Nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) are chromosomal segments in which ribosomal RNA is encoded. The AgNOR technique, which reveals these regions, has rarely been used in diagnosis and preceding the prognosis of pituitary adenoma. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation of hormonal profile with the AgNOR counts, and the correlation of recurrence with the AgNOR counts and to determine the concordance between the evaluations of two different observers. Increased mean airway pressure (Paw) predisposes to increased alveolar dead space volume and, hence, physiologic dead space volume (V{Dphys}. This is the result of overdistending alveoli, converting Zone 2 and Zone 3 units to Zone 1 units. Lung carbon dioxide elimination (LCO_2) is a reflection of pulmonary capillary blood flow. It is hypothesized that as Zone 1 units form or V{Dphys} increases, LCO_2 decreases proportionately and eventually PaCO_2 increases. We investigated whether rCBF values obtained with the SPECT technique are different in schizophrenics with predominantly positive or negative symptoms and assessed the biological underpinnings of psychotic phenomena, which has been done repeatedly in the past, with somewhat varied results. Twenty-nine schizophrenic patients were examined to investigate the relationship between regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and psychopathology according to SANS, SAPS and BPRS scores. Using the Tc-99m HMPAO SPECT method at rest, rCBF was assessed in 15 patients with predominantly positive (group I) and 14 with predominantly negative (group II) symptoms. This study was conducted in an endemic goitre area to determine thyroid profiles TSH, freeT4 (fT4), T4, fT3 and T3, as well as the degree of the severity of hypothyroidism and the prevalence of the disease. Tonbak is a small village in Kahramanmaraş. The iodine content of the water is < 1 mg/L. A randomly selected group of 121 subjects aged 16-55 were included in the study. The percentage of goitre was 71.1% upon physical examination. Subjects with primary hypothyroidism were 16.5%. To determine the effects of cigarette smoking on blood antioxidant status and lipid peroxidation, 16 healthy male current smokers (CS) and 16 healthy male non-smokers (NS) serving as controls were studied. CS were divided into two groups: short-term smokers (STS) 35.4 ± 5.8 years of age (mean±SD), and long-term smokers (LTS) 60.9 ± 4.9 years of age. Pineal-gland-derived melatonin (N- Acetyl 5-Methoxytryptamine), which is a known antioxidant hormone, is known to have inhibitory effects on cell growth and proliferation. Ethanol causes increases in lipid peroxidation, superoxide formation and collagen synthesis resulting in fibrosis in the liver due to alcohol intake. An amperometric biosensor based on a carbon paste electrode modified with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) is defined as a device for the quantitative and qualitative detection of oxidizable drugs. This paper demonstrates the advantages of using HRP as the biocatalyst in the in vitro detection of oxidizable drugs in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Amperometric analysis and batch experiments were carried out in acetate buffer (pH 4.8) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The formation of nitric oxide (NO), a free radical, increases in liver disease, where the L-arginine-nitric oxide (L- arg-NO) pathway is activated by the increased levels of cytokines and endotoxins. In this study, we investigated the relationship between the L-arg-NO pathway and chronic active hepatitis and cirrhosis, which are classified as chronic liver disease. We investigated the possible interaction of glibenclamide and metoprolol on the occurrence of life threatening arrhythmias during the acute phase of experimental myocardial infarction. Coronary artery ligation was performed in conscious rats and ECG was recorded for 15 min following ligation. Neither metoprolol (2 mg/kg i.p., 20 min before coronary artery ligation), nor glibenclamide (5 mg/kg i.p., 30 min before ligation) pretreatment increased significantly the survival rate during the acute phase of myocardial infarction (10 % and 22 %, respectively vs. 9 % in controls). Combination of glibenclamide with metoprolol, however, significantly improved the survival rate (62 %, P < 0.05). These results suggest that the combination of a cardioselective b-blocking agent with an ATP- dependent potassium channel inhibitor may result in an enhanced antiarrhythmic effect during the acute phase of myocardial infarction.

The aim of this experimental study was to determine the effects of growth hormone on hepatic regeneration after partial hepatectomy. Thirty pathogen free Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into three groups, each containing 10 rats. The animals were subjected to a sham operation in Group 1, and to left hepatic lobectomy in Groups 2 and 3. The animals in Groups 1 and 2 received saline solution (0.2 mg/kg/day), while growth hormone (Lilly Humotrope, Lilly France Usine de Fegersheim, France) (0.2 mg/kg/day) was given to the animals in Group 3 for seven days. In this study, effects of cholesterol and protective effects of vitamin E (vit E) and Selenium (Se) on the morphology of the liver in rats were observed. Cholesterol (Chol) supplemented diet, Chol + vit E, Chol + Se and Chol + vit E + Se were applied to the rats. Portal fibrosis with bile ductal proliferation and an increased inflammatory infiltration were seen in Chol group. The effects of the administration of a single dose of garlic on the aerobic performance of college endurance athletes were investigated in this study. Ten trained male athletes participated voluntarily in this study. A 900-mg dose of dried garlic powder or placebo was administered randomly in a double-blind cross-over fashion. Five hours after ingestion of the tablets, the subjects underwent an incremental treadmill running test according to the Bruce protocol until subjective exhaustion. Higher titers of autoantibodies have been reported in recent studies of depressed patients. In an attempt to investigate the presence of antiphospholipid autoantibodies in patients with depression, sera from both patients and healthy controls were tested for immunoglobulin G and M anticardiolipin and antiphosphatidylserine autoantibodies. We tested positive sera for antiphosphatidylserine (APSA) and anticardi- olipin autoantibody (ACA) in 10 dysthymic, 19 major depressive, and 20 healthy subjects. The level of possible microbial cross-contamination in an automatic dental radiograph processor was investigated. Pure cultures of Staphylococcus aureusATCC 6538 P, Escherichia coli ATCC 1103 and Candida utilis ATCC 18804 and a mixed culture of these three microorganisms were prepared. In the first five days of the week, 90 films contaminated with one of these pure cultures were developed. This was followed by the processing of 36 uncontaminated films that were developed in the last two days of the week. Polymeric foams seem to have potential for use in many research areas such as cell seeding and macromolecule or drug loading. Three factors were studied to evaluate the efficiency of foams as drug carrier and releasing agents. Effect of polymeric properties was examined by using two types of polymers (PHBV 7 and PHBV 22) differing only in their valerate (copolymer) content. The other factor studied was the effect of loading extent on release kinetics and rate. The results showed an unexpected inverse proportionality between drug loading and release rate.
