Leading Cultural Change To Impact Workplace Satisfaction Of Teachers With A Focus On Teacher Career Cycle, Scott H. Ingwerson

Student Work

School culture has a profound effect on both students and staff. Teacher job satisfaction is often not the focus when student achievement is discussed, schools may be overlooking a very important factor. In this study, the perception of teacher’s job satisfaction was measured in 2013 based on the 40 Developmental Assets Framework. Grounded on the data collected, intentional cultural developmental strategies and structures were implemented by the leadership team. Then …

A Program Evaluation Of A Summer Program Designed To Reduce Summer Learning Loss, Kara L. Hutton Apr 2015

A Program Evaluation Of A Summer Program Designed To Reduce Summer Learning Loss, Kara L. Hutton

Student Work

Public School Districts across the nation are facing the challenge of increasing student achievement. Learning that is lost over the summer has been found to be a key factor of why some students fall further and further behind their peers. Higher socio-economic students actually can make gains in reading over the summer, while students in poverty may lose one to two months of achievement. In mathematics, all students may experience a summer learning loss, while students in poverty may lose up to three months. Although students in poverty learn at similar rates as their peers during the school year, the …

Let Them Learn English: Reader Response To Media Discourse About Dual Language Education, Jia Lu, Theresa Catalano

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Despite the multilingual reality and the effectiveness of dual language education (DLE) being adequately documented by language and literacy researchers, the US is progressing at a slower rate in embracing and implementing DLE compared with other countries. The purpose of this study is to understand why progress in this area has been so slow by examining the public discourse that frequently shapes policy decisions about DL programs. To do this, the authors analyzed reader comments of 16 online news articles that centered on DLE. Findings revealed the intersection of language, national identity, race, and power relationships, which could be categorized …

Unpacking Organizational Alignment : The View From Theory And Practice., Meera Alagaraja, Kevin Rose, Brad Shuck, Matt Bergman

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

The importance of alignment is widely acknowledged in organizations. Yet, we know little about how alignment is created or measured over time at multiple levels in the organization. This paper attempts to expand and enrich different perspectives and types of alignment that exist and occur in organizations. Throughout, we elaborate on how organizational alignment is understood and defined in the extant literature. Next, we propose a framework for examining different perspectives of organizational alignment emphasizing conceptual similarities as well as distinctiveness. Our core contribution is an emergent theoretical framework that expands on the concept of organizational alignment. We find that …

Analysis Of Learning Assignments Applying Erp-Systems In Textbooks For Commercial Colleges In Austria, Daniel Kombacher Apr 2015

Analysis Of Learning Assignments Applying Erp-Systems In Textbooks For Commercial Colleges In Austria, Daniel Kombacher

International Journal for Business Education

Enterprise-Resource-Planning-Systems (ERP-Systems) – such as SAP, BaaN, Infor LN, MS Dynamics, WinLine and BMD – are becoming increasingly important for private and public enterprises and NGOs around the globe. The use of ERP-Systems leads to changing (vocational) working routines. ERP-Systems are therefore an important subject for vocational education and – from a scientific viewpoint – a research topic of high interest. However, only a very limited number of journal articles are available that address the use of ERP-systems in the context of business education. This article contributes to this field of research with an analysis of learning assignments applying ERP-Systems. …

Engagement With A Custom-Made Online System Designed To Support Undergraduate Work Placement, Claire E. Mcdonnell, Francis Pedreschi

Stream 3: Digital Campus and Universal Design

This paper describes an online system that was custom-made to allow BSc Optometry undergraduates to submit work electronically, while off-campus on work placement. One of the main aims of the system was to allow internal (college) supervisors to provide students with timely, formative feedback on work submitted. The system was piloted in academic year 2013-14 and an intrinsic case study was carried out to examine the engagement of the students, the external placement supervisors and the internal supervisors with the system. Engagement was gauged by examining all subjects’ interaction with the system and by asking them to complete a post …

Evolving Strategies For Online Learning In Graduate Courses In Education, Maurice Digiuseppe, Roland Van Oostveen, Diana Petrarca

Stream 3: Digital Campus and Universal Design

Internet-based learning is becoming more commonplace in post-secondary settings in canada and internationally, though, often, instructors struggle to develop effective programming for their students. In this article, we present three cases in which instructors critically reflect on their experiences designing and implementing online learning environments for various courses in the graduate programs in education at the university of ontario institute of technology (uoit) in oshawa, canada. The first case focuses on an instructor’s efforts to develop courses involving problem-based learning (pbl) on the basis of a faculty-developed conceptual framework. In the second case, an instructor describes how her experiences as …

Problematizing Second Language (L2) Learning Using Emerging Vr Systems, Linda Butler, Flaithri Neff Apr 2015

Problematizing Second Language (L2) Learning Using Emerging Vr Systems, Linda Butler, Flaithri Neff

Stream 3: Digital Campus and Universal Design

There is little doubt that there is nothing like being immersed in the country of the language you are trying to learn. Not only do students who wish to learn English as a Second Language (ESL) enjoy the experience of inter-cultural learning contexts from a sensory and affective sense, it is often the case that they gain emotional and intellectual maturity while living abroad. The reality of travelling abroad to learn English however for many International students is often a difficult transitional one especially at pre-sessional or beginner/foundation levels in terms of language acquisition, expense, feelings of isolation while in …

Making Free Online Learning Sustainable Through Reduction Of Production Costs, Rita Day, Brian Mulligan Apr 2015

Making Free Online Learning Sustainable Through Reduction Of Production Costs, Rita Day, Brian Mulligan

Stream 3: Digital Campus and Universal Design

A major reservation about Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) is that they are extremely expensive to develop and deliver and for most institutions this cannot be justified on a sustainable financial basis. As part of the MOOC technological revolution, costs and funding opportunities have been cited as reasons not to proceed (Gaebel, Kupriyanova, Morais, and Colucci, 2014). Whereas, the findings to date show that this may not be the case for all, educational institutions are often eager to engage technology and embed it into programmes (Hollands, and Devayani, 2014). There are many examples of excellent learning materials being created and …

Incorporating Asynchronous Video Discussion Prompts To Observe Community Of Inquiry Within Online Undergraduate Courses, Bonnie J. Covelli

All Capstone Projects

Distance education, including online learning and e-learning, continues to increase in higher education. Research indicates that online learning supports a constructivism (or student-centered, collaborative) approach to learning, and the sense of community is important to students in the online setting. The Community of Inquiry (Col) framework further defines a sense of community as satisfaction in the teaching presence, social presence, and cognitive presence of learning. Using the constructivist approach and the Col framework, online instructors have the ability to use different techniques and tools with asynchronous discussion prompts to foster a sense of community in the online learning setting.
