Infectious complications are major causes of morbidity and mortality following major hepatic resection. We investigated in rats the incidence and time course of bacterial translocation after partial hepatectomy during ischemia and reperfusion. Forty-eight male Wistar rats weighing 230 to 280 g were studied. Partial liver warm ischemia was performed for 15 min followed by reperfusion for 15 min. During a second 15 min of ischemia, 70% hepatectomy was performed. The animals were divided into six groups of eight animals each. In this study the non-peroxide antibacterial factors in Malaysian honey were isolated and identified. The phenolic components were extracted from two different local floral honeys and their effects on the growth of selected pathogens were examined. A solid-phase extraction procedure was applied for the first time to recover honey phenolics. Identification was carried out via high performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography analysis. Antibacterial activity was determined via the disc-diffusion and broth dilution assays. The phenolic fractions of gelam and coconut honeys showed potent antibacterial activities. Both honeys contain gallic, caffeic, and benzoic acids. However, gelam honey contains additional phenolic …

Our purpose was to investigate whether Helicobacter pylori (Hp) has a specific mucosal appearance. Eighty-eight (female / male: 53/35) patients included in the study underwent endoscopy to determine the macroscopic appearance of their gastric mucosa. Biopsies taken from the antrum, incisura angularis and corpus of each patient were stained with toluidine blue and examined for Hp under a light microscope. Thirty were Hp negative and 58 Hp positive. Thirty-six percent of the patients had normal mucosa, 21.59% had spotty erythema in the antrum, 31.81% had a mosaic pattern in the antrum and/or corpus and 10.23% had acute duodenal ulcer. We examined the effects of various concentrations of the bupivacaine commonly used for spinal anaesthesia on the reversibility of conduction block in isolated frog sciatic nerves measured by the extracellular recording technique. Seventy-two isolated nerves were divided into 3 groups (n = 24), each of which was bathed in a different bupivacaine solution in a range of concentrations (10, 20 or 30 mM for 20 min). Echinococcosis is an infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus and E. multilocularis. It manifests as cyst formations in various organs, affecting both humans and animals. The cysts may be unilocular (E. granulosus) or multilocular (E. multilocularis). Multilocular cysts have particular significance, for their macroscopic appearance is reminiscent of malignant tumors and their prognosis is poor. The purpose of this study is to describe our cases and to start a discussion on the current echinococcosis problem in İzmir, western Anatolia. This study was carried out to compare the effects of three forms of individualized education (verbal, written, and verbal-written) on asthma knowledge in asthmatic patients. For this purpose, a randomized double blind controlled study was conducted with 62 adults with asthma followed-up at the outpatient clinic of Chest Diseases and Tuberculosis of the Faculty of Medicine of Suleyman Demirel University. Patients were randomized to the verbal (n:20), written (n:20), and verbal-written (n:22) education groups. Knowledge of asthma was measured at the baseline and 2 months after education. The aim of the study was to investigate the bacteriological effects of different diets by Streptococcus mutans counts on 50 Swiss albino rats inoculated with Streptococcus mutans CCUG 6519 serotype c. A powdered form of standard basal diet meeting rats' nutritional needs was used in combination with diets containing different percentages of starch, sucrose and xylitol for 90 days. Homocysteine was found to be an independent risk factor for coronary artery disease in many epidemiological studies. The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between total homocysteine levels and premature coronary artery disease events. A case - control study was carried out in patients aged 35 to 50 years with angiographically shown coronary heart disease and in age and sex matched control subjects with normal coronary angiography. To investigate the effect of low dietary zinc intake and experimental diabetes (IDDM) on the zinc and carbohydrate metabolism, 8-week-old male wealing normal albino (Wistar) rats were fed diets containing either adequate (54mg/kg) or low zinc (1mg/kg) quantities for one week. Ten rats from each group (n=20) were then intraperitoneally injected with alloxan to induce diabetes. The rats were sacrificed after a further three weeks. The aim of this study was to determine the histological changes of the thoracic aorta in rats fed on alcohol for a period of 24 weeks. Twenty male Wistar rats were divided into two groups. The ethanol group (n=10) was fed on a modified liquid diet (MLD) containing 7.2% ethanol for 24 weeks. The control group (n=10) was fed on MLD without ethanol throughout the experiment. We showed that butter suppresses metabolic responses to endotoxin in Wistar rats. Responses included increases in plasma caeruloplasmin and liver zinc and protein concentrations, and decreases in plasma zinc and albumin concentration. However, butter lost its suppressive effect at dietary concentrations above 90g/kg diet. The present study examined whether this phenomenon was due to the total dietary cholesterol intake rather than the intrinsic fatty acid composition of butter. This study was carried out to determine whether certain clinical, laboratory, or radiological parameters predispose patients to develop FIRDA in acute situations. Charts of patients in whom FIRDA was detected on an EEG on hospital admission were reviewed. Demographic data, clinical history, physical findings, laboratory results and neuroimaging studies were recorded. Sixty-eight patients with a median age of 56 years were included. Chronic illness was present in 78%. Normal background activity was observed in only 17% of the cases. Epileptiform discharges were uncommon. AIM: We aimed to find the correlation between bilirubin levels measured spectrophotometrically and transcutaneously by an icterometer and investigate if the number of serum bilirubin measurements can be reduced by using an icterometer during phototherapy on a bilibed. METHODS: The study group consisted of 52 babies with total serum bilirubin values less than 18 mg/dl, who were treated by phototherapy at the bilibed in the Neonatology Unit of Marmara University Hospital. Surface and build-up region doses of 6, 15 and 25 MV photon beams were investigated for several clinical setup parameters. Evaluated setups included open fields, physical wedge (PW) fields, virtual wedge (VW) fields and blocked fields. The effects of field size, acrylic block tray, source-to-surface distance (SSD) and off-axis distance on surface dose were determined for each of these setups. Siemens Mevatron MD2 (6-15 MV) and Mevatron-KD2 (6-25 MV) linear accelerators were used to measure both the surface and build-up region doses. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of immunoscintigraphy with Tc-99m-labelled antigranulocyte antibody in combination with Tc-99m-methylene-diphosphonate (MDP) bone scanning in diabetic foot infection. The study group comprised 42 Type 2 diabetics with foot infection. Pre- and postprandial blood glucose level, HbA1c, urinary glucose, microalbuminuria, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, and bacteriological cultures were analyzed. Investigation of transcutaneous oxygen tension, vibration sensation, electromyo-graphy, and Doppler ankle/brachial systolic blood pressure index was carried out. The in vitro esterase activity of carbonic anhydrase on total esterase activity level was investigated. This effect was obtained by subtracting the value of net esterase from the value of total esterase in sera with normal (95.22 ± 8.87) and high glucose levels (208.58 ± 87.90). Total esterase activity, net esterase activity and esterase activity of carbonic anhydrase were 20.2 ± 1.9, 18.1 ± 1.8 and 2.1 ± 0.7 U/min/mL serum in sera with a normal glucose level, and 21.3 ± 2.8, 17.9 ± 2.9 and 3.4 ± 1.2 U/min/mL serum in sera with a high glucose level, respectively. The aim of the present prospective study was to investigate the influence of smoking on ultrasonographically determined thyroid gland volume and echo-texture in a large randomly selected group of 500 healthy subjects of both sexes from a non-iodine deficient area. An accurate ultrasonographic technique and the Brunn method were used to determine the thyroid volume of each volunteer. The examiners had no idea of the smoking habits of the volunteers.
