With tuition increasing at a faster rate than inflation, many college students depend on financial aid to access education. The largest form of federal aid is the Pell Grant, which subsidizes over 30 billion a year worth of tuition for eligible students. While the ED is not required by Congress to measure success outcomes for Pell recipients, quantitative research has produced mixed results. Researchers have explored what causes Pell-eligible students to fail or persist, but the reasons can be varied and intersectional. However, little research exists on the student perspectives of financial aid, apart from their financial literacy or their …

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-specific condition typically diagnosed after 20 weeks of gestation in women with no prior history of hypertension. Characterized by high blood pressure, proteinuria, thrombocytopenia, increased liver enzymes, and affecting the arteries carrying blood to the placenta, preeclampsia affects the health of both the mother and the fetus. Preeclampsia is disproportionately prevalent in certain populations, specifically among Black women, with various factors contributing to the higher susceptibility including socioeconomic status, education, and health distrust. Endocrine disorder Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is an imbalance of reproductive hormones in women, primarily treated with medications such as hormonal birth control and metformin. However, long-term use of medications can have adverse effects as it masks the symptoms of PCOS rather than treat it. Women of childbearing age who are diagnosed with PCOS often are diagnosed with infertility. Fatigue without diagnosed anemia is prevalent in menstruating women, with iron deficiency being a potential contributor. While iron supplementation is a standard intervention, dietary sources of iron may offer a sustainable alternative. This study aims to assess the impact of an iron-rich diet on fatigue levels in menstruating women. A 12-week randomized controlled trial (RCT) will be conducted, assigning participants to either an iron-rich diet group or a control group following their usual diet without specific iron recommendations. Fatigue will be measured using the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) at baseline, six weeks, and twelve weeks, alongside iron status biomarkers, including …

Despite being widely used as sugar alternatives, artificial sweeteners (AS), especially aspartame, remains debated regarding their potential effects on mental health. While some studies suggest aspartame has no discernible impact on stress, anxiety, or cognitive performance, others indicate that it may affect serotonin pathways and contribute to mood disorders. Given these contradictory findings, further research is needed to clarify aspartame’s effect on mood regulation. This study aims to evaluate the impact of aspartame on stress-related biomarkers and mood modulation, focusing on individuals with anxiety. High teacher turnover, especially within the first five years, negatively impacts student learning, school culture, and district budgets. Mentorship, administrative support, and professional development can help reduce attrition among beginning K–12 teachers in the United States. The project aims to identify practical, evidence-based strategies that support teacher retention during these critical early years. This dissertation is a qualitative exploration of the experiences of Latina daughters of immigrant parents during the critical transition from high school to community college. Focusing on the role that Latino parents have in affecting their daughters' educational motivation and persistence, the research employed semi-structured, in-depth interviews with Generation 1.5 (immigrated to the U.S. as children or youth) or second-generation (born in the U.S. to immigrant parents) Latina daughters. The interviews allowed for a comprehensive examination of the complex factors affecting these young women's educational journeys. These experiences did not occur in isolation. Since the COVID-19 pandemic ended, U.S. postsecondary students' smartphone usage has increased. Smartphone usage has become more embedded into campuses and affects the lives of students pursuing postsecondary education. This study sought to explore whether three specific measures of smartphone usage can predict students' academic performance, self-efficacy, and sense of belonging. These measures included daily average screen time, daily average social screen time, and problematic smartphone usage.

In this study, I explored how Latter-day Saint higher education professors experienced and facilitated dialogic interactions in online religion courses. Seven instructors who taught synchronous and asynchronous virtual courses at Brigham Young University participated in semi-structured interviews focused on their pedagogical approaches, relational practices, and perceptions of student engagement. Guided by hermeneutic phenomenology and drawing on principles of dialogic pedagogy, I explored how religion instructors cultivated dialogue in virtual classrooms grounded in doctrinal instruction. The findings revealed how professors created a relational presence, navigated institutional constraints, and fostered deep learning and spiritual growth environments. This dissertation provides a comprehensive exploration of the phenomenon of belonging specifically tailored to students with historically minoritized identities (HMIs) within the Washington University Program in Occupational Therapy (WUOT). Employing qualitative methodologies including scoping reviews, theoretical conceptualizations, focus groups, individual interviews, surveys, and participant video diaries, the study delves into the multifaceted nature of belonging within the context of occupational therapy (OT) education. This paper examines one of three central diagnostic tools of the Concerns Based Adoption Model, the Stages of Concern Questionnaire (SoCQ). The SoCQ was developed with a focus on K12 education. It has been used widely since developed in 1973, in early childhood, higher education, medical, business, community, and military settings. The SoCQ captures data about beliefs and intentions of individuals regarding their engagement with a new program or practice.

Qualifying for merit is a competitive and contentious process in higher education. Many merit structures are based upon traditional faculty evaluation systems which do not reflect the changing nature of higher education and thus, yield inequitable results. This article presents the case of a large department at a mid-size regional university that revised the system for merit and faculty evaluation to recognize undergraduate contributions and more equitably score the scholarship, service, and teaching of faculty members in the department. By exploring these stories’ transformation on modern platforms, we are able to see the impact of digital media on traditional storytelling. In Navajo mythology, Skinwalkers are individuals, typically male, who practice the Witchery Way, gaining the ability to transform into animals to cause harm and disrupt the natural order.
