This study focuses on researching the use of metacognitive strategies on secondary students reading comprehension scores. Metacognitive strategies are strategies that help students become more aware of their own thought process and learning. The metacognitive strategies used for this study were self-monitoring, self-regulation, self-questioning as well as the use of vocabulary knowledge. The study takes place in an intermountain west charter high school Reading for Pleasure course for students ninth through twelfth grade. All students within the Reading for Pleasure course received specialized reading instruction over a six-week term from the researcher. All students received approximately 360 minuets of specialized …

Using Behavioral Skills Training To Teach School Staff To Implement Functional Communication Training, Megan Johnston Dec 2025

Using Behavioral Skills Training To Teach School Staff To Implement Functional Communication Training, Megan Johnston

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

This project looked at how to train school staff in effective strategies for supporting students with disabilities who engage in challenging behaviors like hitting, self-injury, or crying. We taught three school staff members to use a behavioral intervention called Functional Communication Training (FCT), which helps students learn more appropriate ways to communicate their needs, while also ensuring they do not gain access to reinforcement for challenging behaviors. Staff were trained using Behavioral Skills Training (BST), a step-by-step approach that includes instructions, modeling, practice, and feedback. After the training, the school staff were able to use these strategies correctly, and the …

Improvisation Of Mands Using Augmentative And Alternative Communication, Lauren Decker Dec 2025

Improvisation Of Mands Using Augmentative And Alternative Communication, Lauren Decker

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Research shows that young children who use pictures to communicate can use colors, shapes, and functions of items to request when the specific picture of the item is not available. This problem-solving skill is called improvisation, which this study taught to a preschool aged participant with communication delays. A four-year-old preschool student was able to make these requests with basic colors, shapes, and three function pictures. They also were able to make these requests for items not taught to them in different settings. This suggests that improvisation training can be successfully implemented with preschool aged children with communication delays and …

Discourses Embedded In The Adams V. School Board Of St. Johns County Decision And The Rights Of Transgender Students In Schools, Douglas Larson Dec 2025

Discourses Embedded In The Adams V. School Board Of St. Johns County Decision And The Rights Of Transgender Students In Schools, Douglas Larson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

This study was critical analysis of the language of the court case Adams v. School Board of St. Johns County (2022). This case was brough by a student against the School District challenging a policy that prevented him, a transgender boy, from using the boys’ restroom. The analysis was not intended to determine the merits of the case or the correctness of the legal reasoning. Rather, the analysis was performed on the text of the case—the language used by the judges—to learn about the beliefs, attitudes, and values of the judges.

The reason this analysis is important is because judges …

An Evaluation Of Virtual Reality Modeling To Improve Accuracy Of Physical Education Skills In Teenage Students With Disabilities, Kristen Lee Dec 2025

An Evaluation Of Virtual Reality Modeling To Improve Accuracy Of Physical Education Skills In Teenage Students With Disabilities, Kristen Lee

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Virtual Reality (VR) technology is becoming more common in schools, especially for teaching and training. In this study, researchers explored how VR can help teenagers with disabilities improve their physical education skills, specifically push-ups, lunges, and jumping jacks. The participants all showed an increase in their skills and reached a high level of accuracy on every skill. The results showed that adding feedback was also necessary for some participants. Additionally, participants enjoyed using the VR equipment and showed high levels of happiness throughout the study. These findings suggested that using VR technology can be an effective way to support teenagers …

Novice Instructors Can Make Satisfying Video Lectures By Using Familiar Techniques: A Repeated-Measures Test Of Video Lecture Formats And Learner Satisfaction Theory, Sonny Rosenthal, Stuart Braiman, Dawn Z. Y. Poh Dec 2025

Novice Instructors Can Make Satisfying Video Lectures By Using Familiar Techniques: A Repeated-Measures Test Of Video Lecture Formats And Learner Satisfaction Theory, Sonny Rosenthal, Stuart Braiman, Dawn Z. Y. Poh

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Research has shown that composite video lectures lead to higher learner satisfaction than other video lecture formats, but this finding has not been replicated among novice instructors. In this study, six PhD students created two video lectures on different topics. One used the picture-in-picture (PiP) format, while the other used the video composite format. Undergraduate student participants (N = 185) watched both video lectures by a single instructor and rated them on several variables. Contradicting prior research, the participants rated the composite video as having lower content quality (Cohen’s d = -0.35) and instructor-content interaction (Cohen’s d = -0.17) than …

Home Visitors Perceived Barriers To Practicing Self-Care In Personal And Professional Settings, Lexie Yancey Dec 2025

Home Visitors Perceived Barriers To Practicing Self-Care In Personal And Professional Settings, Lexie Yancey

Masters Theses

Home visiting has the potential to support families in increasing their parenting skills, reducing incidents of child maltreatment, increasing school readiness, and improving financial sustainability (HRSA, 2023; Peacock et al., 2013). Retention of home visitors in programming is crucial to retaining families in home visiting (Damashek et al., 2020; Fifolt et al., 2017; Holm-Hansen et al., 2017; Ramakrishnan et al., 2022). While many home visitors struggle with burnout, research has found that self-care strategies are effective for social work students and are even used widely by home visitors (Begic et al., 2019; Siebert, 2008). This nested mixed-methods study examines answers …

Unlocking College Potential: The Role Of Student Expectations And Non-Cognitive Skills In College Success, Gema Zamarro, Malachi Nichols, Julie Trivitt, Rian Djita Dec 2025

Unlocking College Potential: The Role Of Student Expectations And Non-Cognitive Skills In College Success, Gema Zamarro, Malachi Nichols, Julie Trivitt, Rian Djita

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

Attending college is a significant human capital investment, but only about 60 % of those who start college will have a completed degree six years later. This makes identifying the skills associated with college success an important policy concern. We surveyed over 1100 entering college freshmen, majoring in business and engineering at a public university in the US, and combined this information with administrative data to create a comprehensive data set that, in addition to the usual academic performance data, cognitive ability measures, and demographics, also included measures of non-cognitive skills, personality traits, student expectations about college grades and performance …

A Molecular Mechanism Of Epithelial To Mesenchymal Transition (Emt): An Evidence Based Lesson Applying Molecular Biology Through The Lens Of Cancer, Sophie Hasson, Melissa Rowland-Goldsmith Dec 2025

A Molecular Mechanism Of Epithelial To Mesenchymal Transition (Emt): An Evidence Based Lesson Applying Molecular Biology Through The Lens Of Cancer, Sophie Hasson, Melissa Rowland-Goldsmith

Open Educational Resources

This lesson aims to strengthen students’ critical thinking and molecular biology data analysis skills as well as their understanding of concepts related to the hallmark of cancer: tissue invasion and metastasis. Students begin by learning about the invasion of cancer cells, Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT), and an important protein involved in EMT: E-cadherin. They then apply molecular biology knowledge to analyze data from multiple papers to infer the relationship between Snail and E-cadherin in different types of cancers. Next, they continue to interpret data from many papers to determine that a repressor transcription factor is present during EMT in cancer cells …

Beautiful Articulation In Confirming Ali's Commendation Of The Companions In Nahj Al-Balagha: An Inductive-Analytical Study, Ghazwa Suliman Awad Alanazi Dec 2025

Beautiful Articulation In Confirming Ali's Commendation Of The Companions In Nahj Al-Balagha: An Inductive-Analytical Study, Ghazwa Suliman Awad Alanazi

University of Tabuk Journal for Humanities and Social Sciences

This study investigates Ali ibn Abi Talib's (may Allah be pleased with him) perspective on the Companions, particularly the Muhajirun and Ansar, as presented in Nahj al-Balagha, aiming to clarify his relationship with them and address a central point of Sunni-Shi'a divergence. Employing inductive and analytical approaches, it scrutinizes narrations attributed to Ali. Key findings reveal: (1) Nahj al-Balagha, compiled by al-Sharif al-Radi, holds prominence among Shi'a, yet Sunnis question its authenticity due to the lack of verifiable chains of transmission; (2) Ali consistently praised the Companions as exemplars of devotion and asceticism; (3) He specifically extolled the Muhajirun for …
