Is Eradication Of Helicobacter Pylori An Alternative Treatment For Rosacea?, Pinar Yüksel Başak, Buket Ci̇ci̇oğlu Aridoğan

Several reports have focused on either the increased prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection or lack of association in patients with rosacea. In this study, 19 patients with rosacea and 38 healthy controls were investigated for seropositivity to Helicobacter pylori by ELISA and the effects of eradication treatment on clinical improvement were monitored. Statistical analysis was performed using Student's t test, Mann-Whitney U test, Wilcoxon signed ranks test, McNemar's test, and chi-squared and correlation tests. No correlation was detected between the degree of severity of disease and Helicobacter pylori positivity. Our results suggest that Helicobacter pylori may be an aggravating factor, …

Recently tuberculosis has shown a speedy worldwide spread. The incidence of drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis is increasing in almost all industrialized and developing countries. The epidemiology of multiple drug resistance varies in different regions and countries. The aim of this study was to determine the activities of first-line (isoniazid, rifampin, ethambutol and streptomycin) and second-line (kanamycin, para-aminosalicylic acid, ethionamide and capreomycin) antituberculosis drugs on 100 various clinical isolates of M. tuberculosis. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the importance of the apoptotic activity of squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix and Bcl-2 expression. Materials and Methods: Twenty-seven women with cervical squamous cell carcinoma, admitted to our unit between 1996 and 1998, were reviewed. Patients were classified according to staging and grading systems. Bcl-2 protein material was investigated by immunohistochemistry (streptoavidin, biotine, alkaline phosphatase technique). Results: After immunohistochemical staining, 12 of the 27 cases stained positively (44%). There was a correlation between the grade and staining percentage. Many risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD) have been reported to date. Recently, it has been shown that elevations in homocysteine (Hcy) levels may contribute to the development of coronary heart diseases. In this study, our aim was to determine the relation of Hcy levels and other risk factors in CHD. Serum Hcy, lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)], C-reactive protein (CRP), fibrinogen, cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL and LDL levels were measured in 51 male patients, diagnosed with CHD with negative T elevations in electrocardiograms, and in 20 healthy males. In the present study involving patients with bone metastases arising from prostate cancer, we measured urinary deoxypyridinoline (DPD) as a marker of collagen breakdown activity, serum total and bone-specific alkaline phosphatase activities and serum prostate specific antigen (PSA). This study included 20 patients with benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) and 23 patients with carcinoma, 11 of had with bone metastases. DPD excretion in urine was significantly greater in prostate cancer patients with bone metastasis than in those with localised prostate cancer or BPH (p0.05). Forty-eight upper limbs were dissected in order to study the courses and relations of the brachial plexus nerves in the axilla. Connections between the musculocutaneous and median nerves were found in five arms. There was a suprascapular nerve arising from the union of C4 and C5 directly in one cadaver. A branch from the median nerve extending to the brachial artery was determined. In one of the cadavers the radial nerve arose only from the union of posterior divisions of the inferior and middle trunks.

B(a)P is a mutagenic, carcinogenic and teratogenic substance. Paclitaxel and doxorubicin are antineoplastic drugs widely used in cancer treatment. The purpose of this study is to observe the effects of doxorubicin and paclitaxel on p170 glycoprotein in rat liver and kidney tissue after administration of B(a)P. As is well known, p170 glycoprotein is an indicator of drug resistance. We hypothesized that a combination of these antineoplastic drugs would cause lower p170 levels and thus would have a stronger effect than single drug administration. In the study 64 male Sprague dawley rats were used. They were divided into 8 groups, and protective agents were applied at different doses for 8 weeks. The aim of the study was to establish apolipoprotein E genotype in the patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) who are inhabitants of the north-east of Turkey. The study involved 106 patients (70 male, 36 female; ages ranging from 37 to 69 years) who are local people and were angiocardiographically diagnosed for CHD. Anionic sites on bacterial envelopes of Streptococcus \beta-haemolyticus and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 P were investigated on materials fixed with Karnovsky fixative containing the cationic dyes ruthenium red (RR) or alcian blue (AB). Electron dense granules and short fibrils were found to be irregularly distributed around the cells on the glycocalyces of both genera. An electron dense stained reaction with RR or AB on the cell membrane and glycocalyx indicates the presence of rich anionic sites on these structures. Electron microscopic observations demonstrate that anionic sites in the glycocalyx are responsible for the adherence phenomenon during the formation of microcolonies. …

The microbiologic lid flora evaluations of 117 patients with anterior blepharitis were compared with those of 52 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. The sampled bacterial cultures were identified according to standard conventional techniques and fatty acid profiles by the Microbial Identification System (MIS). Chi-square and difference between two percentage Z tests were used for the statistical analyses. This prospective randomized clinical study was designed to assess and compare the effects of normothermic and hypothermic nonpulsative cardiopulmonary bypass in patients with mitral valve replacement. Forty patients undergoing elective mitral valve replacement were randomly divided into two groups according to the temperature of perfusion. Group N (15 patients) underwent normothermic cardiopulmonary perfusion and Group H (25 patients) underwent hypothermic cardiopulmonary perfusion. Carbonic anhydrase is the basic enzyme in inhalation function. Untill now no research had been done to determine whether CA is in the human erythrocyte plasma membrane or not. Carbonic anhydrase (CA) was purified from human erythrocyte plasma membrane and described in this study. For this purpose, the blood samples taken from young human test subjects were hemolyzed, then the membrane fraction was separated, and this fraction was repeatedly washed. QSAR analysis of some 5- or 6-methyl-2-substituted benzoxazoles/ benzimidazoles was studied for the antifungal activity against C. albicans using Hansch analysis. Prediction for the lead optimization in this QSAR analysis was described by the description of various hydrophobic, electronic, steric and structural parameters related to positions R_1, R_2, R_5, R_6, X, Y. The cross-validation method was also applied to the data set in order to prove the predictive power by using the BILIN statistical software. Histamine is a biogenic amine widely distributed in the central nervous system that acts in a neuroregulatory role in controlling the waking state. The aim of this study was to determine whether 120 h of REM sleep deprivation (REMSD) causes changes in histamine concentrations in rat brain stems and cerebral cortex areas that are involved in the homeostatic regulation of sleep.
