Asymmetries are commonly researched in sports. Dominant-sided sports tend to favor these adaptations, suggesting the development of lean mass (LM) and bone mineral content (BMC) asymmetries. Professional and collegiate athletes are often the primary population for this line of research. Further investigation into university club sport athletes provides more insight. PURPOSE: To investigate upper-limb LM and BMC asymmetries in club sport athletes. METHODS: University club sport athletes (N = 207) from 18 different teams participated in the study. Hiking is a popular form of recreation with over 57 million participants in the U.S. Many of those hikers also use smart-watches to track their steps, distance and other variables. Anecdotally, the use of trekking poles appears to reduce the accuracy of these smart-watch measures, most notably step counts. PURPOSE: To determine if differences were observed in step counts when hiking with or without trekking poles. Volumetric muscle loss (VML) is the traumatic or surgical loss of a significant amount of skeletal muscle, resulting in decreased function and regenerative abilities. Despite the decrease in function, when one muscle is injured or removed, there is typically a compensatory response in the surrounding muscles that promote hypertrophic adaptations. Blood flow restriction training (BFR) has demonstrated effects on various physiological parameters, with similar regulatory mechanisms to bone. PURPOSE: Bone and BFR literature is currently sparse, therefore the purpose of this investigation was to perform a pilot study of bone mineral content (BMC) and density (BMD) responses to BFR. Proper sodium intake can help maintain plasma sodium levels, prevent plasma volume reduction, and improve performance, but specific guidelines on high dosages remain unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a large dose sodium supplement before submaximal cycling on cardiovascular and thermoregulatory responses in a hot and humid environment. METHODS: Nine participants (6 males, 3 females; age = 22.22 ± 1.99 yrs; weight=79.93 ± 18.78 kg) completed both trials. When volleyball players land from a jump, there is a large energy transfer that occurs throughout the kinetic chain. Time to stabilization (TTS) is a measure that represents the ability to control ground reaction forces (GRF) upon landing. Ankle inversion (INV) angles upon landing also represent the risk of ankle injury due to forceful inversion of the ankle joint. Prior research has found differing risk for injury when accounting for volleyball sport-specific limb dominance and inter-limb asymmetries. Recent research highlights the role of circadian rhythms in regulating hunger and satiety. Preliminary evidence suggests that fasting earlier in the day may better align with circadian rhythms, potentially leading to lower hunger compared to later fasting windows. PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore the impact of different 24-hour fasting windows on subjective measures of hunger and mood. Continuous Glucose Monitoring devices (CGMs) allow for a dynamic assessment of postprandial glycemic variability (GV). Using a CGM device, such as the Freestyle Libre Pro, researchers can monitor research participants blood glucose levels continuously for up to 14 days in a free-living environment. Dietary nutrients are a valuable component of musculoskeletal health and performance. PURPOSE: This study aims to describe quality of dietary intake and relationships of nutrients on muscle strength performance through nutritional diet logs in college students. METHODS: The 41 participants (21 females and 20 males, aged 20.19±1.74 years, BMI: 24.57±4.11) recorded a single-day nutrient diet record which was analyzed with NutriCalc. Maximal voluntary contractions were acquired for ten isokinetic, isotonic, and handgrip strength variables and analyzed via bivariate correlation on SPSS. Roughly 25% of people who exercise to lower blood pressure (BP) do not see a BP reduction following exercise training. Post-exercise hypotension (PEH) has been shown to predict training exercise responses. Past data is inconclusive as to whether or not BMI influences PEH. PURPOSE: This pilot study will determine whether anthropometric and body composition variables differ between PEH responders and non-responders in college-aged subjects. After school physical activity (PA) programs provide opportunities for safe participation in PA contributing to children’s health. PURPOSE: This pilot study evaluated the adaptation of a dyadic (parent-child) PA curriculum to a group setting for children in an underserved community. METHODS: Once a week for ten weeks, 17 children (6F/9M, 8±1y) participated in one-hour PA sessions which included warm-up, strength exercises, and games targeting the development of motor skills. In the triathlon, swimming is commonly considered as the most dangerous part of a sport due to the high number of fatalities that occur during this portion of the race. Monitoring changes in Achilles cross-sectional area (CSA) or thickness may provide clinicians with insights into exercise-induced adaptations and the mechanisms of Achilles tendon injury. The systolic blood pressure (SBP) during prescribed exercise (ExSBP) represents cardiovascular strain during tasks of daily living and is predictive of future cardiovascular disease. Individuals with greater body mass reportedly have a greater increase in ExSBP when exercise is performed at an absolute intensity (e.g., walking 2.5 mph).
