"World’S Best Dad(Dy): Microvalidations In The Rural Educational Space" In Rural Education And Queer Identities: Rural And (Out)Rooted, John Mark Day

Education Studies Faculty publications

Microvalidations, small acts that affirm a person’s basic humanity, demonstrate to those who hold marginalized identities how they are seen, valued, and celebrated. For Queer families engaging in rural educational spaces where they may be the only family like theirs, microvalidations can be particularly meaningful. Several categories of microvalidation are effective for rural Queer families: learning and using names, expanding language, honoring parent roles, and validating seemingly small experiences. Given the particularity of rural educational spaces, these microvalidations have the potential of creating a sense of belonging for students and families that extend outside of the classroom and to an …

The Importance Of Public Health In College Populations: Why Vaccines Are Important, Kashish Poore Mar 2025

The Importance Of Public Health In College Populations: Why Vaccines Are Important, Kashish Poore

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

This paper examines the importance of vaccines in college populations, where high-density living environments create unique vulnerabilities to infectious disease outbreaks. Despite vaccine mandates at most institutions, research indicates that many college students possess incomplete understanding of vaccine mechanisms and importance. The paper addresses three interconnected aspects: the biological foundations of vaccine-induced immunity, the significance of vaccination in collegiate settings, and the current state of vaccine literacy among students. Historical outbreaks on campuses, including meningitis at Princeton and mumps across several institutions, highlight the consequences of undervaccination. Social media misinformation has contributed significantly to vaccine hesitancy, particularly since COVID-19. The …

Teachers’ Perspectives On Incorporating Moodle In A Ninth-Grade Reading Classroom, Cathy L. Miamba

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Effective technology use in the classroom can help stimulate a variety of learning styles and engage students through fun and exciting activities that help the students comprehend the content. Although research reported the benefits of technology in the classroom, there is a lack of knowledge of the effects of technology like Moodle on students’ academic scores, engagement, motivation, and overall achievement. As such, the problem addressed in this study was the lack of effective use of technology that affects students’ motivation, engagement, and achievements in the classroom. Using Vygotsky’s constructivism theory as the theoretical foundation and qualitative case study as …

Evaluating Educational Benefits Of A Custom Cyber Game: ‘Hvac Attack!’, Jillian S. Valente Mar 2025

Evaluating Educational Benefits Of A Custom Cyber Game: ‘Hvac Attack!’, Jillian S. Valente

Theses and Dissertations

Cyber competition and conflict remain an enduring concern for the Department of Defense (DoD). Positive control of cyberspace is crucial across the vast diversity of military operations and supporting activities. Military members play an important role in cyber prevention, detection, and remediation, but most receive relatively little training outside of the annual Cyber Awareness Challenge. Particular career fields within the DoD may benefit from specialized training in cybersecurity, in particular the civil engineering (CE) community supporting critical infrastructure protection. Prior research has suggested that game-based learning (GBL) can be beneficial for teaching cyber concepts.

Evaluating Learning Outcomes In A Serious Game: A Practical And Model Checking Approach, Matthew D. Douglas

Theses and Dissertations

This research introduces a novel computational framework to evaluate and predict the educational impact of serious games during development. By using finite state machines (FSM) and model-checking techniques, this study evaluates two serious games. Traditional evaluation approaches, often reliant on resource-intensive human trials, lack scalability and fail to provide early insight into the alignment of game mechanics with learning objectives. This study addresses these challenges of traditional evaluation methods.

Immersive Virtual Reality Heavy Equipment Simulator Training Effectiveness And Participant Performance Comparison, Zachary E. Calderon Mar 2025

Immersive Virtual Reality Heavy Equipment Simulator Training Effectiveness And Participant Performance Comparison, Zachary E. Calderon

Theses and Dissertations

Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) simulator training is an interactive form of computer-based training that can positively promote the transfer of skills from training to trainees. Even at a lower physical fidelity IVR simulators may more effectively train individuals on the operation of virtual heavy equipment compared to written, demonstrative, and oral computer-based training. IVR simulator training may also be beneficial for implementation of heavy equipment operation training as a means to promote familiarization of controls and foster self-efficacy and confidence in trainees. A multi-stage IVR simulator was created for this study that both trained participants on wheel loader operations and …

Exploring Undergraduate Students’ Perceptions Of Academic And Financial Aid Support At A Historically Black College And University, Grace Eboh

Dissertations (2016-Present)

This dissertation examines undergraduate students' perceptions of academic and financial aid support services at a selected Historically Black College and University (HBCU). Through the deployment of an expansive student perception survey, the study investigates how students perceive the quality and effectiveness of academic advising, tutoring services, mentoring services, and financial aid assistance. The research employs a quantitative methodology to evaluate four key hypotheses: (1) whether class standing affects perceptions of academic support services; (2) whether frequency of use influences perceptions of tutoring and mentoring programs; (3) whether financial aid status impacts perceptions of financial aid support services; and (4) whether …

Self-Perception As A Predictor Of Eating Disorder Severity In A Residential Sample Of Women And Girls With Eating Disorders, Emily M. Bowers, Julie M. Petersen, Tera Lensegrav-Benson, Benita Quakenbush, Michael P. Twohig

Psychology Faculty Publications

Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions with significant negative health outcomes, high mortality rates, and comorbid mental health conditions. Despite many available interventions for eating disorders, treatment remains challenging due to the difficulty in maintaining treatment gains. Understanding effective treatment processes is crucial. This study aimed to examine the role of self-perception components in predicting eating disorder severity in a residential sample of women and girls. Participants (N = 175) completed measures assessing eating disorder severity, self-kindness, self-judgment, and self-esteem at admission. Correlational analyses and structural equation modeling were used to explore these relationships. Results indicated that self-judgment and …

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Accommodating clients' preferences is a cornerstone of evidence-based practice. However, little is known of clients' preferences for their therapists' relational styles.

Methods

We conducted a secondary analysis focused on identifying clients' preferences for their therapists' relational styles, using original data from Cooper et al.'s (2023) consensual qualitative research (CQR) study. Initial data collection involved conducting semi-structured interviews with a cohort of 13 clients who had completed up to 24 sessions of pluralistic psychotherapy. Of these participants, 10 identified as female and three identified as male.

Findings

Four themes and six sub-themes emerged: (1) Clients preferred their therapist to be …

On/ In The Ground With Vietnamese Communists: The Cu Chi Tunnels In The Classroom, Wen-Qing Ngoei Mar 2025

On/ In The Ground With Vietnamese Communists: The Cu Chi Tunnels In The Classroom, Wen-Qing Ngoei

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Undergraduates often arrive in my classes convinced that great men, and a few exceptional women, are the ones who make history. Here, they think of power wielded by presidents, generals, and self-styled geniuses of strategy and diplomacy. (Henry Kissinger’s name invariably bubbles up in class discussions, like it or not.) Perhaps this happens elsewhere? In Singapore, this mindset likely takes root because the country’s record of benevolent authoritarianism underpins the legitimacy and influence of political elites. Equally, male citizens of Singapore perform compulsory military service before entering university and internalize, readily or grudgingly, that rank confers power—it is power—and that …

Widening The Net: How Cogat And Act Aspire Compare In Gifted Identification, Al Mansor Helal, Jonathan Wai, Andy Parra-Martinez, Sarah Mckenzie, Dustin Seaton

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

Previous research indicates that many academically accomplished students from disadvantaged backgrounds are not identified for gifted and talented (G/T) programs. This study examines a large sample of students (N = 10,508), many of whom took both the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) and the ACT Aspire test. We examined test similarities and differences with an eye to widen the net for G/T identification in practice. This study demonstrates that the ACT Aspire and CogAT have a significant correlation in our sample of r = .59. However, the correlation varies across cohorts noticeably from r = .72 to r = .49. The Learning Crisis In The United States Three Years After Covid-19, Harry Anthony Patrinos, Maciej Jakubowski, Tomasz Gajderowicz

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

The COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread disruptions to education, with school closures affecting over one billion children. These closures, aimed at reducing virus transmission, resulted in significant learning losses, particularly in mathematics and science. Using United States data from TIMSS, this study analyzes the impact of school closure on learning outcomes. The losses amount to 0.36 SD for mathematics and 0.16 SD for science. The declines are similar across grades. The average decline in mathematics performance among U.S. students is substantially greater than the global average. n science, the decline observed among U.S. students does not significantly differ from the global …

"Distinct And Separate Issues": Examining Us Adults' Attitudes Toward Abortion During Covid-19, Maria Montenegro, Danny Valdez, Frederica Jackson, Wen-Juo Lo, Ronna C. Turner, Brandon L. Crawford, Kristen N. Jozkowski

Counseling, Leadership, and Research Methods Faculty Publications and Presentations

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic reshaped people's healthcare experiences and access to healthcare, including abortion. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, some policymakers claimed that abortion is a nonessential service and should be restricted. In contrast, other policymakers contended that abortion is time-sensitive essential healthcare, and access to it should be protected. These efforts put access to abortion into the public arena during the onset of the pandemic. We examined whether people perceived the pandemic changed their attitudes toward abortion and their rationale for whether their support for abortion increased, decreased, or remained the same.MethodWe administered a web-based survey to US-based English …
