How Do Emirati University Students Develop Their Academic Biliteracy? A Mixed-Method Study, Eman Kamel Rababa

Dissertations

Framed by Hornberger’s continua of biliteracy model, this study investigated the developmental dynamics of academic biliteracy among Emirati university students. The research employed a sequential mixed-methods design, conducted across three public universities in the UAE. In the initial qualitative phase, interview data were collected from 30 students. Informed by these findings and the extant literature, a quantitative survey was then developed and administered to a sample of 299 students from various disciplines. The qualitative data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis, while the quantitative data were examined using advanced statistical analyses, including structural equation modeling. Three primary themes emerged from …

Black And Latine Youth Thinking About Punitive And Restorative Approaches In Relation To Race/Ethnicity, Gabriel M. Velez, Amelia Kasper

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Restorative practices (RPs) are a growing approach to mitigate racial/ethnic disparities in school disciplinary systems. This qualitative study explores the lived experiences of Black and/or Latine students, examining how they perceive and interpret disciplinary approaches in their schools. Using focus groups across seven high schools (N = 93 participants), we explored how students made meaning of the potential of RP. Overall, participants expressed nuanced opinions regarding the purposes and effectiveness of both punitive and restorative approaches. Specifically, participants demonstrated mixed thinking about punitive and restorative responses, connected the efficacy of responses to context, and stressed the importance of incorporating …

Do Sports Develop Leadership? The Impact Of College Varsity Sports On Leadership Capacity And Self-Efficacy, Benjamin Correia-Harker, Lindsey M. Clark, Jacob J. Capin

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Introduction: Effective leadership in sports is associated with better team functioning, physical and psychosocial wellbeing, and reduced incidence of severe injuries. In spite of widespread anecdotal support, few studies have empirically evaluated leadership development in athletes. The purpose of this study was to investigate socially responsible leadership capacity and self-efficacy in college varsity athletes and determine the impact of competitive sports participation on leadership capacity and self-efficacy. We hypothesized that college varsity athletes would (1) exhibit greater leadership capacity and self-efficacy than nonathletes and (2) demonstrate greater growth in leadership capacity and self-efficacy than nonathletes.

Methods: The Multi-Institutional Study of …

A Practice-Based Framework For Teaching Geography At The Secondary Level, Kyle F. Tredinnick Nov 2025

A Practice-Based Framework For Teaching Geography At The Secondary Level, Kyle F. Tredinnick

Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Further work is necessary to carry out the goals set forth in geography education initiatives like the Geography for Life: National Geography Standards and Road Map for 21st Century Geography Education Project. Methods to communicate the focus of geographic lessons at the secondary level can help guide teachers who are otherwise unaware of the ability for geography to answer questions and develop solutions to problems. Research and development of effective instructional tools to teach geography is needed. This research aims to provide a practice-based model for lesson-development in geography, as supported in academic literature. Input from higher-education faculty …

Composing A Kaleidoscope: A Scholarly Personal Narrative Of Academia In A Time Of Digital Overload, Suzanne Porath Oct 2025

Composing A Kaleidoscope: A Scholarly Personal Narrative Of Academia In A Time Of Digital Overload, Suzanne Porath

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

s Scholarly Personal Narrative (SPN) explores the experience of fractured academic identity amid illness, remote teaching, and digital saturation. Anchored in the methodology of SPN as described by Nash (2004) this narrative integrates personal storytelling with critical reflection and theoretical engagement. Drawing on Rushkoff’s concept of digiphrenia, Makowka’s fractal identity, and Gergen’s absent presence, the paper examines how academic life in the digital age increasingly demands simultaneous performances of self across disjointed timelines and virtual spaces. Through vignettes of presenting at concurrent conferences, teaching from chemotherapy bays, and supporting a dissertation defense in unlikely places, this piece reflects on the …

Educators Perspectives Of Systematic English Language Development : A Qualitative Explanatory Study, Yvette Beavers, Nichole Bell

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Multilingual English Learner (MLL) students are the fastest-growing student population in the U.S. and are often academically behind their native English-speaking peers. One factor in the achievement gap is MLL students' ability to gain English proficiency and inadequate teacher professional development. An explanatory study was conducted to explain the perspectives of teachers, and principals and assistant principals on Systematic English language development (SELD). The study collected data from five English Language Development (ELD) teachers and three principals and two assistant principals who supervised the ELD program at their school sites. The participants engaged in one-to-one interviews with ten semi-structured interview …

Femtoring Book Club: Turning Pages, Uplifting Latinas, Heather A. Hathaway Miranda Oct 2025

Femtoring Book Club: Turning Pages, Uplifting Latinas, Heather A. Hathaway Miranda

Gatherings

Amid the social isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, I initiated Learn, Laugh, Lead, and Self-Love, a virtual femtoring program designed for Latina women aged 19 to 25. This weekly space incorporated interactive elements such as icebreakers, creative responses to visual art, and intentional community-building practices to cultivate trust and solidarity. After one year, the virtual gatherings transitioned into a monthly femtoring book club for women of color, launching with The Four Agreements and centering themes of gratitude, affirmation, and the reflective practice of sharing tunas and espinas© (joys and challenges). Drawing on my prior participation and support of an in-person …

Guerrilleras: Speaking Truths And Strategizing Futures, Estela López Oct 2025

Guerrilleras: Speaking Truths And Strategizing Futures, Estela López

Gatherings

Women of color in higher education face a landscape that can be difficult to navigate for any number of reasons. For those who succeed, our successes and failures are hard fought and even harder won. This personal reflection considers my experiences participating in The State of Women of Color in New York Higher Education, and my goals for sharing about these aspects from my own career. I offer a goal that guided me through what I discussed at the symposium and saw interwoven throughout the day: women of color guerrilleras who come together in a coalition of warrior sisters to …

Background

Research is a core component of health profession training programs, but few efficient training resources exist that provide introductory research training that is brief, freely accessible, and supportive of learners with varying levels of research experience.

Methods

We set out to create the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) Research Certificate program to support Graduate Medical Education (GME) residents and other learners. We initially explored existing curricula used to instruct medical and doctor of pharmacy students in order to identify foundational research topics to include in our introductory research program. We were guided by stakeholders to create a curriculum …

Narratives Of Vietnamese Teachers: Exploring Existential Givens Of Freedom, Meaning, And Isolation, Huy D. Nguyen Oct 2025

Narratives Of Vietnamese Teachers: Exploring Existential Givens Of Freedom, Meaning, And Isolation, Huy D. Nguyen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Drawing on Yalom’s framework of existential givens, this study explores how Vietnamese teachers experience existential freedom, existential isolation, and life meaningfulness. The notion of experience serves as the conceptual and interpretive foundation through which participants articulate these existential dimensions. Three participants were selected, and data were collected from online journal entries, vignette responses, and semi-structured interviews. Methodologically, it adopts intuitive inquiry as both conceptual lens and analytic process, integrating multiple modes of knowing and embodied understanding to explore how teachers imagine, experience, and interpret their work. To deepen interpretation, narrative structuring was incorporated to reveal the emotional and relational textures …

A Guided Ungrading Example For Independent Research Projects In An Upper-Division Ecosystem Ecology Stem Course, Christine S. O'Connell Oct 2025

A Guided Ungrading Example For Independent Research Projects In An Upper-Division Ecosystem Ecology Stem Course, Christine S. O'Connell

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Ungrading is a pedagogical approach that, in some iterations, emphasizes formative feedback and student self-assessment over traditional point-based grading. While increasingly popular in the humanities and social sciences, ungrading remains uncommon in STEM courses, particularly those that are content-intensive. This article presents a structured example of ungrading implemented in an upper-division ecosystem ecology course through a 7-week independent research project. Students used public or previously collected ecological data to investigate a scientific question, culminating in a short-format, manuscript-style research paper and a 10 min oral presentation. The project was scaffolded with multiple checkpoints, including structured reflections, peer review, and instructor …

All Works

The Scales for Rating the Behavioral Characteristics of Superior Students (SRBCSS; Renzulli et al., 2010) are notable for incorporating teachers’ informed evaluations in identifying gifted students. Teachers’ close interactions with students enable them to make meaningful judgments, and the SRBCSS provides a structured method to guide and strengthen their nominations. The aim of the present study was to gain insight into the psychometric properties of the Greek version of the first four Scales for Rating the Behavioral Characteristics of Superior Students (SRBCSS), which assess various dimensions of giftedness. One hundred and forty-five (145) Greek primary and secondary education school (elementary …

First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience

Looking back at my first semester, I’ve made some truly fond memories. Starting off with an amazing group of people in the program and going on our retreat helped me find a community I could rely on. This community has remained by my side, even during challenging times, and for that, I’ll always be grateful. Whether it was tackling escape rooms or being part of First Year Seminar, the first-gen community has shown itself to be incredibly strong and tightly connected.

The First Generation, Alberto Martinez

First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience

My poem basically describes how I feel as a first-generation student is. Many of us including myself, felt as if we were alone, not knowing if we have someone by our side, but through our experience, we do share a common ground. First to go is a place where we all can share that and is a place where we do not have to be alone but have the support of those around us who can relate to how we feel.

While appreciating the roots and strength of my family and striving to live out my dreams and be the first of many to come.

First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience

Through the poem, I wanted to explain my journey as a First Gen student who was struggling to balance school and work. I also wanted to represent the many students who are facing the same fight everyday. My hope was to show encouragement and motivation to keep going.Making sure to remind yourself to live each day knowing you're doing your best.

First Doubts, Carla Bueno

First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience

As first-gen students, we often struggle with the identity and responsibility of being the firsts to navigate through the unknown. With this, doubts of our ability to succeed come naturally and these can be consuming. My advice is to not be afraid of using resources available and asking questions as these are the first steps into finding our way in institutions not built for us.

First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience

Beneath the shade of the trees, I reflect on the weight of my family’s dreams and the determination it takes to pursue a degree. The clear blue skies and open spaces remind me that possibilities are just as boundless, even when the roads feel steep. Here, amidst the peace and beauty I find the strength to strive as a First-Generation Latina student.

First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience

The purpose of my reflection is to demonstrate to other individuals, especially first-generation students, my experience with the college process, along with the obstacles I faced, the doubts, and everything that comes along with being the first person in your family to attend a higher education institution in the United States. In my reflection, I describe the process that I experienced, from the very beginning of high school to the start of my college journey. To finalize my reflection, I leave the reader with three important tips I have learned along the journey: being resilient, not being afraid of new …

First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience

I share a dream with my family. The dream of graduating from college, getting a good job, and living a better life. A life where we won’t be financially tied down. I am now attending Loyola Marymount University and pursuing a degree in Animation. I’m the first in my family to pursue a degree in Film & Television, and even though I can’t help the thoughts that I should be doing something more “impactful,” I know that it’s my passion and that it is the combined efforts of my family and those who have helped me, that led me here. …

First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience

My "trailblazin" collage is just a collage of me and my brother as we grew up. It was just us two for the majority of our childhood and we were always pushed to make the most of our education here in the US. Growing up I always relied on him, and he made sure to be there to guide me and help me learn from his mistakes. Fast forward to now and we're both at LMU together, and the same way he trailblazed the path for me, I hope to do for my two younger siblings. It symbolizes what has …
