For this study, perceptions refer to the views and experiences of administrators implementing SWPBIS on the success and growth they have seen in their schools. The researcher was interested in determining whether these perceptions are related to the experienced successes. The study’s theoretical framework was derived from theories of motivation and reinforcement. SWPBIS is discussed in the study as a positive reinforcer to stimulate learners to show positive outcomes. Blended Learning In The Elementary Classroom: A Qualitative Phenomenological Study, Leslie Barger Nov 2024

Blended Learning In The Elementary Classroom: A Qualitative Phenomenological Study, Leslie Barger

Student Theses and Dissertations

The perceptions of Tennessee educators who successfully implemented blended learning in their classrooms were the main focus of this phenomenological study. Blended learning is a modality that uses stations which consist of a teacher-led station, an online station, and an off-line station. Teachers work in small groups with students while others in the class complete personalized lessons on the computer or in cooperative learning groups. Focus groups consisting of teacher volunteers from a Tennessee school district were interviewed to examine the perceptions regarding the effectiveness of the blended learning modality used in their classrooms, with a focus on educators teaching …

Pre-Service Teachers’ Questions About Literacy Instruction For Multilingual Learners, Lindsey W. Rowe, Oluwaseun Ayobami Oti, Katie Mcgee Nov 2024

Pre-Service Teachers’ Questions About Literacy Instruction For Multilingual Learners, Lindsey W. Rowe, Oluwaseun Ayobami Oti, Katie Mcgee

Publications

As classrooms in the United States become increasingly linguistically diverse, teachers need to be prepared to provide equitable literacy instruction to multilingual learners (MLs). This paper explores the experiences of pre-service teachers (PSTs) in one elementary education course focused on literacy instruction for MLs, specifically asking: What questions do PSTs ask about literacy instruction for MLs? PSTs posed questions multiple times a week as part of their reading responses and post-class exit tickets, resulting in 1,375 questions for analysis. Open and pattern coding found that PSTs’ questions focused on: 1) students, 2) environment, 3) teaching practice, 4) self, and 5) …

Kindergarten Teachers’ Experiences On Strategies To Increase Children’S Phonological Awareness And Phonics Skills In Kindergarten, Taylor Imani Ridley

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The problem addressed in this study pertained to two elementary schools whose kindergarten teachers encountered challenges in meeting phonological awareness and phonics standards. This basic qualitative study aimed to explore the experiences of kindergarten teachers regarding effective strategies for enhancing children’s phonological awareness and phonics skills, grounded in the concept of Vygotsky’s zone of proximal development. Data were collected from 12 kindergarten teachers through semi-structured interviews to understand their instructional strategies and the support needed to implement these strategies effectively. Findings indicated that teachers benefit from structured programs, multisensory approaches, differentiated instruction, and collaborative efforts; however, they also require increased …

Untangling Language Labeling And Mental Health: The Relationship Between Middle School Students’ Language Acquisition Status And Self-Reported Mental Health, Lauren Judith Mcclearn

LMU Theses and Dissertations

Across the United States, public K-12 schools are more diverse today than ever before. In the last two decades, there has been a significant rise in the prevalence of mental health conditions among children and adolescents. What’s more, mental health has garnered increased public attention with concern whether the novel coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated pre-existing or resulted in the onset of new mental health conditions. While scholars have analyzed mental health disparities among racial and ethnic minorities, there has been scarce investigation into English language acquisition status. Thus, the study described the difference among English Learner (EL), English Only (EO), …

Renewable Assignments: Comparing Faculty And Student Perceptions, Julie Lazzara, Matthew Bloom, Virginia Clinton-Lisell

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

This study examined faculty and student perceptions of renewable assignments within an OER-enabled pedagogy framework. Building on Wiley and Hilton’s (2018) framework, this study focused on the subset of practices that result in renewable assignments. Renewable assignments leverage OER permissions (reuse, redistribute, retain, remix, revise) to produce student work with value beyond the classroom. The study compared college students’ (N = 24) perceptions of value, interest, motivation, and reward for renewable assignments versus those of the instructor (N = 1) in one online class. Students reported that the value, interest, motivation, and reward of the renewable assignment were somewhat better …

The Role Of Open Education And Faculty Gender In Shaping Student Perceptions, Virginia Clinton-Lisell, Alison E. Kelly

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

Student perceptions of open education, both open educational resources (OER) and open pedagogy, are typically reported as positive in research studies. However, there is a need for controlled research to better understand the specific effects of open education. Furthermore, it is not understood how faculty gender, often noted to be influential in student perceptions of courses, interacts with open education. The current study addressed these issues in a controlled experiment in which college students (N = 413) were randomly assigned to read vignettes of course descriptions that varied based on textbook type (OER or commercial), pedagogy (open or closed), and …

Using Morning Meetings To Build Classroom Community, Erica Ekholm Nov 2024

Using Morning Meetings To Build Classroom Community, Erica Ekholm

Education Masters

Morning meetings are commonly used within elementary classrooms as a means to build and strengthen classroom communities. Grounded in constructivist theory, this study aims to determine if morning meetings impact elementary students’ feelings about their classroom community. To do this, surveys were administered to 19 third-grade students before and after they participated in morning meetings for a week. Responses from the surveys were coded and a t-test was conducted to determine if differences between the pre-survey and post-survey responses were statistically significant. Results from the analysis of the data indicate that morning meetings do impact a students’ sense of safety …

The Refractive Thinker® Vol. Xxiv Mental Health: Chapter 9: Triage For Mental Health: Faculty’S Role And Assessment, Cheryl Lentz, Dr. Karen Balcanoff, Dr. Cherri Brown

Publications

The public knows about the importance of triage in the hospital emergency setting, but few are aware of this term in institutions of higher learning. Triage is simply matching students with priority order of resources most needed (Merriam Webster, 2023). Faculty can be the first line of defense or first responders in the classroom to provide students the help they need before escalation ensues. The focus of this article was to review the need for additional faculty training to ensure professors are part of students’ “network of care” (Sarraf, 2021). Disruptive student behavior is easy to detect in the classroom …

Challenged, frustrated and motivated by my observation and sense that learning experiences are often designed and facilitated with an emphasis on criticality over creativity, I engaged in PhD studies to explore the question, How can expanding my understanding of creativity and its connection to learning assist me to re-imagine professional learning for teachers so that their learning experiences are enhanced? In this article I discuss how my practice as a professional learning facilitator for teachers transformed through this study. In particular I describe my experiences and findings from my open exploration of creativity as a phenomenon and how the organic …

Colonising Creatitvity_Combined Final Script 2024_Published, Strutts Psyridis Med, James Thompson Phd

Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai

This paper examines the evolving landscape of contemporary screen education, with a focus on the impact of progressive, constructivist and vocational pedagogies, arguing that their convergence with digital surveillance and AI risks undermining student agency and creative ownership. The authors draw on philosophical and educational perspectives to contrast and critique artistic, scientific, and vocational models of creativity and highlight the twenty-first century shift to technocratic imperatives within these pedagogies. The paper contends that techno-centric, market-driven learning environments may counter stated student-centred aims, and colonise students’ creative consciousness. The authors conclude by advocating for renewed emphasis on embodied, experiential practice in …
