinity And The Rise Of Professional Wrestling In The 1990s, Marc A. Ouellette

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

This paper traces the relationship between the shifting representations of masculinity in professional wrestling programs of the 1990s and the contemporaneous shifts in conceptions of masculinity, examining the ways each of these shifts impacted the other. Most important among these was a growing sense that the biggest enemy in wrestling and in day-to-day life is one’s boss. Moreover, the corporate corruption theme continues to underscore the WWE's on-screen and off-screen coverage, well into the second decade of the twenty-first century. Thus, the paper provides a template for considering a widely consumed popular cultural form in ways that challenge the determinism …

The Diyinii Of Naachid: Diné Rhetoric As Ritual, Edward L. Karshner Nov 2024

The Diyinii Of Naachid: Diné Rhetoric As Ritual, Edward L. Karshner

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

Rhetoric is far more than a theory of communication or the antiquated ancestor of freshman composition courses. As a system, rhetoric is the process that directs, on the one hand, individual experiences with the world and structures, and on the other, the stories cultures tell about themselves. These foundational narratives (myths) reveal a culture’s metaphysical understanding of the nature of reality, the psychological understanding of human nature, and the epistemological notion of what can be known. Using the Diné Bahané, this paper will explore Diné rhetoric as naachid, an inclusive, outward-directed communication model of problem solving which functions …

From The Vertical To The Horizontal: Introducing Mikhail Epstein’S Transculture To Perplexed Educators, Sheldon S. Kohn Nov 2024

From The Vertical To The Horizontal: Introducing Mikhail Epstein’S Transculture To Perplexed Educators, Sheldon S. Kohn

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

A shift in focus from supporting or opposing vertical, grand narratives to the horizontal, the ordinary and the everyday, can lead educators to transformative developments. Educators find themselves in a false dichotomy of being restricted to supporting or opposing competing vertical utopian visions of education. Mikhail Epstein’s ideas about transculture can help perplexed educators make a shift from the vertical to the horizontal, focusing their praxis and pedagogy on the ordinary and the everyday, including objects and artifacts of popular culture. In a radical move, Epstein argues that commodification represents resistance to totalitarian controls and impulses; he urges educators to …

“High Culture As Entertainment”: Hybrid Reading Practices In A Live Book Club, Magnus Persson Nov 2024

“High Culture As Entertainment”: Hybrid Reading Practices In A Live Book Club, Magnus Persson

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

The Bushwick Book Club (BBC) is a live book club in which invited pop musicians perform musical interpretations of a predetermined literary work in a nightclub environment. What can a typical BBC show, with its strong emphasis on popular music and performance, teach readers about the uses of literature? This case study will investigate which reading practices are at work and in what ways they challenge traditional ideas of the forms, functions, and values of reading. Another important aspect concerns how the borders between high and popular culture, and between the printed word and other media are renegotiated. Based on …

Binarisms, Adaptation, And Love: Albuquerque 2016, Laurence Raw Nov 2024

Binarisms, Adaptation, And Love: Albuquerque 2016, Laurence Raw

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

I was fortunate enough recently to attend the Southwest Popular Culture Association meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico in February 2016. This was the third time I had attended the conference; I find it rather unique in its capacity to embrace academics and graduate learners in a non-threatening ambiance, where participants genuinely try to help each other rather than to try and score cheap scholarly methodological points for their own personal self-gratification.

No Side Difference Between Achilles Tendon Characteristics In Female Division One Collegiate Gymnasts Post Exercise: Preliminary Study, Phillip Hartog, Lee J. Hinkle, Gabe Davidson, Bryson T. Schaugaard, Melody Anderson, Aaron W. Johnson

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Female gymnasts have a high rate of injury due to the repetitive nature and high forces of the sport. Repetition of movements is necessary to improve confidence and perfect execution. However, such repetition may also lead to overloading the Achilles tendon (AT) and increases potential of tendinopathy. Gymnasts generally perform the same skills repetitively using a preferred leg, e.g. always jumping off the right leg entering the vault. PURPOSE: To determine the differences in characteristics of NCAA Division I female gymnasts’ AT between preferred leg (PL) and non-preferred leg (NPL). We hypothesize differences in cross-sectional area (CSA), thickness, and …

Comparing The Effects Of Pneumatic Compression And Blood Flow Restriction On Muscle Recovery, Jessica Pontarollo, Haneef Zakee, Bailey Mclagan, E Todd Schroeder Nov 2024

Comparing The Effects Of Pneumatic Compression And Blood Flow Restriction On Muscle Recovery, Jessica Pontarollo, Haneef Zakee, Bailey Mclagan, E Todd Schroeder

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Eccentric muscle contractions are often associated with exercise induced muscle damage (EIMD). EIMD can result in decreased force output, increased stiffness, and a loss in muscle function leading to decreased performance. Two of the many proposed treatments of EIMD are intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) and blood flow restriction (BFR). BFR relies on occlusion and reintroduction of blood. IPC acts as an air-pressure massage, acting on a specific part of the limb, releasing, and re-inflating up the limb. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to determine whether BFR or pneumatic compression could minimize the effect of EIMD on muscle …

Muscle Specific Era Overexpression Remodels Mitochondrial Cristae Architecture And Drives Mtdna Replication To Enhance Oxidative Metabolism, Karen Li, Bridgette Ryning, Noor Fahs, Noelle Morrow, Andrea Hevener

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Reduced estrogen action is associated with obesity and insulin resistance in both males and females. However, the tissues and cell-specific targets essential for estrogen-mediated effects on metabolism remain inadequately understood. We have previously shown that muscle-specific estrogen-recpeptor alpha (ERa) knockout reduces metabolism and insulin sensitivity and blunts adaptations to exercise training. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of skeletal muscle ERa overexpression on whole-body metabolism, exercise capacity, and mitochondrial function. METHODS: A tamoxifen-inducible and muscle-specific ERa overexpression model (mERaOE) was generated in male mice. Body weight was tracked and a glucose …

The Age Of Initial Pointe Training Has A Weak Positive Correlation With Menarche In Female Pre-Professional Ballet Dancers, Jenna M. Dodson, Annie Smedley, Adrienne Henderson, Shayla Bott, Brenda Critchfield, A. Wayne Johnson Nov 2024

Wayne Johnson

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

In the ballet community, there is significant pressure to start intensive and frequent training at a young age. For example, serious professional students often move away from home as teenagers to train at a ballet boarding school full-time. The sense of urgency in training stems from the relatively short careers of professional ballet dancers and the tendency of ballet companies to replace dancers quickly as they age or get injured. Specialized training so early in adolescence can lead to overuse injuries, psychological stress, and regret later in life. PURPOSE: We studied the impact of intense training (defined as start …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

New methods of training in resistance exercise include the use of thick or “fat” bar attachments to promote forearm and grip strength. No study has investigated how these tools affect both acute biomechanical and physiological factors of barbell exercise. PURPOSE: Investigate the effect of using a thick barbell attachment (5.72 cm diameter) on peak velocity, repetitions until failure, total energy expenditure, and respiratory quotient during the bench pull exercise performed at 60% 1RM. METHODS: Six healthy resistance-trained college-aged men underwent three visits. First visit was used to calculate one-rep max (1RM) through force-velocity profiling. Second and third visits were randomized …

"Cued At First Sight": Evaluating The Influence Of Depth On Gaze Cues, Priscilla Jussicha, Malissa Hildreth, Tamara Rodriguez, Morgan Martin, Justin Castillo, April Karlinsky Nov 2024

"Cued At First Sight": Evaluating The Influence Of Depth On Gaze Cues, Priscilla Jussicha, Malissa Hildreth, Tamara Rodriguez, Morgan Martin, Justin Castillo, April Karlinsky

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

When an individual provides a social cue, such as pointing or looking towards the left or right, an observer’s attention can involuntarily be drawn towards the cued location. Evidence for this social cueing effect comes from observers’ shorter reaction times (RTs) for targets at cued locations than at non-cued locations. However, it remains unknown whether observers are also sensitive to the depth of such social cues (in addition to the side of space indicated). Spatial depth refers to whether an area is relatively “near” or “far” from the observer. PURPOSE: The purpose of the current study was to determine whether …
