Whose Role Is It Anyway? A Mixed Methods Study Of Ifc And Npc New Member Educator’S Sense Of Agency, Stephen Hopson

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

The new member education period is a peer-led onboarding program that introduces new members to the history, values, and social norms of an organization. Much of the research regarding new member education has been focused on new members and risk-related behaviors and little research has investigated or studied the new member educators (NME). NME are crucial positions that influence the membership experience and retention rates of new members. By understanding how NME view and execute their role, we can create more informed training and support This can lead to a decrease in hazing behavior and more ethical leadership. This research …

Beyond The Annual Review: How Feedback Environments Shape Student Affairs And Student Service Employees’ Feedback Receptivity, Lauren Zahour

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Student Affairs and Student Service (SASS) professionals play a central role in student success outcomes and have direct organizational impact in higher education settings. As in other types of workplaces such as corporations, supervision and feedback are key elements of growth and development for SASS professionals. There is minimal research addressing how the supervisor feedback environment is connected to SASS employees’ feedback orientation, highlighting a need to explore these relationships to enhance supervision practices, feedback self-efficacy, and institutional effectiveness. The purpose of this quantitative study was to analyze the potential relationships between SASS employees’ perceived feedback environment and their own …

From Theory To Practice: A Mixed Methods Study On K-8 Teachers’ Experiences Transitioning To Urban Education, Brittini S. Piercy

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

This convergent mixed methods study focused on K-8 teachers’ experiences transitioning into urban education classrooms in Philadelphia, PA and Camden, NJ. The aim was to better understand teachers’ reflections of their experiences and the impact made by their teacher preparation programs. Connecting with Kramer’s Reality Shock Theory (1974) and Hochschild’s Emotional Labor Theory (1983), I examined how teacher preparation programs are disconnected from the reality of urban classroom experiences. This included an analysis on teachers’ expectations versus their reality and how they are managing their emotions during these transitions. In the quantitative phase, teachers (n=48) reflected on their preparation program, …

Literacy Teachers’ Self-Efficacy And Instructional Choice Within A Structured Literacy Approach, Brianna Horst Jan 2025

Literacy Teachers’ Self-Efficacy And Instructional Choice Within A Structured Literacy Approach, Brianna Horst

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

In the United States over the past two centuries, differing views on reading instruction have fueled public and scientific debate. In the mid-2020s, Structured Literacy has become a central focus in education policy, pre-service teacher preparation, professional development, and curricular design. While Structured Literacy offers a strong foundation for early literacy, it does not fully capture a holistic view of literacy.

This mixed-method explanatory sequential design examined teachers’ stance on Structured Literacy, their instructional practices, and self-efficacy in literacy instruction. Participants included 30 survey respondents and 5 interviewees. Albert Bandura’s Self-Efficacy Theory (1978, 1997) informed the analysis. Phase I involved …

“I’M Doing Good For Her”: Stories Examining The Employment Experiences Of Undergraduate Students With Pell-Eligibility, Jennifer Ruggiero-Patel

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Students of low socioeconomic status are a growing demographic in higher education, in part because of historical advances which provided more access to this population. To afford their education, as well as necessities, students of low socioeconomic status usually need to work while earning their degree. Higher education institutions are often not structured to support students of low socioeconomic status (Lee, 2024). The purpose of this qualitative, narrative inquiry was to examine the stories of employed undergraduate students of low socioeconomic status, while also studying their motivation for working while in college. The data for this study was collected through …

W.O.R.K. Towards Inclusivity in Employment was a doctoral capstone project focused on promoting sustainable employment for neurodiverse individuals. Despite their capabilities, neurodivergent individuals often face barriers to employment due to employers’ misconceptions about their abilities (Bonaccio et al., 2020). This project addressed these challenges through three main components: researching employers’ perspectives, curriculum revision, and educating employers. For research, Luzerne and Lackawanna county employers were surveyed to assess their training, resources, and perspectives on neurodiversity in the workplace. Findings indicated that employers were open to receiving more education and training on how to support their employees, but they currently lack the …

Exploring Students’ Problem Framing In Historical Inquiry: Towards A Framework For Research And Instruction, Alex Honold

Education Faculty Articles

Problem framing is an essential yet under-explored aspect of problem-based historical inquiry. This study investigated how tenth-grade students in one AP US History class framed an ill-structured historical causal reasoning problem. Data included students’ written brainstorms, students’ responses to open-ended interview questions, and researcher-created causal diagrams. The analysis, grounded in both empirical data and existing literature on historiography and problem-solving, reveals three key dimensions for researching and teaching problem framing: (a) establishing the scale of the problem space, (b) identifying relevant agents and structures, and (c) establishing causal interactions. The findings underscore the importance of metacognition, particularly the need to …

Are We Expert Enough? Confronting Self-Doubt Through Critical Friendship, Kristen Gregory, Mark Diacopoulos Jan 2025

Are We Expert Enough? Confronting Self-Doubt Through Critical Friendship, Kristen Gregory, Mark Diacopoulos

Faculty Submissions

As we transitioned to the dissertation stage, we experienced an increased sense of vulnerability, uncertainty, and tension where we simultaneously felt expert and novice in our development as teacher-educators and researchers. We embarked on a self-study with critical friendship and unpacked our understanding of novice-expert identity, placed ourselves within the context of this understanding, and reframed our perceptions. This process clarified how our self-doubt impacted our novice-expert identity, allowed us to critique our perceptions through another’s lens, and enabled us to successfully move forward. We offer our experiences as a model to support students through similar periods of self-doubt.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common metabolic endocrine condition with symptoms that severely impair women's physical and reproductive health. However, individuals with PCOS, especially Asian American women, lack sufficient understanding of non-pharmacological symptom management options, such as dietary and lifestyle modifications. This research proposal explores whether culturally appropriate nutrition education can help manage PCOS symptoms and lessen the need for medical management. The literature critique focuses on addressing the knowledge gap regarding treatment management among women diagnosed with PCOS, health risks related to PCOS, ethnic differences, and nutrition. This proposal investigates the impact of a dietary education program tailored …

Personification: A Short Film, Charles R. Adams

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

Personification follows a group of college students as they receive news that mysterious shape-shifting creatures are posing as humans. They quickly turn on each other, realizing there is no one they can trust. In the style of mid-20th - century horror films, notably Don Siegel’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), the short film explores themes of paranoia and the value of human expression in a time when generative AI seeks to replace the creative method. In keeping with this theme, the emphasis for this project was on the act of creation. Pre-production—which included scriptwriting, casting, and various organizational tasks—ran …

(2025) I'M Trying To Love Garbage (2021) By Bethany Barton, Peter Shea

Collected Papers of Peter Shea

Bethany Barton writes great books for kids about how minds change. In this one, the character’s arc is from thinking about garbage as just smelly icky stuff through empathizing (a little) with the creatures that feed on garbage, to eventually coming to see that all garbage is not equal; some needs special handling or it will clutter life up for a long time. The conclusion: I want to act like someone who thinks more about garbage, about what trash I create and where it ends up.”
