Implementation Of Storylines In Science Education, Jacob Cooper
Implementation Of Storylines In Science Education, Jacob Cooper
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
State standards are constantly changing and it is the job of the teacher to keep up with those changes. Science standards have recently gone through a major change, shifting toward storyline based education models. This had led to confusion among educators. This research and subsequent professional development sessions seek to answer the research questions: Why are we moving to the storylining model? How is the storylining model best implemented in the classroom? The literature review covers the where and why surrounding the origins of storyline based education models, both within traditional education settings and within indigenous communities. It then analyzes …
Strategies To Combat Plagiarism And Ai Misuse In The Online School, Brian Isles
Strategies To Combat Plagiarism And Ai Misuse In The Online School, Brian Isles
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Since ChatGPT became available to the public in November 2022, students learned to use the website to plagiarize written assignments. Educators scrambled to determine the best solution, and through trial and error, systems formed to combat this new phenomenon. Unfortunately, online schools experienced a heightened version of this problem that researchers have not fully articulated. This capstone project navigates the question: What proactive and reactive strategies can be utilized by teachers, administrators, and caretakers to prevent plagiarism and AI misuse in the online environment where resources like ChatGPT and Brainly can readily provide responses for students without their active participation? …
Supporting Independent Readers In The Middle School English Classroom By Visiting Their Local Library, Jennifer Murray
Supporting Independent Readers In The Middle School English Classroom By Visiting Their Local Library, Jennifer Murray
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
When students engage in independent reading, which is reading a book of your choice for pleasure, they do better in school. Many studies have positively correlated independent reading with higher grades, higher graduation rates, and more advanced reading and writing skills. The challenge for teachers is to nurture joy in reading, as this does not come naturally for all students. Some of the proven ways to foster independent reading for students, specifically middle school students, is to teach them about different types of books, give them a variety of books to choose from for independent reading, give them time to …
Enhancing School-Home Communication Through High-Quality Translations For Somali Parents With Lep, Abdiqadir Dahir
Enhancing School-Home Communication Through High-Quality Translations For Somali Parents With Lep, Abdiqadir Dahir
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
The central research question guiding my capstone project is: How can professional development for school translators be enhanced to improve the quality of translated communications from schools to Somali parents with Limited English Proficiency (LEP)? This study explores how professional development for school translators can be enhanced to improve the quality of translated communications delivered to Somali parents with Limited English Proficiency (LEP). Effective communication between schools and families is essential for fostering student success, yet language barriers often lead to misunderstandings and disengagement. This project draws on best practices in translation training, cultural responsiveness, and meaning-based communication. It develops …
Leveraging Background Knowledge For Science Success: A Sheltered Instruction Observational Protocol And Next Generation Science Standards Framework, Emily Meyer
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Science teachers can find it challenging to find a framework to bridge the gap between students' background knowledge and lesson objectives. I aimed to answer this question: how can science teachers use the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) model framework to help students bridge the gap between background knowledge and scientific academic language and content. The literature highlights the importance of accessing this background knowledge, illustrating its potential to bridge students to advanced language and science content objectives. This paper and four-session professional development focus on: assessing and building background knowledge in students, Tier 2 and Tier 3 vocabulary to …

The Academic-Athletic Playbook: A Guide To Maximizing Benefits For All Students, John Gebell
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
In America, it is difficult to get people to agree about anything, especially when it comes to the public school system. One nearly universal belief among parents and educators is that after-school sports are beneficial for their high school aged children. This paper will not be looking into whether or not after-school sports teams are good for kids. Instead, it will explore what aspects contribute most effectively to their academic success. In short, the guiding question for this capstone is: What specific components of after-school sports contribute most effectively to the academic success of high schoolers, and how could they …
The Importance Of Gender Inclusive Language In Spanish And English Dual-Language School Settings, Rachel Schmitt
The Importance Of Gender Inclusive Language In Spanish And English Dual-Language School Settings, Rachel Schmitt
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Trans activist and 2SLGBTQIA+ rights trailblazer Marsha P. Johnson famously said, “no pride for some of us without liberation for all of us.” One crucial step on this journey to liberation that Marsha P. Johnson spoke of is gender inclusive language, or speaking and writing in a way that does not discriminate against a particular sex, social gender or gender identity, and does not perpetuate gender stereotypes (United Nations, n.d.). Language is constantly changing and evolving, and it is up to educators to reflect these changes and model gender inclusive language when working with students. This paper seeks to identify …
Translating Theory Into Practice: Mediating Academic Advising Reform At Scale Through Improvement Science, Joshua Black
Translating Theory Into Practice: Mediating Academic Advising Reform At Scale Through Improvement Science, Joshua Black
Theses and Dissertations
Improving student outcomes at community colleges is a difficult, multifaceted problem. While no single approach can be a panacea for such a challenging problem of practice, Guided Pathways (GP) research suggests a scalable reform model that may ultimately help to improve the underlying systems and structures colleges have designed to support their students, and in turn, may help colleges to achieve the goal of improved student outcomes more consistently. Because of the breadth of the GP model’s recommendations for reform, however, implementation is complex. To be effective, each of the reforms must be localized, adopted, and brought to scale within …

Ready, Set, No: Why Not All Successful Dual Credit High School Graduates Matriculate To Postsecondary Education, Jessica Deckard Mann
Ready, Set, No: Why Not All Successful Dual Credit High School Graduates Matriculate To Postsecondary Education, Jessica Deckard Mann
Dissertations
Dual-credit programs that allow students to earn college credentials in high school have become commonplace in the United States. Early College High Schools (ECHSs) were specifically developed to support equitable access to these programs, targeting groups that are historically underpopulated in postsecondary education (PSE). ECHSs aim to close the achievement gap, increase the number of college credentials earned by high school students, better train the workforce, and improve the life-time earnings potential of a diverse population.
The purpose of this nonexperimental quantitative study was to gather data from graduates in one Midwestern state who earned a college credential in high …
Upper-Level Undergraduate Pre-Healthcare Students’ Journeys To Graduation And Health Professional Graduate Programs, Holly L. Sisson
Upper-Level Undergraduate Pre-Healthcare Students’ Journeys To Graduation And Health Professional Graduate Programs, Holly L. Sisson
Dissertations
Despite decades of research on undergraduate student retention and persistence, only a handful of researchers, such as Dumke et al. (2018) and Stull et al. (2021), have looked specifically at pre-health students preparing for graduate health professional programs and the complex challenges these students face while trying to achieve their goals. Very little research focused on upper-level undergraduate students pursuing graduate health professional programs, such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant, or similar graduate health professional programs excluding medical school. To help fill this gap, my study focused on the experiences of pre-healthcare students as they navigated their undergraduate …

This inquiry-based research aims to investigate the impact of technology integration on the understanding and engagement of fourth graders in mathematics. This study aims to address the following questions: How does integrating technology in fourth-grade mathematics impact students' understanding of math concepts? What impact does …
Using Digital Word Puzzles To Develop Executive Functioning Skills In Adolescent Males With Known Skills Deficits, Lisa K. Griffith
Using Digital Word Puzzles To Develop Executive Functioning Skills In Adolescent Males With Known Skills Deficits, Lisa K. Griffith
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Research shows that game-based interventions can effectively help develop some executive functioning (EF) skills. However, the majority of the interventions previously studied involve specialized and/or expensive games. The author believes that using commonly available word-based digital puzzles to “warm up” students’ brains can lead to improved EF skills, leading to students being more motivated to engage in learning, which in turn promotes greater success in the classroom as well as in life in general. Two adolescent males were studied for five weeks (total of 17 school days) using Merriam-Webster’s Blossom (2025) as an intervention for EF skills at the start …
The Impact Of Self-Reflection On Teacher Growth And Effectiveness, Thatcher Goodale
The Impact Of Self-Reflection On Teacher Growth And Effectiveness, Thatcher Goodale
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
This study explored how consistent self-reflection can support teacher growth and improve instruction. Over a four-week period in a 7th-grade computer science class, I used daily reflections, journal entries, and informal observations to see how reflection influenced my teaching and student engagement. Small, regular check-ins after each class helped me adjust lesson pacing, improve transitions, and respond more intentionally to student needs. Themes like time management, classroom flow, creativity, and collaboration came up often, but student engagement was mentioned the most. Without major changes to the curriculum, reflection helped me teach with more purpose and confidence. While this study focused …

Looping Classrooms, Kelly Fitzgerald
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
This inquiry-based Capstone Project examines the effects of classroom looping, where students remain with the same teacher across consecutive years. One or more teachers looped with their students from fourth to fifth grade. The study focuses on a group of students from a low-income and rural elementary school setting. Using student surveys and reflections, the researcher examines the influence of peer connections, student-teacher relationships, and overall student satisfaction with looping. A majority of the students reported positive experiences with looping, including positive relationships with their teachers, increased emotional support, and improved classroom identity. However, some students reported challenges such as …
