Obesity In Children And Adolescents And Its Relationship With Hypertension, Dr Vijayanath Itagi, Ramesh Patil

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

It is difficult to project the prevalence of obesity and overweight among children in India since there is no nationally representative data from India. We determined the time trends in childhood obesity in a representative sample of schoolchildren from Raichur District, Karnataka and investigated the relationship of obesity with blood pressure. Materials and methods: We used a stratified random cluster sampling method to select the children. Anthropometric data were collected from 23,842 students, 5-16 years of age, during 2005-06. Blood pressure and anthropometric data were collected from 19,263 students during 2007-08. Overweight and obesity were defined by body mass index …

An Efficient Method For Stable Transfection Of Mouse Myogenic C2c12 Cell Line Using A Nonviral Transfection Approach, Mehmet Deni̇z Akyüz, Burcu Hayta, Pervi̇n Ruki̇ye Di̇nçer

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

To describe in detail the use of the T-REx^{TM} System (a tetracycline-regulated mammalian expression system; Invitrogen) for rapid, easy, and effective generation of stable C2C12 cell clones. Tetracycline-inducible stable cell lines are useful tools to study the function of various genes in different types of mammalian cells. However, the generation of stable cell lines is a time-consuming, technically difficult, and expensive process. Materials and methods: Generation of a stable C2C12 cell line was performed by stable transfection of the cells with the pcDNA6/TR plasmid vector, which contains the tetracycline repressor and the blasticidin drug resistance genes. The establishment of the …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Telogen effluvium (TE) is an abnormality of hair cycling. Vitamin D promotes hair follicle differentiation. The importance of vitamin D in hair growth is evident in patients with hereditary vitamin D receptor deficiency. The role of vitamin D in the pathogenesis of TE has not been investigated before. We investigated the role of vitamin D, ferritin, and zinc in the pathogenesis of TE. Materials and methods: We measured serum hemoglobin, ferritin, zinc, calcium, phosphate, parathormone, magnesium, 25 and 1,25-hydroxyvitamin D3, and bone alkaline phosphatase and thyroid stimulating hormone levels in 63 female patients and 50 control subjects. Twenty-nine of the …

Morphine Modulates Microvascular Leakage Dose-Dependently In The Airway Of Ovalbumin-Sensitized Rats, Seyfullah Oktay Arslan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

To investigate the effect of morphine on ovalbumin-evoked airway microvascular leakage in sensitized rats. Materials and methods: Rats were sensitized on days 0, 14, and 21 with ovalbumin. Intravenous ovalbumin (2 mg/kg) or capsaicin (50 µg/kg) increased the extravasation of Evans blue dye in trachea, bronchi, and intra-pulmonary tissues of sensitized rats. Results: Morphine (1-10 mg/kg) inhibited ovalbumin-evoked increase in microvascular plasma leakage in a dose-dependent manner; however, it had no significant effect at the doses of 0.1 or 30 mg/kg. In addition, morphine, at the doses of 1-30 mg/kg, abolished microvascular leakage increased by capsaicin. The inhibition caused by …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

To determine the psychosocial and demographic factors related to marital adjustment and emotional symptoms in infertile couples according to gender differences. Materials and methods: The study sample, consisting of 60 primary infertile couples, was assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory, State and Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Dyadic Adjustment Scale. The scores derived from men and women were compared according to infertility factor. Multiple regression analysis models were used to explore the linkages between emotional symptoms and marital adjustment. Results: Statistically significant gender differences were noted in affectional expression and sexual satisfaction domains of the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (P < 0.05). Our analyses showed that various aspects of marital adjustment have predictive power on anxiety and depressive symptoms of infertile men, especially when the infertility is due to male factor. Conclusion: Results of this study emphasize the importance of psychological and sexual counseling in the course of infertility treatment.

Trace Elements And Physical Activity In Children And Adolescents With Depression, M. Meti̇n Donma, Orki̇de Donma

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Depression is a common mental health problem among adolescents. Depressive symptoms are also important and may appear even during the preschool period. Physical activity, which may improve some mental health problems, is inversely associated with depression. Due to the presence of some clinical evidence about the relation between the use of antidepressants and suicide, there is a need for supportive agents during antidepressant therapy. Within this context, essential trace elements gain importance for further consideration. Protection of the developing brain from the negative effects of iron deficiency is important because of iron deficiency's association with poor mental development. Reactions between …

Home injuries are a serious public health problem for the elderly. Our aim was to investigate the prevalence of home injuries among elderly people in Samsun, Turkey, and the influencing factors. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between 1 January and 28 February 2007. A questionnaire, the Home-Screen Scale (HSS), and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) were administered to the elderly subjects. Results: Of all participants, 20.6% had experienced some kind of home injury. Seven participants living alone and 14 living with their families had suffered home injuries, suggesting a statistically significant difference between these 2 groups (P < 0.05). Eleven (14.7%) subjects living in secure housing and 10 (37.0%) living in unsecure housing had suffered home injuries, the difference again being statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Home injuries are more common among people living alone and in unsecure housing according to the HSS.

To examine the short tandem repeat (STR) data of Bolu population and compare the data with previously published population studies and with the data of a neighboring province, Düzce (a former district of Bolu), which became a province after the earthquake in 1999. Materials and methods: Blood samples were taken from 175 unrelated individuals. DNA was isolated using a DNA Kit and the amplification was performed using an AmpFlSTR Identifier kit. Genotyping was carried out by an ABI Prism 310 genetic analyzer by using a reference ladder. Several parameters, such as allele frequencies, Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, power of exclusion, power of …

Peritonitis is almost the most frequent complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD). Besides being the most frequent reason of hospitalization, peritonitis is also the most important determining factor of mortality-morbidity and technique survival among PD patients. In this study, it was aimed to identify the risk factors for peritonitis in these patients. Materials and methods: In this clinical cohort, records of 218 patients were collected between January 1998 and December 2007. The patients’ demographic, clinical, and laboratory parameters were recorded. Results were analyzed to compare patients who never had peritonitis and patients with at least one episode of peritonitis. Independent predictors …
