Prevalence Of Typical Images In High School Geometry Textbooks, Megan N. Cannon Jun 2017

Prevalence Of Typical Images In High School Geometry Textbooks, Megan N. Cannon

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Visualization in mathematics can be discussed in many ways; it is a broad term that references physical visualization objects as well as the process in which we picture images and manipulate them in our minds. Research suggests that visualization can be a powerful tool in mathematics for intuitive understanding, providing and/or supporting proof and reasoning, and assisting in comprehension. The literature also reveals some difficulties related to the use of visualization, particularly how illustrations can mislead students if they are not comfortable seeing concepts represented in varied ways. However, despite the extensive research on the benefits and challenges of visualization …

A Qualitative Content Analysis Of Early Algebra Education Ios Apps For Primary Children, Lissa S. Ledbetter

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Educational software applications (apps) on multi-touch, mobile devices provide a promising space to help learners work toward long-term educational goals, like learning with understanding (Bransford, Brown, & Cocking, 2000). Such goals are particularly relevant in supporting a learner’s efforts to become more mathematically literate. Yet, a number of current apps do not appear to be living up to this potential. As such, this study drew upon the theoretical framework of Learning Science and the conceptual framework of TPACK theory (Mishra & Koehler, 2006) to define curricular characteristics that ideally support primary children’s potential to learn early algebra concepts with understanding, …

Teacher Transformation Through Story And Experience: A Narrative Study Of Peer Observation, Critical Inquiry, Collaboration, And Trust, Eryn Elizabeth Berg

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

Professional development has long been out of the hands of those for whom it matters most—the teachers. The history of professional development from the founding of common schools to the bloom of accountability with the enactment of national policy, has long left the teacher out of the discussion. In addition, what teachers need to experience to undergo change for their classrooms has also been left out of the conversation. This dissertation was an exploration of the history of professional development as well as why it matters that teachers have meaningful and transformational professional development that enables them to change. From …

Creating A Crisis Communication Plan For Small Or Mid-Sized Community Colleges With Monroe County Community College As The Model, Verkennes Joe

Master of Arts in Media and Communication Plan II Graduate Projects

Community colleges need to develop crisis communication plans to protect themselves from the ramifications of crises. While colleges and universities have been diligent about ensuring that they have crisis management plans in place, the same cannot be said for crisis communication plans. The effects of crises on the reputations, operations, and finances of community colleges can include losses of enrollment, decreases in donations, reductions in government funding, accreditation issues, and the severing of key partnerships. This is because crises can negatively impact organizational reputations, which are widely recognized as valuable, intangible assets. Having a solid crisis communication plan can help …

The Role Of Integrated Curriculum In The 21st Century School, Kimberly Mohr, Robert W. Welker

Dissertations

In schools across the country, there appears to be an increasing focus on 21st Century Skills development. While there may be some variance among specific definitions of these skills by national groups and individual schools, review of the literature has identified eight common features among widely accepted frameworks: creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, collaboration, digital literacy, social and cultural skills, and self-regulation. It is proposed that integrated curriculum should be considered an ideal method for the teaching and learning of 21st Century Skills. While neither the collection of skills designated as “21st century” in and of themselves, nor …

A Comparison Of Teaching College Algebra Courses In The Morning Versus The Evening, Andreas Lazari Jun 2017

A Comparison Of Teaching College Algebra Courses In The Morning Versus The Evening, Andreas Lazari

Georgia Journal of Science

College algebra is a course that many students have difficulty with. It is a course that is usually taken to satisfy the requirement in the core area of the degree program. Universities across the country are in constant search for new ways to deliver college algebra and in the process improve the success rate as well as the retention rate.
