The Influence Of Perspective Taking And Empathy On Students Using The Cultural Approach To History, Victor M. Salazar Apr 2015

The Influence Of Perspective Taking And Empathy On Students Using The Cultural Approach To History, Victor M. Salazar

Theses and Dissertations

Challenges to teaching history have precipitated a number of teaching strategies whereby teachers have achieved mixed success. The Cultural Approach to History (CAH) has been shown to be an effective teaching strategy from its inception in the late 1960s. Advances in neuroscience revealing how the brain functions in the learning process have been proven to show that stimulating affect in students during instruction may result in a greater long-term learning outcomes than if students underwent traditional lecture-based instruction. Students using the CAH have the opportunity to take the perspective of others in addition to their engaging cognitive capabilities thus leading …

Sample Syllabus For Eng 4460: The Literature Of Conflict, Andrew Strombeck

Ten Years of the Dayton Literary Peace Prize Class Materials

Since 2005, the Dayton Literary Peace Prize has been awarded to works of literary fiction and nonfiction that recognize "the power of the written word to promote peace." Each year, two fiction and two nonfiction works are chosen. In conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the prize, this course will examine seven winners and ask how their words "promote peace"—which is probably a more vexing question than it first seems. We will read these works alongside critical essays that provide frameworks for thinking through how literature narrates atrocity, creates connections between different groups, fosters ways of thinking that avoid conflict, …

Creating A Cycle Of Continuous Improvement Through Instructional Rounds, Catherine L. Meyer-Looze Apr 2015

Creating A Cycle Of Continuous Improvement Through Instructional Rounds, Catherine L. Meyer-Looze

Peer Reviewed Articles

Instructional Rounds is a continuous improvement strategy that focuses on the technical core of educational systems as well as educators collaborating side-by-side. Concentrating on collective learning, this process only makes sense within an overall strategy of improvement. This case study examined the Instructional Rounds process in a northern Michigan school district. Pressure points identified included a culture of distrust, an unclear definition of learner outcomes and effective teaching, and a status quo view of improvement. Supportive strategies for change were identified and continue to be implemented as part of the district’s continuous improvement strategy

Children Birth To Age Three With Feeding Difficulties: Systems Level Perspectives Of Supports, Needs, And Interagency Collaboration, Sondra M. Stegenga

Masters Theses

Early identification and treatment of feeding difficulties greatly improves outcomes for young children with feeding difficulties (Williams et al., 2006). However, identifying and addressing feeding difficulties in young children, birth to age three, is complex; requiring not only interdisciplinary collaboration (Arvedson, 2008; Bruns & Thompson, 2010; Lefton-Greif & Arvedson, 2008; Williams et al., 2006) but also interagency collaboration due to the various partners involved in service provision for young children, birth to age three (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, 2004). When such interagency collaboration is needed, systems level structural supports are shown to levy the greatest impact on outcomes (Tseng …

Talking To Learn: A Formative Experiment On Constructing Meaning Though Collaborative Classroom Interactions, Mary L. Hoch

Dissertations

As a result of reform efforts, national standards and assessments set the stage for teaching and learning in many classrooms. This establishes a particular classroom environment and often leads to behaviorist instructional methods, such as recitation. Utilizing a formative experiment design, this research integrated constructivist modes of learning and explored how these modes could be adjusted to help six struggling readers construct meaning. This study took place in a third grade classroom during the teacher’s daily scheduled comprehension instruction time. The classroom environment, as perceived by the teacher, as well as the effects of national standards and assessments on comprehension …

Strengthening Democracy By Increasing Youth Political Knowledge And Engagement, Laura Langer Apr 2015

Strengthening Democracy By Increasing Youth Political Knowledge And Engagement, Laura Langer

Political Science Theses and Capstones

Even though the United States had historically high voter turnout in 2008 and 2012, there remains troubling patterns pertaining to political engagement and knowledge among its least educated youth. The literature and theory suggests that if the United States educational systems increase the amount of civic education courses, extracurricular activity, and youth volunteering opportunities in high schools, especially among the most disadvantaged youth, it will lead to an increase in political knowledge and engagement. I test this idea with data from the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) post-2012 election youth survey. The CIRCLE data …

Leaders All: Teacher-Led Participatory Action Research At The Middle School Level, Corinna Crafton Apr 2015

Leaders All: Teacher-Led Participatory Action Research At The Middle School Level, Corinna Crafton

All Theses And Dissertations

Classroom teachers who wish to have voice in decisions that influence their daily practice often confront barriers, causing some to leave the classroom altogether to become school administrators. There is little participatory action research conducted by classroom-based educators on teachers’ perceptions of transcending the organizational, political, and cultural barriers to their own leadership. The dearth of such studies exemplifies an acute example of the marginalization experienced by many classroom teachers.

By examining the perceptions of teachers working in a distributed leadership practice, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of how teachers become agents of transformation without leaving their positions …
