The Joy Of Embodied Learning, Leslie Bayers Feb 2025

The Joy Of Embodied Learning, Leslie Bayers

Academic Affairs Faculty and Staff Books and Book Chapters

The science of embodied cognition has established that thinking involves dynamic exchanges between the body and the brain and webs of interaction between humans and their environments. While learning draws on these connected ecosystems, persistent notions of the brain as separate from and hierarchically managing the body—an enduring legacy of Cartesian dualism—perpetuate static teaching and learning mindsets. Disregard for the body’s role in learning fuels disengagement, isolation, and inequity. This chapter weaves key findings from embodied learning research together with scenes from the author’s own academic journey to illustrate how leveraging brain–body connections can foster educational well-being. The author shares …

South Carolina Teacher Attrition, Mobility, And Retention Report For 2023–24, Svetlana Dmitrieva, Angela Starrett, Brian Cartiff

Reports

This report takes a comprehensive look at South Carolina’s public school teacher workforce through the lenses of attrition (when teachers leave the profession or the state), mobility (when teachers move between districts or schools), recruitment (when new and returning teachers enter the workforce), and retention (when teachers continue working in the state). By analyzing these data at the state, district, and school levels across 6 academic years, this research provides actionable insights into where, how, and why teachers are entering, leaving, and moving within our state education system. As such, findings can help guide data-informed strategies to improve teacher retention, …

Black Online College Students' Perceptions Of Their Unmet Needs During Covid-19, Zanita Gaither

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Black college students face unique challenges in achieving academic success, particularly when their unmet needs are not addressed adequately. The COVID-19 pandemic worsened these challenges for online learners in this group, impacting motivation and learning experiences. This interpretive phenomenological analysis explored the lived experiences of Black online college students and their perceptions of unmet needs during the pandemic. Despite numerous studies on Black college students during the pandemic, little literature has been focused on their perceptions of unmet needs. To understand their needs and experiences, this study considered internal and external influences based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and Rovai’s …

The Perceptions Of Nursing Faculty Who Experience Student Incivility Behavior, Dehlia Abaya Parsons Feb 2025

The Perceptions Of Nursing Faculty Who Experience Student Incivility Behavior, Dehlia Abaya Parsons

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Incivility among nursing students is well documented in the academic, clinical, and leadership literature. Student incivility towards faculty was less studied, and merited investigation because incivility can lead to faculty discontentment, stress, and attrition, exacerbating the scarcity of nursing faculty. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study, which was underpinned by the health belief model, was to explore the perceptions of nursing faculty who experience student incivility in the Western region of the United States. Open-ended, semistructured interviews were conducted with 11 nursing faculty who shared perceptions of their experience of student incivility behavior. Open coding and thematic analysis yielded …

African American Male Reluctance In Teacher Education, Michael L. Williams Feb 2025

African American Male Reluctance In Teacher Education, Michael L. Williams

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

There is a shortage of teachers among rapidly expanding populations of culturally diverse students in K-12 education. Minority students enrolled in public schools have been rising while the number of minority teachers has been falling. Twenty percent of teachers are from ethnic and racial backgrounds, however, schools educate majority-minority populations. What is most troubling, is that the most negatively impacted student of K-12 diverse populations is African-American males. This commentary focuses on the fact that there are initiatives and ideas to close the teacher diversity gap by creating pipelines of African American male teachers. However, the effort it takes to …

Building An Inclusive Community: Hosting An International Graduate Student Orientation, Adelia B. Grabowsky, Liza J. Weisbrod, Timothy Dodge, Juliet T. Rumble

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

In 2018, library faculty at a large, public land grant university formed a working group tasked with assessing the information needs of graduate students and implementing action plans to support this user population. From the beginning, the librarians recognized that graduate students are not a homogeneous group. Desiring a more nuanced understanding of these students, they held focus groups in 2019 to explore students’ experiences with navigating graduate school and, more specifically, the University library. One sub-group of particular interest to them was international graduate students, who make up a sizable percentage of the graduate student population on campus. International …

This interactive workshop will equip participants with a robust framework for teaching students the knowledge and skills necessary to understand the modern, multifaceted information ecosystems upon which GenAI is built and operates. The 5Cs of news literacy (context, creation, content, circulation, and consumption), as outlined in Tully, Maksl, Ashley, Vraga, and Craft (2021), will be adapted to information literacy more broadly and we will explain how that framework presents an excellent foundation upon which broader information literacy knowledge and skills can be built. As GenAI becomes …

Holistic And Decolonial Approaches To Mass Education, Deepa Srikantaiah, Jwalin Patel Feb 2025

Holistic And Decolonial Approaches To Mass Education, Deepa Srikantaiah, Jwalin Patel

Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education

This paper discusses the opportunities and limitations of mass education systems, which are influenced by materialism, modernism, reductionism, and anthropocentrism. While mass education systems provide skills-based education and training, they also reduce cultural diversity. This has consequently led to a fragmented view of oneself and the world, and several global crises. This article explores alternative, decolonial, and southern knowing, living, and being in education. These approaches call for holistic education that can bring unity and connectivity to address global concerns such as knowledge, well-being, justice, democracy, and climate change.

Public Elementary School Administrators' Perceptions Of The Systemic Factors That Relate To The Implementation Of Inclusive Education Within Their Schools, Sarah L. Mitchell Feb 2025

Public Elementary School Administrators' Perceptions Of The Systemic Factors That Relate To The Implementation Of Inclusive Education Within Their Schools, Sarah L. Mitchell

Doctor of Education Program Dissertations

This qualitative transcendental phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of public elementary school administrators in Washington state and their perceptions of the systemic factors that relate to the implementation of inclusive education within their schools. Inclusive education was defined as the placement of students with and without disabilities into general education classes to create inclusive communities, in which no differentiation is made between students with and without disabilities (Heyder et al., 2020). Systems theory was used as a theoretical framework to examine existing literature on factors that relate to inclusive education as well as to analyze data from semi-structured interviews …

Ten student teachers enrolled in various teacher education programs at one university participated in this study. Analyzing a drawing task and interviews revealed that participants recalled outdoor play as their favorite childhood play experiences, engaging in unstructured and child-initiated activities, taking risks, and creating their own rules. These outdoor experiences not …

Teaching The Information Has Value Frame Through The Price Is Right, Kevin J. Reagan, Dawn ("Nikki") Cannon-Rech Feb 2025

Teaching The Information Has Value Frame Through The Price Is Right, Kevin J. Reagan, Dawn ("Nikki") Cannon-Rech

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

When navigating library resources, students often remain unaware of the cost of information, particularly scholarly academic journal articles– and rightly so, given that the mission of the library is to provide patrons with free access to information. Part of the ACRL Framework, nevertheless, entails teaching students about issues with lack of information access, which can be difficult to teach in higher education, where students might have never lacked access to quality information sources. To teach students about the cost of information and the economic factors that prevent some from accessing information, two academic librarians integrated the Information Has Value Frame …

Empowering Learners, Shaping The Future: Cultivating Metaliteracy Across The Curriculum, Vivian Bynoe, Jessica L. Swaringen, Lauren Mcmillan

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

The rapid evolution of the information landscape requires students to be adaptable to a complex information environment. Students are not just information users but also informants and creators who act based on their social identities and social power (Oliphant, 2021). As educators, part of our responsibility involves empowering students to take ownership of the learning process, not only in the classroom but in ways that transfer to their everyday lives. Students who enter the college classroom may or may not be equipped with important 21st century skills such as those identified by the P21 framework for 21st century learning (Soulé, …

The Disinformation Vaccine: A Case For Integrating Comprehensive Disinformation Education Into First Year Writing Classes, Benjamin F. Jackson Feb 2025

The Disinformation Vaccine: A Case For Integrating Comprehensive Disinformation Education Into First Year Writing Classes, Benjamin F. Jackson

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Students’ exposure to disinformation and misinformation is far greater than it has ever been. As the ability of generative AI to produce image, video, and audio deepfakes grows more sophisticated, disinformation will become even easier to spread and harder to detect. The rapid spread of social, political, scientific, and medical disinformation has been deadly and its potential is disastrous. Security experts now warn that dis/misinformation is the greatest threat to national security. Americans at large and students in particular have a demonstrated lack of information literacy when it comes to detecting false information, and bad actors nationally and globally are …

Synthetic data is artificially generated data that mimics the statistical properties of real world data without exposing sensitive information. It is used in analysis, research, and deployments. Educational technology (EdTech) is an area where synthetic data can solve the problems of data scarcity, privacy concerns, regulatory compliance, bias reduction, data quality, data integrity, and cost efficiency. Our research aims to generate synthetic educational dataset by leveraging generative AI techniques such as Autoencoder, variational autoencoder and Copula-GAN. Our experimental results shows the significant progress in generating educational dataset and represents the data distribution of synthetic and real data.

Navigating The Hidden Curriculum: A Partnership For Student Success At Coastal Carolina University, Kimberly Foster, Loren Mixon Feb 2025

Navigating The Hidden Curriculum: A Partnership For Student Success At Coastal Carolina University, Kimberly Foster, Loren Mixon

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

As librarians who do a significant amount of introductory-level library instruction, over the years we have become aware of some gaps in students’ understanding of certain “hidden curriculum” skills. First introduced in the 1960’s, “the term hidden curriculum refers to attitudes, behaviors, and knowledge that are covertly or unintentionally learned through the schooling process” (Encyclopedia of Diversity and Social Justice, 2014). We have found that many students have never encountered an academic article prior to coming to college, and lack the “hidden curriculum” skills to properly read and understand these types of articles. Our goal, in collaboration with the Student …

Measuring Outreach In Unexpected Places, Renee Cole Montgomery, Chereeka Garner, Katy A. Miller Feb 2025

Measuring Outreach In Unexpected Places, Renee Cole Montgomery, Chereeka Garner, Katy A. Miller

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

The University of Central Florida hosts one of the largest student bodies in the nation. Just looking at the numbers, it may seem like every library event is a huge success. However, when you compare this with the number of students represented, it becomes apparent that we are only reaching a fraction of the students who attend the university. For this reason, librarians are always looking for ways to reach as many students as possible. One of the best methods to develop meaningful programming is to ask students themselves what they want to experience.

To collect as much student feedback …

Weeding Out Dishonesty: Rhetoric And Information Literacy For The Age Of Disinformation, Victoria M. Tischio Feb 2025

Weeding Out Dishonesty: Rhetoric And Information Literacy For The Age Of Disinformation, Victoria M. Tischio

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

We live in what some call a post-fact world where what is presented as true becomes true and circulates widely. Politicians lie because they have calculated that they gain more than they lose, and media outlets repeat those lies because they profit from them (Adair 2024). Fear and suspicion make individuals vulnerable to these lies (Young 2017). Like an invasive species, it is nearly impossible to eradicate these lies once released into the media ecosystem. While fake news is not new (think P.T. Barnum and 17th-century canards), its virulence has reached epidemic proportions, infiltrating all aspects of society. This constitutes …
