Hsi Fact Sheet: The Impact Of Animal Agriculture On The Environment And Climate Change In Brazil, Humane Society International
HSI FACT SHEETS
The intensification of farm animal production in industrialized agricultural systems, or factory farms, compromises animal welfare and degrades the environment. Animal agriculture inefficiently consumes natural resources, contributes to deforestation, and produces immense quantities of animal waste, threatening water and air quality and contributing to climate change. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations estimated in 2006 that animal agriculture was responsible for 18% of global, anthropogenic, or human-induced, greenhouse gas emissions and was ―by far the single largest anthropogenic user of land.
A Quantile Estimation Approach To Identify Income And Age Variation In The Value Of Statistical Life, 2010 Claremont McKenna College
A Quantile Estimation Approach To Identify Income And Age Variation In The Value Of Statistical Life, Mary F. Evans, Georg Schaur
CMC Faculty Publications and Research
In theory, heterogeneity in individual characteristics translates into variation in the marginal willingness to pay for a mortality risk reduction. Two dimensions of heterogeneity, with respect to income and age, have recently received attention due to their policy relevance. We propose a quantile regression approach to simultaneously explore these two sources of heterogeneity and their interactions within the context of the hedonic wage model, the most common revealed preference approach for obtaining value of statistical life estimates. We illustrate the approach using data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). We find that the impact of age on the wage–risk …

Durian Peel As Biosorbent For Removal Of Cadmium Ions From Aqueous Solution, 2010 Chulalongkorn University
Durian Peel As Biosorbent For Removal Of Cadmium Ions From Aqueous Solution, Wanna Saikaew, Pairat Kaewsarn
Applied Environmental Research
The ability of durian peel to remove Cd(II) ions from aqueous solution by biosorption was investigated. The sorption capacities at different solution pH, agitation speed, temperatures, initial cadmium ions concentrations and contact time were evaluated on a batch scale basis. At pH 5 and agitation speed 150 rpm, the cadmium ions removal reached at a maximum value. Increases in cadmium capacity with increasing temperature indicated endothermic nature of the biosorption process. The equilibrium was better described by the Langmuir isotherm model, with a maximum biosorption capacity of 18.55 mg g-1. The biosorption was relatively quick about 15 min to reach …

Trends In Temperature And Rainfall Extreme Changes In Bangkok Metropolitan Area, Sangchan Limjirakan, Atsamon Limsakul, Thavivongse Sriburi
Applied Environmental Research
Trends in temperature and rainfall extremes in the Bangkok Metropolitan area were analyzed on the basis of 3 high-quality series of daily data. A set of core climate extreme indices recommended by the WMOCCL/ CLIVAR Expert Team on Climate Change Detection, Monitoring and Indices (ETCCDMI) that measures many aspects of a changing climate including changes in intensity, frequency and duration of temperature and rainfall events was computed. Analysis of these indices provided clear evidence that different aspects of temperature and rainfall extremes in the Bangkok Metropolis exhibited significant changes during 1965- 2006. The region has been clearly warming over the …

Trends in daily rainfall extreme along Thailand's coastal zones were examined, based on 28 high-quality series of daily rainfall data observed at the stations along the Andaman Sea Coast (ASC), the Gulf of Thailand's western coast (GoTw) and the Gulf of Thailand's eastern coast (GoTe). A set of core climate extreme indices recommended by the WMO-CCL/CLIVAR Expert Team on Climate Change Detection, Monitoring and Indices (ETCCDMI) that measures different aspects of rainfall extreme events such as wetness and dryness conditions, frequency and intensity rainfall events was calculated. Analysis of these indices revealed notable changes in rainfall extreme events along Thailand's …
Air Pollutant Emissions From The Burning Of Incense, Mosquito Coils, And Candles In A Small Experimental Chamber, 2010 Chulalongkorn University
Air Pollutant Emissions From The Burning Of Incense, Mosquito Coils, And Candles In A Small Experimental Chamber, Maneerat Ongwandee, Wilas Pipithakul
Applied Environmental Research
Combustion of incense, candles, and mosquito coils produces a variety of air pollutants, which may cause adverse health effects. This study was to characterize emissions of particulate matter (PM2.5) and carbon monoxide (CO) from the burning process of three selected types of emitters: incense, candles, and mosquito coils. The experiments were conducted in an aluminum foil-lined wall chamber with a dimension of 1x1x1 m3. Emission rates and emission factors of the test emitters were obtained from fitting time-dependent concentrations of the measured pollutants to a single-compartment mass balance model. The emission rates and emission factors of incense combustion were: PM2.5 …

Extreme weather events affect vulnerable urban areas adversely, with substantial damage, disruption of normal economic and social activities and services and loss of human life and can also alter the medium or long-term development trajectory of the cities. Thus, disaster management is an important context for integrating adaptation into decision-making for the cities at risk. The APNfunded research project in Mumbai, Bangkok and Manila has been undertaken with the primary objective of identifying and measuring the short to medium-term impacts and responses to extreme weather events and their policy implications for long-term adaptation capacity and development planning for the cities. …
Extractive Reserves, 2010 University of Richmond
Extractive Reserves, David S. Salisbury
Geography and the Environment Faculty Publications
Extractive reserves are territories dedicated to environmental protection and the sustainable use of nature resources by traditional populations. Reserves follow a traditional land tenure model based on individual family and communal property rights to common areas, such as forest trails used to extract or harvest nontimber forest products. Although the extractive reserve concept originates in the tropical forests of the Brazilian Amazon, reserves have also been created in aquatic, floodplain, and savanna landscapes throughout Brazil. There are now 50 extractive reserves covering more than 10 million hectares, an area larger than Portugal, and more continue to be created. Despite their …

Female Humpback Whale (Megaptera Novaeangliae) Reproductive Class And Male-Female Interactions During The Breeding Season, Meagan E. Jones
Antioch University Full-Text Dissertations & Theses
This study examined whether female reproductive class (i.e., presence or absence of a calf) in humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) affects female behavior and male-female interactions on the Hawaiian breeding grounds. From 2003-2008, 295 female-calf groups (with or without a male escort) and 256 female no-calf groups (with a male) were observed. Forty-one female no-calf groups were confirmed male-female pairs by genetic sexing or photo-identification. Focal follows of 36 male-female pairs and 50 female-calf groups (29 escorted and 21 unescorted female-calf groups) were analyzed for time budget and movement estimates. Relative fluke size (fluke photogrammetry, n=30) and sighting histories …
