Effectively Advising Students Transitioning Majors, Layna Holk Apr 2025

Effectively Advising Students Transitioning Majors, Layna Holk

Higher Education Student Work

Students often feel unprepared for the academic demands of their chosen majors and can experience a lack of sufficient support from advisory practices, in turn feeling overwhelmed in their academic journey (Cody, 2024). Guided by extrinsic and intrinsic motivations alongside their personal orientations, major changes can affect a student’s retention to a school or the higher education institution as a whole (Soria & Stebleton, 2013; Gillis & Ryberg, 2021). To address this challenge, I developed a training program for faculty advisors in Effectively Advising Students Transitioning (EAST) majors. In doing so, I will train faculty to appropriately navigate and effectively …

Learning From Indigenous Knowledge And Research, Rob Morrison Apr 2025

Learning From Indigenous Knowledge And Research, Rob Morrison

Faculty Publications

The goal of this sabbatical research is to learn more about non-Western ways of knowing and learning (epistemologies) and to become a more effective culturally responsive teacher. I investigated how Indigenous Knowledge and research practices can enrich current definitions and practices of Information Literacy and integrate them into the research process. Information Literacy is part of a larger and more complex research process that involves connecting researchers’ questions and purpose with literature reviews and the resulting new knowledge.

I am continuing my research journey that started with my dissertation work on Culturally Relevant Information Literacy and Critical Information Literacy (CIL). …

Does Ai Help Or Harm? Why And How Ai Use Influences Workplace Outcomes And Employee Well-Being, Haille Trimboli, Reka Lassu Apr 2025

Does Ai Help Or Harm? Why And How Ai Use Influences Workplace Outcomes And Employee Well-Being, Haille Trimboli, Reka Lassu

Education Division Scholarship

Although the recent surge in excitement surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) might suggest it is a new development, AI has been applied in organizations for over forty years (Fanti et al., 2022; Markelius et al., 2024). Indeed, the term "artificial intelligence" itself emerged in the 1950s during a research project at Dartmouth College, where it was used to describe "machines able to simulate human intelligence" (Haenlein & Kaplan, 2019, p. 3). Most recently, in 2022, the landscape of AI use for laypeople greatly changed when OpenAI introduced ChatGPT, a generative AI tool, to the public; ChatGPT is an advanced AI language …

Exploring Student Perceptions Of Faculty Messages: The Moderating Role Of Internationalized Status And Gender, Geoffrey Luurs, Ismail Karabas, Brittany Wood

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

Email is a tool used often for developing rapport between students and teachers. A professor’s email mistakes may affect the attributions students make about the professor’s competence and professionalism. This study used an experimental, between-subjects design to analyze the impact of professors’ typographical mistakes during initial email interactions and the moderating role of instructor demographics in those perceptions. The final sample consisted of 426 participants (64.6% female, 75.8% Caucasian) across eight universities representing five regions of the United States. The results of this study showed instructor’s email mistakes do lead to negative perceptions. Furthermore, it showed a professor’s internationalized status …

Enhancing Faculty Preparedness To Teach Students With Learning Disabilities: A Community College Insight, Mayda Gonzalez Apr 2025

Enhancing Faculty Preparedness To Teach Students With Learning Disabilities: A Community College Insight, Mayda Gonzalez

Instructional Leadership Abstracts

Conclusion

As more students with learning disabilities enroll in college, faculty preparedness and the support institutions provide have become increasingly important. Despite some progress, a graduation gap still exists, highlighting the need for meaningful change. This study emphasizes that welltrained faculty are essential for creating inclusive classrooms. Educators can establish environments where all students can thrive by utilizing Universal Design for Learning (UDL), adaptable teaching methods, and fostering positive attitudes.

To help close this gap, institutions must invest in ongoing, research-based professional development. Mandatory training will equip faculty with the tools to support neurodiverse students effectively. By implementing these changes, …

Supporting Students With Foster Care History, Melanie J. Roberts Apr 2025

Supporting Students With Foster Care History, Melanie J. Roberts

Sabbatical Projects

Studies nationwide document that youth leave the foster system with a 3% chance of earning a college degree during their lifetime. These youth receive grants and services to help them pursue higher education, yet many have difficulty completing a degree or certificate. Recently colleges have created support initiatives aimed at transitional foster youth. My proposal is to provide a smooth transition from application to graduation for transitional foster care students who attend JCCC, engage them early, assist with the development of academic/career goals, and help put together a plan for success that includes academic advising, career development, goal setting, and …

A Comparative Study Of Future Time Perception And Motivation Between General Education Development (Ged) Students And Traditional Four-Year High School Students, Jared D. Brown Apr 2025

A Comparative Study Of Future Time Perception And Motivation Between General Education Development (Ged) Students And Traditional Four-Year High School Students, Jared D. Brown

Doctor of Education (EdD)

Students, especially those in general education development (GED) programs, are at a higher disadvantage when it comes to postsecondary success and readiness than traditional high school students. Despite being a small percentage of the population, GED students have the same motivation and optimism as other students and should be given the tools and skills necessary to be successful. Two surveys, the Adolescent Time Inventory (ATI; C. D. Mello et al., 2013) and the Global Motivation Scale-28 (GMS-28; Guay et al., 2003a) were used in this study to compare student motivation and time perception between traditional diploma seekers and GED seekers …

Baccalaureate Nursing Admissions And Academic Predictors Of Timely Program Completion, Catherine A. Kacalek

Doctor of Education (EdD)

The purpose of this study was to examine academic and demographic variables that predict timely completion of a bachelor of science in nursing program. Timely completion of a nursing curriculum affects current students, future students, health care organizations, and the general public. The purpose of this quantitative, retrospective study was to identify evidence-based academic admission criteria that would help select pre-nursing students mostly likely to complete the nursing curriculum on time, without failures. The variables of age, gender, ethnicity, and transfer student status were also analyzed to determine their impact on timely completion. The study utilized logistic regression and receiver …

A Phenomenological Study To Understand How Military Identity In Women Veterans, Enrolled As Community College Or University Students, Impacts Their College Experience After Leaving The Military Service, Jessica M. Bradley

Doctor of Education (EdD)

Women veterans represent the fastest-growing demographic among military veterans and are increasingly pursuing higher education after their service. However, their experiences as student veterans remain underrepresented in academic research. This phenomenological study investigates how military identity influences the college experiences of women veterans enrolled in community colleges and universities in Oregon. Through in-depth interviews with women veteran students, the research explores the complex layers of identity influenced by military service, gender, and higher education.

Key findings reveal several themes, including resilience and adaptability during the transition from military to civilian life, the intricate connection between military identity and personal and …

An Exploration Of Changes In Sixth Grade Students’ Conceptual Understanding Of Ratios And Proportions With A Number Talk Intervention, Kelsey Pearce-Snow Apr 2025

An Exploration Of Changes In Sixth Grade Students’ Conceptual Understanding Of Ratios And Proportions With A Number Talk Intervention, Kelsey Pearce-Snow

Doctor of Education (EdD)

The purpose of this study is to examine the changes that occurred in secondary students’ conceptual understanding of ratios and proportions after participating in number talks in their sixth-grade mathematics classroom. Proportional reasoning is a critical mathematical concept (e.g.., Beckmann & Izsák, 2015; Izzatin et al., 2021), yet many students struggle to understand the multiplicative relationships that are found within quantities (Lamon, 2007; Lobato et al., 2010). Number talks are an instructional routine that supports students in their development of underlying mathematical relationships through discourse with their peers (e.g., Gertenschlager & Strayer, 2019; Parker & Humphreys, 2018; Sun et al., …

Exploring Factors Of Trauma-Related Preparation And Trauma-Related Agency Among School Counselors, Amanda Rumsey, Kathryn Higdon, Sierra Swisher, Jacob Zimmerman

Publications

School counselors support students who have experienced trauma in schools worldwide. Increased awareness of the gravity of childhood trauma (CT) and relationships between exposure to trauma and personal, social, and academic development have advanced the need for schools to provide trauma-informed care. School counselors play a critical role in providing trauma-informed care in the school environment, as they are trained mental health professionals whose roles include supporting all students’ personal, social, and academic development. This study explores the relationship between school counselors’ professional and personal backgrounds and exposure to trauma and their trauma-related agency, which is identified in this study …
