Sms Education In Accredited Undergraduate Collegiate Aviation Programs, Jonathan Velazquez, Nicole Bier Apr 2015

Sms Education In Accredited Undergraduate Collegiate Aviation Programs, Jonathan Velazquez, Nicole Bier

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

Safety is a critical part of aviation. Current practices demonstrate that agencies such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are encouraging Safety Management Systems (SMS) for many aviation components, to include airports, air carriers, and air traffic control (Kirsch, 2011). The FAA claims that SMS would also be valuable to collegiate aviation (Adjekum, 2014). With safety management growing in aviation, the purpose of this research was to determine whether or not SMS is being taught in programs accredited by the Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI) at the undergraduate collegiate aviation level. The total …

Reducing Health Disparities Through The 2015 Mcat: A Bold Goal Requiring On-Going Assessment, Aliya G. Feroe, Stephen F. Loebs Apr 2015

Reducing Health Disparities Through The 2015 Mcat: A Bold Goal Requiring On-Going Assessment, Aliya G. Feroe, Stephen F. Loebs

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

There is broad consensus that reduction in health care disparities is an important and multi-faceted challenge. One possible approach, among many others, starts with the attraction of women and men to the field of medicine who have a broad based education and who can demonstrate cultural understanding and sensitivity. In this context, the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) has been revised, effective in 2015, to include many additional questions concerning the psychological, social, and behavioral sciences. There are important assumptions fueling the revised Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and these will need to be tested. These assumptions range from influencing …

Impact Of Social And Cultural Factors On Teenage Pregnancy, Devi Akella, Melissa Jordan Apr 2015

Impact Of Social And Cultural Factors On Teenage Pregnancy, Devi Akella, Melissa Jordan

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

United States has the highest level of teenage pregnancy amongst the industrialized nations. Further, the level of teenage pregnancy is highest amongst the minority population. This research study examines the reasons behind high rates of early childbirth amongst African American teenagers. This study uses Bandura’s (1977) Social Learning Theory to deconstruct the factors, which influence and manipulate the overall behavior of the teenagers and initiates them to choose early motherhood over education and career. To ensure better quality of empirical data, the authors collaborated with the pregnant teenagers and a local non-profit community agency using a phenomenological analysis.

The impact of student organizations on the development of core competencies will be assessed using a survey that was designed around the core competencies outlined …

Identification Of Sluggish Cognitive Tempo By Teachers, Rachel Meisinger Apr 2015

Identification Of Sluggish Cognitive Tempo By Teachers, Rachel Meisinger

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

Children with Sluggish Cognitive Tempo (SCT) are characterized by a hypoactive, sluggish behavior pattern that does not fully fit the conceptualization of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) as was previously believed. Interest in this topic has surged recently, perhaps due to the fact that many researchers now view SCT as a construct that exists outside of ADHD (Barkley, 2014). SCT is associated with unique etiology, impairment, and comorbidities. Unlike ADHD, SCT represents a more passive form of inattention that may not disrupt the classroom. Thus, SCT may go unnoticed despite the fact that it is related to many academic and social …

Adolescents And Sexting: The Various Consequences And Strategies For Schools To Respond, Scotti Hagensick Apr 2015

Adolescents And Sexting: The Various Consequences And Strategies For Schools To Respond, Scotti Hagensick

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

Cell phone usage is at an all-time high among teenagers (Lenhart, 2009). As more adolescents utilize cellular devices to communicate, behaviors such as “sexting” have dramatically increased. Known as the sharing of sexually explicit photos, messages, or sexual content, students often report the motivation to sext focuses on gaining popularity or status with the opposite gender (Vanden Abeele, Campbell, Eggermont, & Roe, 2014). Unfortunately, for many teens, sexting often results in serious consequences including potentially registering as a sex offender and/or facing child pornography charges. In many cases, individual states are not clear on sexting and its legality for minors, …

Mood-Dependent Memory In English/Spanish Bilinguals, Alix Mclaughlin Apr 2015

Mood-Dependent Memory In English/Spanish Bilinguals, Alix Mclaughlin

Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research

Past research examining the effects of emotion on memory has documented that individuals find material more memorable when the emotional valence of the information is consistent with their mood state. While these mood-congruency effects have been applied to different contexts, one situation that has not been investigated is the effects of language on mood-congruency in bilinguals. This study explored mood-congruency effects in English and Spanish bilinguals by inducing a happy or sad mood and examining between-language and within-language memory for positive, neutral, or negative information. I investigated whether mood effects are consistent across languages or if the switch from one …

Mobile devices are increasingly being used by undergraduate students to access online information in the problem-based learning (PBL) process, initially in the self-directed phase, and more recently within face-to-face tutorials. This qualitative study across three undergraduate health professional programs used semi-structured interviews to investigate facilitators’ and students’ perceptions of mobile device usage in PBL tutorials. Transcribed interviews were analyzed thematically, drawing on the principles of grounded theory. Implications for future practice were identified. Students perceived that mobile devices are useful and convenient for instant access to various sources of information, for note taking, and for visually sharing their research and …

Social Constructivism And Case-Writing For An Integrated Curriculum, Alison F. Doubleday, Blase Brown, Philip A. Patston, Pamela Jurgens-Toepke, Meaghan Driscoll Strotman, Anne Koerber, Colin Haley, Charlotte Briggs, G. William Knight

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Case-writing within an integrated, systems-based health professions education curriculum presents many unique challenges. Specifically, case-writing in this context must consider integration of multidisciplinary learning objectives and synthesis of biomedical and clinical sciences. Establishing an effective process for content integration and determining who should be involved in the case-writing process can be a daunting task and this specific context requires a new model for effective casewriting. This paper provides a model for the cycle of case development, implementation, evaluation and modification in an integrated, systems-based health professions curriculum. We highlight how this collaborative case-writing model parallels the social constructivist approach promoted …

Cla+ Spring 2015 Uno Institutional Report, Uno Office Of Institutional Effectiveness

Student Learning

CLA+ has two primary uses. The first use—helping institutions estimate their contributions to the development of students’ higher-order thinking skills—is achieved through growth estimates, as well as overall evidence of students’ competency in critical-thinking and written communication. The second use highlights these skills for individual students; CLA+ results provide a valuable tool for potential employers and graduate schools to ascertain the depth of a student's critical-thinking and written-communication skills. With CLA+ Career Connect, those results become accessible and actionable. CLA+ Career Connect gives students a leg up in today’s competitive job market, enabling them to: post electronic badges verifying their …
