Reparative Research Practices: Addressing Epistemic Inequity In University Research, Gabriel Bruguier, Scout Calvert
Reparative Research Practices: Addressing Epistemic Inequity In University Research, Gabriel Bruguier, Scout Calvert
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Presentations
The main argument regarding the ‘repair’ in reparative practices: University research is a social good, subjects are entitled to be included in knowledge production, and subjects ought to have fair access to epistemic goods.
Therefore, a subject’s being prevented from making a contribution to the pool of resources utilized to create knowledge is an injustice. Knowledge produced by an entity that excludes community participation is perspectival and incomplete.
Our definition: Reparative research practices (RRP) are those that can intervene and replace other practices across the research life cycle to address epistemic harms and injustices, incomplete knowledge production, shared knowledge, and …

Transitive Pedagogy In Creative Teaching: The Lived Experiences Of K–6 Teachers Who Intentionally Adapt For Creativity, Rebekah Marie Andersen
Transitive Pedagogy In Creative Teaching: The Lived Experiences Of K–6 Teachers Who Intentionally Adapt For Creativity, Rebekah Marie Andersen
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research
Creative pedagogy in the K–6 classroom is being increasingly recognized as an essential tool for increasing student engagement, practicing critical thinking, and fostering higher-order learning. However, research gaps in creative pedagogy are contextualized accounts of teacher thinking, planning, and enactment of strategies for student creativity. This study explored the lived experiences of teachers as they constructed and enacted creative lesson adaptations and how they identified and supported creative behaviors in students. An interpretative phenomenological analysis was employed, involving semi-structured think-aloud and stimulated recall interviews with five K–6 teachers who consistently adapt instruction to promote student creativity. Findings revealed that; (a) …

Student Retention And Persistence At Jccc, Eve Blobaum
Student Retention And Persistence At Jccc, Eve Blobaum
Sabbatical Projects
Community colleges enroll diverse student populations with varied academic preparation, socioeconomic backgrounds, and personal circumstances. These factors contribute to lower retention and persistence rates compared to four-year institutions. This work adds to the research on community college retention and persistence by attempting to identify factors related to student retention and persistence at Johnson County Community College, a large suburban community college in the American Midwest. Using 21 variables drawn from Community College Survey of Student Engagement data collected online in Spring 2021, a sample of 289 students was analyzed to identify variables with a statistically significant (p < 0.05) association with next-term retention, fall-to-fall retention, or persistence. The findings reveal that only credit hours completed is consistently associated with retention and persistence. While credential-seeking and financial aid are associated with next-term retention (p = .002 and p < .001, respectively), neither was associated with long-term outcomes. Age group was associated with fall-to-fall retention (p = .043) and persistence (p = .031) but not with next-term retention. Additionally, while being married and living with dependent children were associated with persistence (p = .005 and p = .002, respectively), neither was related to either of the retention measures. These results underscore the complexity of retention dynamics and highlight the need for further research to validate the utility of the CCSSE instrument at the institutional level and explore whether these results are anomalous.

Religious Bias And Texas’S Bluebonnet Learning English Language Arts Lessons, Mark Chancey
Religious Studies Research
In November 2024, after months of heated public debate, Texas approved new English language arts reading lessons for public elementary schools (kindergarten through fifth grade) that devote notably more attention to the Bible than to other religious texts and to the Christian tradition than to other religions. This article describes the controversy over these lessons and provides examples of the various ways in which they privilege Christianity over other traditions.

A Critical Approach To Analyzing And Addressing Worldview-Based Cultural Conflict Between Indigenous Peoples And Western Science In Education And Research, Deborah H. Williams
Sabbatical Projects
Intercultural conflict exists in science education and research, I argue as a result of differences between the Western scientific worldview and the Indigenous worldview. Native Americans are the most underrepresented group in STEM, and this has been the case, in my personal experience for over two decades. Western science is not universal or acultural, Indigenous peoples have their own ways of knowing founded on different philosophical assumptions and recognizing metaphysical phenomena and explanations that are rejected by Western science and the positivist/post-positivist paradigm. Through the power of colonial privilege, scientists, science departments, and science disciplines have been able to erect …

Taking advanced science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses in high school can support persistence in STEM. Given gender enrollment inequities in many advanced STEM courses, the current study explored potential gender differences in predictors of and reasoning about advanced STEM course intentions in a sample of high school students. Participants (N = 750, Mage = 15.10 years, SD = 0.83, 50.5% boys) attending five public high schools in the southeastern United States responded to online questionnaires regarding their current STEM classes and advanced course intentions as well as an open-ended item to capture their STEM intention reasoning. …

“Change Is Inevitable”: How The First Amendment Safety-Valve Theory Can Expand Protections For Student Expression, Leslie Klein, Jonathan Peters
Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality
This article challenges the traditional notion that the regulation and protection of student expression in public schools should be based primarily or exclusively on the marketplace theory, which often reinforces the status quo. The safety valve theory is more appropriate and should be applied, especially in the current political and social climate, to inspire an expansion of student speech and press rights that would support expressive activities seeking to change the public discourse around important issues. Students who can speak freely will be more willing to accept decisions that go against them, and a school environment in which passionate or …
An Argument For A Right To Education For Undocumented Youth In Light Of Daca’S Uncertain Future, Minnie Blackman
An Argument For A Right To Education For Undocumented Youth In Light Of Daca’S Uncertain Future, Minnie Blackman
Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality
Undocumented youth are facing increasingly difficult circumstances in which to integrate into U.S. society both socially and economically. A primary reason for this phenomenon is the current antagonistic sentiments surrounding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. These sentiments have created a lack of trust in this program, with fewer undocumented youth applying for DACA status, which would allow many of them to apply to public colleges and universities at in-state tuition rates. Previous research has implied that state laws have the potential to create a property interest in education, and, as such, it must be protected from arbitrary …

Peer Mentoring In Education: Academic And Social Outcomes For Students With Disabilities, Mackenzie Peterson
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the academic and social outcomes of peer mentoring for students with disabilities, as well as the outcomes for peer mentors themselves. Through a review of research, the findings indicate that peer tutoring and mentoring have significantly improved academic outcomes in various areas, including reading comprehension, math problem-solving, and increasing content knowledge in subjects such as social studies, for students with disabilities. Peer mentoring also fostered greater social inclusion by reducing bullying behaviors, improving student engagement, and classroom behavior. It was also found that peer mentors themselves experienced personal growth with greater leadership skills, self-esteem, empathy, and positive …

Reading Motivation And Achievement: Exploring Theories, Strategies, And School Climate Contexts, Andrea L. Esterly
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This literature review examined the intersection of self-efficacy and motivation, and their impact on reading achievement. The analysis demonstrated how motivation and context support and shape students’ reading outcomes. This synthesis of peer-reviewed research (2014–2024) from ERIC, PsycINFO, and JSTOR highlights Self-Determination Theory (SDT) as a lens for understanding reading motivation through competence, autonomy, and relatedness. Evidence shows that fluency strategies (prosody, repeated reading, and arts integration) enhance pacing, comprehension, and engagement, while supportive school climates (characterized by safety, teaching, and relationships) further sustain motivation. The evidence underscores the importance of integrating motivational supports, fluency instruction, and student-centered practices to …
