Determination Of The Ecological Water Quality In The Orienco Stream Using Benthic Macroinvertebrates In The Northern Ecuadorian Amazon, Federico Sinche, Manuel Cabrera, Lenin Vaca, Edin Segura, Pablo Carrera
School of Environmental Sustainability: Faculty Publications and Other Works
In recent years, pollution of watercourses in nearby protected ecosystems has increased due to urbanization. Standard physiochemical methods and probes are one way to monitor watercourses for quality. However, they often do not provide the full ecological status of the body of water. In this work, we set out to assess the ecological water quality of an urban stream by using benthic macroinvertebrates as bioindicators. We conducted the work on the Orienco stream in Lago Agrio in the province of Sucumbíos in the Northern Ecuadorian Amazon (NEA). The stream has become a sink of raw domestic sanitary wastewater from rural …

City Of Bellingham Parks And Recreation Environmental Restoration Intern, Zach Griffin
College of the Environment Internship Reports
Getting the opportunity to be the Environmental Restoration intern with the City of Bellingham Parks Volunteer Program was an enriching invaluable experience for me, both personally and professionally. Despite having to unfortunately leave the program sooner than I anticipated, due to issues with financial aid dispersal and their inequitable credit requirements, I still walked away with a plethora of achievements. And although this internship doesn’t have any direct connections to the urban planning profession, there are still multiple takeaways from this position that I strongly believe are transferable skills to any future planner. I was able to positively interact with …

The invasive European Green Crab (Carcinus maenas) have spread from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, becoming a matter of concern in waterbodies throughout the Salish Sea. The possible establishment and growth of this invasive species poses risks to the native species, that thousands of people rely on for their livelihood and for the seafood industry in the Pacific Northwest. I completed and internship with the Northwest Straits Commission (NWSC) working in an emergency response trapping effort to trap invasive European Green Crabs (EGC) in Drayton Harbor, WA to help protect and conserve the native species from their devastating …

The Nexus Of Climate Change, Biodiversity, And Food Security: A Brazil Case Study, Andrew M. Berger
Dissertations and Theses
What is referred to as climate change today is the rapid warming of the climate, largely from human actions, and the effects that come with that warming. One study published by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in 2021 argues that, “human-induced emissions of greenhouse gases have caused increases in global average temperatures, changes in precipitation timing and intensity, rising sea levels, and many other changes.” A Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) study found that when looking at the number of countries exposed to climate extremes in five year periods from 2000 to 2020, the number of countries “exposed …

Master's Project: Belonging To Place: Redefining Wilderness And Renewing Human-Land Relationships In The Champlain-Adirondack Biosphere Region, Lillian Reid Howell
Rubenstein School Masters Project Publications
This project examines how wilderness has historically defined human relationships to land and explores how the wilderness concept might evolve to bring humans into relationship with place in the Champlain-Adirondack Biosphere Region (CABR). The research findings suggest that wilderness has perpetuated a separation between nature and culture that has greatly influenced our collective cultural psyche in the West, and in order to move forward, these elements must be reintegrated into a single holistic system. A review of Indigenous perspectives on wilderness and human-land relationships offers an alternative to the Western wilderness model, which is followed by a discussion of these …
Posthuman Queer Ecosexuality: Shakespeare And Earthly Consummation, 2022 Saint John's University, Jamaica New York
Posthuman Queer Ecosexuality: Shakespeare And Earthly Consummation, Lisa Robinson
Theses and Dissertations
“Posthuman Queer Ecosexuality” explores the culminating productivity of a queer landscape fertilized by dead bodies. Tragedy as a genre provides a higher queer possibility simply because it does not contend with picture perfect happy endings. By seeing an inherent connection between queerness and death, the paired couples of the specific Shakespearean tragedies explored in this project, King Lear (1605), Othello (1604), and Antony and Cleopatra (1607), fertilize the respective landscapes within their plots. These main six characters are queered by forced connections to nature due to their gender, race, or function as a ruling body. Once they are placed in …
Evaluating Dam Relicensing And River Herring Habitat Restoration From A Broad, Multi-Ecosystem Perspective, 2022 Bowdoin College
Evaluating Dam Relicensing And River Herring Habitat Restoration From A Broad, Multi-Ecosystem Perspective, Matthew L. Thomas
Honors Projects
This study investigates the potential benefits of using a broad, multi-ecosystem analysis in the licensing and relicensing of hydropower facilities. Specifically, it considers the impact of river herring restoration on coastal food webs and cod and other groundfish populations in the Gulf of Maine. The past two decades of research on fisheries management, ecosystem connectivity, and the connection between river herring and groundfish in the Gulf of Maine have resulted in a better understanding of the ways in which human activities, such as dam building, influence ecological processes. The paper analyzes two case studies of six Maine dams currently engaged …

Preventative Weed Management Strategies In Arkansas Tomato Production, 2022 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville
Preventative Weed Management Strategies In Arkansas Tomato Production, Gracie E. Morrison, Matthew Bertucci
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
Cost-effective weed suppression is an important consideration for tomato growers. Growers often choose methods which minimize hand labor, as hand weeding can be prohibitively expensive. This project determined economic viability of high tunnel tomatoes treated with several methods of weed control, both organic and chemical. These methods included: 2-week hand weeding, 1-week hand weeding, preemergent herbicide application (plots sprayed with herbicide prior to weed emergence), straw mulch (plots bedded with straw), landscape fabric (plots covered in fabric), and untreated weedy control plots. These six treatments were applied to randomized blocks in a high tunnel. Weeding, planting, and harvesting were all …

Consumers shop at multiple retailers for different needs, and it is understood that many choose a retailer for an experience and others will shop at another retailer for better savings. In a time where E-commerce is at an all-time high, retailers need to consider how they compare against online retailers in the apparel sector. In this study, three retailers were compared against one another since they are all swimwear competitors. As these retailers adjust to store and production shortages, it is important to understand how the quality of clothing will keep sales consistent. Consumers are likely to keep shopping at …

Climate change is soon becoming an unescapable challenge for many countries, Egypt included. Severe weather events are becoming more and more frequent and developing countries are expected to be more vulnerable to their effects. Tourism is considered one of the most vulnerable sectors affected by climate change, not only due to risks to marine life coastal communities, but also because changes in temperatures are expected to affect tourists preferred destinations. This is especially challenging for Egypt given that Tourism contributes up to 15% of GDP, is one of the countries’ main sources of foreign currency, and employs more than 10% …
