Wise Minds Wanted: Calling For Intellectual Virtue In A Post-Truth Era, Lisa Devall-Martin
Wise Minds Wanted: Calling For Intellectual Virtue In A Post-Truth Era, Lisa Devall-Martin
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
In Healthy Christian Minds, Elmer Thiessen offers a thought-provoking exploration of intellectual virtues and vices, challenging readers to cultivate wisdom, humility, and principled openness in an age of division. While not written specifically for educators, this book holds deep relevance for those shaping minds inside and outside the classroom. Thiessen argues that true intellectual excellence is not just about acquiring knowledge but about developing character; an idea that resonates with those committed to fostering critical thinking and integrity in their students. Drawing from theology and philosophy, he examines the dangers of closed-mindedness and arrogance while encouraging a love of truth …
Scenes From A Sabbatical: Narratives Of School Leadership, Albert Boerema
Scenes From A Sabbatical: Narratives Of School Leadership, Albert Boerema
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
School leadership is often described in terms of vision, strategy, and efficiency. However, the lived experiences of school leaders reveal a far more complex reality—one shaped by relationships, ethical dilemmas, and the daily challenges of guiding a school community. This paper presents insights from a sabbatical study in which the author observed and interviewed leaders at five schools—one public and four faith-based.Four aspects of leadership are illustrated in this essay: the emotionally charged moments, the tensions that arise between competing visions, the fragility of educational institutions, and the role of hospitality in leadership. These narratives illustrate how school leaders navigate conflict, …
Christ-Centered Reasoning: A Platform And Framework For Integrating Christian Faith Into Higher Education., Jf Jf
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
The integration of Christian faith in higher education can be challenging, as the parameters and scope of integration are not always clear. Notably, the term ‘integration’ has been overused and/or thrown around without distinction within the Christian Liberal Arts halls of learning. Generally, no principles are provided for integration in terms of curriculum, pedagogy, or learning; hence, a clear articulation is required regarding what integration entails with respect to curricula, learning, and pedagogy. There is also an urgent need to theorize integration practically and pragmatically within higher education, particularly in relation to inquiry methodologies and discipline-specific specializations. One way to …
The Experience Of Being A Christian Public School Teacher, Carrie Birmingham
The Experience Of Being A Christian Public School Teacher, Carrie Birmingham
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
This research asks, “What is the experience of being a Christian teacher in a public school?” Analysis of semistructured interviews with 16 Christian public school teachers revealed that, while this experience is highly variable and contextualized, teachers experienced four common concerns, making visible how teachers’ religious identity shapes their purpose for teaching, their interactions with supports and oppositions, their values for themselves and for their students, and their perspectives on Christian witness and teaching in their public school settings.
Exploring The Relationship Between Classroom Management And Relational Leadership, Genie Kim, Nancy Ross
Exploring The Relationship Between Classroom Management And Relational Leadership, Genie Kim, Nancy Ross
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
Our research examines teachers’ capacity to cultivate a learning environment conducive to students’ academic and social-emotional flourishing, specifically as it pertains to love and its intersection with classroom management. Utilizing Ross’ (2023) Relational Leadership Scale (RLS), coupled with an adapted version of Tschannen-Moran’s Teacher Efficacy Scale, we measured loving leadership, from the perspective of Teacher Candidates, as they observed their Associate/Host teachers’ behaviors/dispositions within the context of teaching students. The results of our study revealed a moderate positive correlation between classroom management and the overall RLS scores. It was found that teachers who engage in loving leadership behaviors were perceived …
Teaching As A Pedagogy For Christian Faith Development: A Faith-Based Framework For Pre-Service Teachers’ Reflective Practice, Sarah Fischer
Teaching As A Pedagogy For Christian Faith Development: A Faith-Based Framework For Pre-Service Teachers’ Reflective Practice, Sarah Fischer
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
To prepare pre-service teachers to be high-quality educators, Christian teacher educators have the responsibility of integrating professional frameworks of teaching effectiveness and reflective practice into their programs. However, the most commonly used frameworks in the United States have inherent limitations when the specific aims of a Christian teacher education program are considered, such as their isolated construction of teacher identity, their prioritization of behavioral changes over attitudinal changes, and their conceptualization of spatial and relational boundaries. Although these tools promote professional growth, they do not adequately support pre-service teachers’ integration of professional and faith development. The goal of this essay …
Women's Learning For Community Peacebuilding, Robin Neustater
Women's Learning For Community Peacebuilding, Robin Neustater
Peace and Conflict Studies
Around the world, every day, women work on building peace in their communities. Through various roles, paid and unpaid, women’s community care work is significant to the lives of individuals, families, communities, and the women themselves. Understandings of peace are varied, and often nuanced to the context and experience of who is defining peace. How women define peace will inform how they think about peacebuilding. Women engage in learning about peace and for their peacebuilding work, through nonformal and formal programs, and through experience and role models. Their learning to do peace is vital to getting things done. This article …

Transforming Heritage Narratives: Harnessing The Power Of Four Truth Inquiry To Reclaim Women’S History And Reinvent Climate Communication At Interpretive Sites, Pamela Blair-Bruce
Dissertations
Abstract
Heritage sites, particularly national parks, serve as powerful spaces for storytelling that shape public understanding of American history, cultures, ecological processes, and diverse landscapes. However, their narratives often omit critical aspects of women’s history and climate change, perpetuating historical erasure and selective storytelling. This qualitative research study applies the Four-Truth Framework developed by the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission to examine how heritage interpretation can improve the recognition of women’s contributions and strengthen climate communication at heritage sites. To explore approaches to women’s history interpretation, the study employed semi-structured, focus group interviews with educators, historians, and interpreters across …

The Case For Visual Art In Overcoming The Double Empathy Problem, Katelyn Milea Rose Nilson
Theses and Dissertations
A person's cognitive environment--made up of their thoughts, experiences, and tendencies--can affect how they empathize with others. Those with significantly different cognitive environments, such as autistic and neurotypical individuals, may have a difficult time empathizing with one another. This study aimed to facilitate empathy between the two groups by aligning their cognitive environments through discussion about visual art. Five autistic neurotypical dyads completed three discussion sessions where they observed and journaled about a piece of art, discussed their thoughts with each other, and filled out a questionnaire about their experience. All participants also completed a post-study interview. Data from questionnaires, …

The Acute Impact Of Game-Based Physical Education On The Mood States Of Middle School Students, John Nemeth
Doctorate in Kinesiology
Mental health disorders represent a massive global health burden, with close to one billion people currently affected. Access to treatment and medical care remains low, especially among children. Increased physical activity (PA) is a widely recognized and accessible method for improving mental health, with substantial evidence supporting its benefits. Physical education (PE) is a structured, school-based environment that promotes PA and increased movement, but research examining its impact on mood is limited. This study examined mood changes in middle school students following PE participation in two game-based activities: handball (team sports) and badminton (partner games). A quasi-experimental design was used …
An Instrumental Case Study Of Low-Income, African-American Parents’ Perceptions And Experiences Of Parent-Teacher Relationships In Midwestern, Pk-8 U.S. Public Schools, Rochelle Rolle
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
Positive parent-teacher relationships are vital for student success in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, particularly among low-income, African-American parents and guardians. Research suggests respect, trust, and open communication as key factors for cultivating positive parent-relationships; however, race and social class have influenced the development of African-American parents and guardians’ relationships with their children’s teachers. This instrumental case study investigated how six low- income, African-American parents and guardians in Midwestern PK-8 public schools perceive their relationships with their children’s teachers. Using a qualitative method approach, the study was guided by the Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler Model of the Parental Involvement Process and Critical …

Perceptions Of Spirituality And Of God: A Psychological Qualitative Study, Christopher E. Peck, Timothy B. Smith, Jamila Mastny
Faculty Publications
The majority of people living in the U.S. report that spirituality is an important part of their life that is influential to their well-being. However, individuals vary widely in how they conceptualize spirituality, which often stems from and overlaps with their conceptualizations of God or so-called “God image”. Examination of people’s experiences of spirituality and conceptualization of God can enable psychologists to improve their understanding of individuals’ core personal experiences. This study evaluates both spirituality and God image, as well as the relationship between these two constructs, using qualitative hermeneutic analysis of interviews with 63 adults (51% women, 49% men, …

Race, Reflection And Resistance: An Autoethnographic Journey In Social Studies Curriculum Development, Jesse Nicholas Hendryx-Dobson
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this qualitative, self- study, autoethnography is to explore my instructional practices, strategies and decision making as I navigate my attempts to build a more anti-racist, racial justice social studies curriculum in a predominantly white school environment. Critical Race Theory as well as racial literacy provided me with a conceptual framework, but also with the language I need to articulate the research problem and my findings. Three research questions guided how I collected and analyzed my data: 1) How do I plan social studies lessons that address the topic of race/racism? 2) How can I use social studies …

The Effects Of In-Depth Exposure To The Lived Experience Of Aphasia On Student Learning, Brianne Roos, Gretchen Szabo, Tami Brancamp, Elizabeth Hoover, Chaleece Sandberg, Tom W. Sather
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
Although individuals with aphasia are commonly treated by speech-language pathologists, many clinicians entering the field feel under-prepared to work with this population. Undergraduate and graduate students need appropriate training that emphasizes person-centered care mapped onto evidence-based practice, combining high-quality research evidence, clinical expertise, and client preferences. Incorporating lived experience into curricula helps shape students’ knowledge and understanding of aphasia from the perspective of patients and carepartners. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods, this study examined the impact of in-depth exposure to the lived experience of aphasia on students across six US universities. Students read the book Identity Theft: Rediscovering Ourselves …

An Interdisciplinary Early Intervention Learning Community For Undergraduate Students, Ciera M. Lorio, Hannah Rudkin, Christina Rauwolf, Luminita Hartle
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
There is currently a nationwide shortage of early intervention (EI) providers in the United States, and the number of families in need of EI services is much greater than the available service providers (CEC, 2019; Barton et al., 2012). One way to increase the number of qualified service providers is to offer better and earlier preservice training in EI at the university level. To meet this need, we designed and implemented the Early Intervention Learning Community (EILC), an extracurricular experience that focused on introducing students to EI and interprofessional practice. The primary components of the EILC included self-guided learning modules, …
