Calpainopathy, also known as limb-girdle muscular dystrophy recessive type 1, is a progressive muscle disorder that impacts the muscles around the hips and shoulders. The disease is caused by defects in the CAPN3 gene and can be inherited in both recessive and dominant forms. Although high muscle strength worsens the sense of force, it is unknown whether there is a relationship betweenthis deterioration and the underlying molecular mechanisms. This study examined the relationship between decreased force sense (FS)acuity and strength-related gene expressions.Materials and methods: Maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) and FS (50% MVIC) tests were performed on the kneejoints of twenty-two subjects. Data on the prevalence of allergic diseases in children with proven drug allergies are limited. We aim to evaluate thefrequency of allergic comorbidity in children with proven common drug allergies.Materials and methods: Children with drug hypersensitivity confirmed by diagnostic allergy tests at our center between January 2010and December 2020 were screened retrospectively. Patients with the most common drug allergies (due to antibiotics, nonsteroidalantiinflammatory drugs [NSAIDs], and antiepileptic drugs) were selected for analysis. Background/aim: This study aims to investigate the association between rs2267437, rs5751129 and rs132770 polymorphisms of the XRCC6 gene, which plays a role in repairing DNA double strand breaks, and the risk of Papillary Thyroid Cancer (PTC).Methods: The study included 150 patients who had been diagnosed with PTC and 204 healthy control subjects. Genotyping of SNPs was performed by Polymerase Chain Reaction - Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism method (PCR - RFLP).Results: In rs2267437 polymorphism, individuals with GG genotype had lower risk of PTC than wild-type CC genotype (p=0.037, 95% CI=0.19-0.96, OR=0.67). Background/aim: Sarcoidosis is a multisystem disorder that affects many organs, including the kidneys. This single-center retrospective study investigated the clinical, pathological, and laboratory findings of patients with kidney sarcoidosis who were treated with immunosuppressives.Materials and Methods: Twenty-three patients with biopsy-confirmed kidney sarcoidosis were included. Demographics, clinical, pathological, and laboratory findings, in addition to treatments, and outcomes of twenty patients with at least one month of follow-up were evaluated.Results: Median age at the time of biopsy was 47 years(60.9 % female). Background/aim: This study investigated the possible degeneration in cochlear morphology induced by preeclampsia (PE) and the therapeutic/preventive effect of vitamin D (Vit D) and magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) used separately and together on feto-maternal outcomes. Background/aim: Titanium dioxide nanoparticles are widely used in a variety of products, including sunscreens, paints, and ceramics. However, their increasing use has raised concerns about their potential health risks. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles have been shown to have the ability to enter the bloodstream and accumulate in various tissues, reaching the fetus via the placenta. The aim of this study was to investigate the cytotoxic effects of titanium dioxide nanoparticles on a human embryonic lung cell line (HEL 299/An1) and the formation of oxidative DNA damage. Materials and methods: The cytotoxic effects of brookite-based titanium dioxide nanoparticles (<100 nm) were assessed using the 3-(4,5-dimethyldiazol-2-yl)-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay for 24 and 48 h. Cell titanium levels were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Oxidative DNA damage was assessed by measuring the levels of 8-hydroxy-2- deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) as a biomarker. Results: Titanium dioxide nanoparticles caused dose-dependent cytotoxicity in HEL 299/An1 cells. The IC50 values were 25.93 μM and 0.054 μM after 24 h and 48 h of exposure, respectively. Cell titanium levels were found to be 25,967 ppb after 24 h and 210,353 ppb after 48 h (p < 0.01). 8-OHdG was detected at 32.96 ng/mL after 24 h of exposure and 17.89 ng/mL after 48 h of exposure. Conclusion: In our study, it was shown that titanium nanoparticles caused dose-dependent cytotoxicity and oxidative DNA damage in human embryonic lung cells. The nanoparticles also accumulated in cells and were taken up in higher amounts after 48 h of exposure. These findings suggest that titanium dioxide nanoparticles may pose a health risk, especially for pregnant women who may not be aware of their pregnancy. Therefore, it is important to take preventive measures to reduce exposure to these nanoparticles.
