Transforming Precalculus Instruction: Evidence-Based Course Design, Wendy M. Smith Apr 2015

Transforming Precalculus Instruction: Evidence-Based Course Design, Wendy M. Smith

Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series

The UNL Mathematics Department has been focused on transforming precalculus instruction since 2012, with a goal of greater levels of student success. A short-term measure of student success is the passing rate (C or better), which has jumped from an average of 62% (2007-2011) to 80% for the past two falls. A longer-term measure of student success is recruiting and retaining undergraduates to STEM disciplines and careers. In this talk I will share specifics of the reform efforts (the who-what-when-where-why-and-how), and also share preliminary results from the research we have simultaneously been conducting into the reform efforts.

The Effects Of An Early Intervention Mastery Activity In The Mathematics Department, Nathan Wakefield, Joe Champion, Doug Dailey, Jessalyn Bolkema

Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series

At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, nearly 1000 students sign up for one of College Algebra, or College Algebra and Trigonometry every fall. Of these students, more than 75% are first time freshman. Finding ways to motivate and encourage these students together with early identification strategy for struggling students is critical to success not just in the math course, but also in a student’s university career. This presentation will discuss the design and outcomes an early intervention mastery activity with the broad goals of helping students recall previously learned mathematics, and identifying students who are at risk for failure, all within …

Using Resting-State Functional Connectivity Of The Basal Ganglia As A Biomarker For Symptoms Of Parkinson's Disease, Neal Modi '16, Lucy Yuan '16, Todd B. Parrish Apr 2015

Using Resting-State Functional Connectivity Of The Basal Ganglia As A Biomarker For Symptoms Of Parkinson's Disease, Neal Modi '16, Lucy Yuan '16, Todd B. Parrish

Student Publications & Research

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by the degeneration of nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons, resulting in dysfunctional cortico-striato-thalamiccortical loops. Parkinson's disease patients suffer from chronic movement disabilities as well as cognitive impairments and other nonmotor symptoms, which implies a systemwide effect on overall brain function. Because the disease currently has no cure, the discovery of a biomarker for specific PD symptoms is crucial for monitoring treatment potency. This study aimed to evaluate the validity of using functional connectivity between regions of the basal ganglia as a biomarker for specific symptoms of PD.

Teaching Tolkien: Language, Scholarship, And Creativity, Adam Kotlarczyk Apr 2015

Teaching Tolkien: Language, Scholarship, And Creativity, Adam Kotlarczyk

Faculty Publications & Research

Why Tolkien?

Let us start with the obvious—if cynical—question, almost certain to come from a skeptical administrator or colleague: why would any serious, self-respecting English teacher want to teach an author whose work is about dragons, fairies, and the fantastic? With all the increased attention to standardized testing and with the demand for rigor in read- ings in the average English curriculum, choosing a popular text might raise eyebrows among critics. The question that an English teacher may be asked (or indeed, may ask him- or herself) is: doesn't teaching Tolkien as "serious" literature just fan those flames?

Education Masters

ADHD is one of the fastest growing diagnoses in America. With a growing diagnosis comes a growing rate of prescriptions to alleviate the symptoms associated with ADHD. This prescription medication can be seen as a quick fix in order to create proper student behaviors within the classroom. This observational case study was completed to see whether or not students who are on prescription medication for ADHD behaviorally outperformed those students who are not on prescription medication for ADHD. Unaware that they were being observed, students were monitored over eight categories throughout two class periods during the day. Research shows that …

Solving The Achievement Gap In Mathematics: It's Not Just A Numbers Game, Renee Perreaud Apr 2015

Solving The Achievement Gap In Mathematics: It's Not Just A Numbers Game, Renee Perreaud

Education Masters

I conducted my research reflecting the opinions and thoughts of my colleagues and administrators. I exposed them to questions about their experience educating a diverse group of students, how they feel the impact of the achievement gap in mathematics has been exposed in their classrooms and what they are doing as educators to help close it. They discussed how difficult and challenging it can be to teach students who live in poverty and come from difficult home circumstances. They shed light on how to motivate students when many other social factors going on in their lives seem more important. Above …

Best Practices For Transitioning Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorder Into Adulthood., Lindsay Frank

Education Masters

As the numbers of individuals who are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder grow, education has focused on how to help them learn in classroom settings with peers. But what happens to them when they graduate from high school? How do they translate the skills they learned in school to everyday adult life? To answer this question it is important to examine how children with Autism Spectrum Disorder learn throughout their lives, from early childhood, adolescents, and into adulthood. With this information there are numerous strategies that can be utilized in early adolescences to create an effective transition program that enables …

The Effectiveness Of Applied Behavior Analysis, Megan Kehoe

Education Masters

There are many different ways to educate students on the Autism Spectrum. Applied Behavior Analysis is one educational tool that has shown to be an effective tool in showing progress with students that are on the Autism Spectrum. ABA allows students to show progress at their own pace using a repetitive educational strategy. Educators that have implemented ABA have voiced their opinion on why it is effective and have given their input on what has worked best for them and some of the struggles that have gone through to make sure that it is an effective tool for their students.

Life With Cortical Dysplasis. A Case Study Of A Sixth Grader., Brittany Gerlach Apr 2015

Life With Cortical Dysplasis. A Case Study Of A Sixth Grader., Brittany Gerlach

Education Masters

Cortical Dysplasia is a rare brain malformation that results in multiple life challenges such as hemiparesis (cerebral palsy on half of the body), and seizures. For some people, with medication and life long therapies, the side effects dealing with cortical dysplasia can be minimized. This can lead to those living a rather normal life. In some cases, more drastic measures have to be taken. A hemispherectomy is the removal of the entire hemisphere of the brain, typically the malformed side. The idea of this surgery is to remove the part of the brain causing life-threatening problems. In cases for those …

Beliefs About Toddler And Care: A New Measure For Infant Toddler Teachers, Treshawn L Anderson Apr 2015

Beliefs About Toddler And Care: A New Measure For Infant Toddler Teachers, Treshawn L Anderson

Open Access Dissertations

The first three years in a child's life are particularly important, as this is a critical time for development in all learning domains, however some of the settings in which infants and toddlers are learning and developing (i.e., child care) have been found to be of despairingly low to mediocre quality, with teacher qualifications also being minimal (Burchinal, Roberts, Nabors, & Bryant, 1996; Howes, Whitebook, & Phillips, 1992; Ruzek, Burchinal, Farkas, & Duncan, 2014; National Survey of Early Care and Education [NSECE] Project Team, 2013, 2014; Vandell & Wolfe, 2000). With more than 60% of children birth to age three …

Developing An Early-Alert System To Promote Student Visits To Tutor Center, Qijie (Vicky) Cai, Carrie Lewis Miller, Jude Higdon Apr 2015

Developing An Early-Alert System To Promote Student Visits To Tutor Center, Qijie (Vicky) Cai, Carrie Lewis Miller, Jude Higdon

iSALT Outcomes: Publications, Presentations, and Other Scholarly Works

An early-alert system (MavCLASS) was developed and piloted in a large gateway math class with 611 freshman students to identify academically at-risk students and provide alert messages. It was found that there was significant association between the alert messages students received and their visits to the university’s tutor center. Further, the achievement of students who visited the tutor center was improving over the semester. Evidence from the study suggests that an early-alert system focused on personalized feedback from instructional staff correlates with the help-seeking behaviors of at-risk students in large gateway classes.

An Examination Of Middle School Readiness Variables For Students From Two K-5 Elementary Sending Schools In Missouri, Walter James Belcher Apr 2015

An Examination Of Middle School Readiness Variables For Students From Two K-5 Elementary Sending Schools In Missouri, Walter James Belcher

Dissertations

The transition process from elementary school to middle school has created numerous obstacles for all stakeholders. Early adolescents encounter emotional and physiological challenges as their bodies mature (Lester, Waters, & Cross, 2013). These challenges have a major impact on the academic achievement of the students (Musoleno & White, 2010). There is a direct connection between a student’s successes in middle school and how well the student will do in high school, making the transition process even more important (Andrews & Bishop, 2012). The purpose of this study was to identify predictors which could aid in easing the transition into middle …

The Impact Of Poverty On Elementary Academic Achievement In One Rural Elementary School In Missouri, Seth Allen Huddleston

Dissertations

The impact of poverty on one rural elementary school’s student achievement was measured based on formative and summative assessment data. Student assessment data were examined to determine if strong relationships can be linked between students living in poverty and academic achievement. Additionally, parental perceptions were addressed as to whether or not parents are engaged in their child’s education, and if so, does this engagement impact student achievement. The topic was chosen for the relevancy of determining students’ instructional needs and how best to move the elementary in a positive direction academically. The socio-economic levels of families in the area studied …

An Examination Of Chronic Absenteeism As Related To Performance On End-Of-Year Missouri State Assessments, John Wesley Collins Apr 2015

An Examination Of Chronic Absenteeism As Related To Performance On End-Of-Year Missouri State Assessments, John Wesley Collins

Dissertations

This study was designed to examine if a correlation exists between regular school attendance and academic success. As an outcome of concern for educational expectations in American schools, the government of the United States increased accountability for schools through the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, requiring schools improve student achievement levels in designated core academic areas (Tyre, Feuerborn, & Pierce, 2011). Unlike the findings of Robert Balfanz and Vaughan Byrnes (2012) of Johns Hopkins University, which found most educational agencies do not keep detailed statistics regarding student attendance, Missouri public school districts do have an accountability structure in …

Retaining Rural Educators: Characteristics Of Teacher Retention Practices Of Rural School Districts, Joshua C. Phillips

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the reasons high-quality rural veteran educators choose to remain in small, rural district settings and to identify common factors among small rural school districts that have high numbers of highly qualified veteran teachers. The study is relevant to school leaders and school boards within small rural communities seeking to develop policies and encourage strategies to keep high-quality educators from leaving districts. The motivation-hygiene theory of job satisfaction developed by Herzberg, Mausner, and Snyderman (1993), coupled with Rosenholtz’s (1989) 10 essential components for working together were utilized throughout the study to evaluate the …
