Adult Learners' Perceptions Of Mooc Motivation, Success, And Completion: A Virtual Ethnographic Study, Jamie Lynn Loizzo
Adult Learners' Perceptions Of Mooc Motivation, Success, And Completion: A Virtual Ethnographic Study, Jamie Lynn Loizzo
Open Access Dissertations
Massive open online courses (MOOCs) have been credited with disrupting the traditional classroom and challenging distance education models in higher education. MOOCs were developed with the intention of opening up education to the masses, specifically those in developing countries who could not readily access educational resources or opportunities. However, early quantitative reports have shown that MOOC participants tend to be adult learners who already possess bachelor's or master's degrees. Additionally, MOOC completion rates have been reported to be significantly low with less than 15% of enrolled students actually completing them. This has led to questions about who the true target …

Making Oral Communication A Successful Part Of The Common Core, Jon A. Hess
Making Oral Communication A Successful Part Of The Common Core, Jon A. Hess
Communication Faculty Publications
Adoption of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) represents the first time that oral communication has been included in the curriculum requirements for K–12 education in many states. If done well, this change will provide important benefits to students. However, effective implementation will require collaboration among policymakers, educators, and experts in oral communication.
As educators work to strengthen primary and secondary education in the United States, many agree that schools need educational standards that are grounded in today’s needs and shared across states. The CCSS have emerged as a potential solution, and the majority of states have adopted these standards. …

The Historical Role Of Women In Higher Education, Patsy Parker
The Historical Role Of Women In Higher Education, Patsy Parker
Administrative Issues Journal
Historically, females, as compared to males, have represented a lower percentage of college professors and administrators in the United States. The tendency for males to outnumber females in the professoriate and college administration has existed since United States higher education institutions formed in the early 1800s and still persists today. Fluctuations in women’s participation rate have been influenced by the economy’s history and society’s expectations of females. Observation of the employment trends for females offers an interesting look at the evolving role of women in the United States workforce, in general, and in the university setting, in particular.

Assessment Of A Professional Development Program On Adult Learning Theory, Melinda Malik
Assessment Of A Professional Development Program On Adult Learning Theory, Melinda Malik
Higher Education Student Work
Librarians at colleges and universities invested in graduate education must understand and incorporate adult learning theories in their reference and instruction interactions with graduate students to more effectively support the students’ learning. After participating in a professional development program about adult learning theory, librarians in this study reported that, in many ways, they already employed teaching and learning strategies grounded in one or more adult learning theories. They also indicated gaining a greater awareness of student development, enabling them to more successfully tailor their interactions.
Exploring Transition Through The Senior Year Experience, Devon B. Corbett
Exploring Transition Through The Senior Year Experience, Devon B. Corbett
Higher Education Student Work
Senior year is a busy time for most college students as they are preparing for their upcoming transition into adulthood. They are constantly answering the question “What are you doing after graduation?” This results in many college seniors pulling away from their community in order to focus strictly on their major field of study and less on their upcoming transition (Henscheid, 2008). Senior Year Experience programs are a way colleges can provide intentional programming to support college students throughout this transition into adulthood. The purpose of this study was to explore existing Senior Year Experience programs at other institutions with …
The International Curriculum: Current Trends And Emerging Needs, Jesse Jones Richter
The International Curriculum: Current Trends And Emerging Needs, Jesse Jones Richter
Academic Leadership Journal in Student Research
This paper examines the current state of tertiary level international curricula and provides groundwork for future research aimed at ongoing needs. Recognized is the premise that existing international curricular programs require maintenance. Burn (1995) called for curriculum reform in international departments two decades ago with the rationale that effective programming will consider both the near and distant future contexts of the business world. Devine (1993) provided some evidence of progress in the same era, but it is uncertain whether or not this was a sustained or isolated event. Additionally, there tends to be a mix in thought about what exactly …
A Website Of Agriculturally Related Activities For Elementary Grade Levels, Bailey M. Kirby
A Website Of Agriculturally Related Activities For Elementary Grade Levels, Bailey M. Kirby
Agricultural Education and Communication
The purpose of this project is to develop a website containing agriculturally-related activities designed for the elementary classroom, including kindergarten to fifth grade. This website was created in order to bring agriculture into the elementary classroom and introduce the topic to students at an earlier age because the subject is currently only taught at the high school level. Two activities were created for each grade level and fit into the current curriculums for those grade levels. The website was designed in a way that teachers will be able to continually submit activities to be added to the website at any …

“Build A School, Rebuild A City” An Economic Examination Of The Re-Structured Education System In New Orleans, 10 Years After Hurricane Katrina, Brianna Lazarchik
Senior Honors Projects
The city could have died. But it didn’t. Though the damage to the city of New Orleans in 2005 was devastating in ways that shocked the nation ten years ago, its culture and people are alive and thriving today. The depth of passion in New Orleans motivated and inspired individuals to move back to the city quickly and restore its glory. However, such rapid restoration is not without vast socioeconomic challenges. Education is a vital component of any thriving social system, and the education system in New Orleans has rebuilt itself in a unique way: largely through charter schools. This …

Suitability Of Commercial Certification Assessments For Film And Video Editing Courses, Bobby L Chastain

A study on the microstructure development of as-cast Cu-Mn alloys based around the congruent minimum at 34.6 wt % Mn and 873 °C was performed. Initially, this was to evaluate the alloy as an alternative to wide freezing range Pb and Sn bronzes that are plagued with porosity. The shallow minimum and associated narrow freezing ranges around the congruent point result in a completely cellular (non-dendritic) solidification morphology for a composition range ~3 wt % Mn about the congruent composition (C c). The degree of cellular solidification was found to depend on the mold material. Increased mold conductivity lead …
The Processing Of Formulaic Language On Elicited Imitation Tasks By Second Language Speakers, Yan Xun
The Processing Of Formulaic Language On Elicited Imitation Tasks By Second Language Speakers, Yan Xun
Open Access Dissertations
The present study investigated the processing of formulaic language, in an effort to examine how the use of formulaic language may or may not contribute to second language (L2) fluency in speaking performance. To examine the effect of formulaic language on L2 fluency, this study utilized elicited imitation (EI) tasks designed to measure general English language proficiency in order to compare repetition of individual sentences containing formulaic sequences (FS) to repetition of sentences that do not. In addition to the presence of FS, the length of stimuli sentences was manipulated and compared to a second independent variable. Responses to EI …

Counseling Concepts and Applications for Student Affairs Professionals (CNS 577)
A crucial element of the college experience is an exposure to new and different ways of thinking, which can lead students to question and redefine their identity. This video pamphlet provides new college students with a guide to exploring their values and identities during their time in higher education. This project focuses on religious identity, sexual orientation, and racial identity. There is a discussion of how Baxter Magolda's theory of Self-Authorship (Baxter Magolda & King, 2004), Chickering's Vectors of Identity Development (Chickering & Reisser, 1993), and Cass's Identity Model (Cass, 1979) apply to students' exploration of the aforementioned identities. Current …
