Background/aim: Upper lumbar disc herniation (LDH), generally involving L1?L2 and L2?L3 level herniation, is less common than lower LDH and, in this retrospective study, the clinical and radiological findings of patients who suffered from upper LDH and were operated on due to this pathology were reviewed. Materials and methods: Data regarding neurological and radiological findings of patients operated on between January 2005 and December 2013 were retrospectively collected. During this period, 3494 patients had surgery for LDH, and 129 of these patients had disc herniation at the upper levels. Seventy-eight patients with proper follow-up and data were included in the …

Background/aim: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a multifactorial disease, determined by environmental and genetic factors. Currently, the transcription factor 7-like 2 (TCF7L2) gene shows the strongest association with T2D. In this study, we investigated whether TCF7L2 gene polymorphisms are associated with T2D in a Turkish population. Materials and methods: Using PCR-RFLP and PCR-SSCP, we genotyped six intronic polymorphisms in the TCF7L2 gene, commonly associated with T2D, in 169 individuals with diabetes and 119 healthy controls. Results: We found that rs7903146 C -> T substitution in intron 3 (OR: 1.9, P = 0.005) and rs12255372 G -> T substitution in intron …

The aim of the study was to assess psychosocial outcomes in people with diabetes Materials and methods: A total of 142 people with type 2 diabetes were recruited from a specialist diabetes center. The validated Urdu version of the WHO-5 Well-Being Index was administered for easy understanding of the quality of life of the regional population. Results: The 142 adult participants with diabetes were recruited from a specialist diabetes clinic. The rate of likely depression (WHO-5 score of <28) was 16.9%. Neuropathy was found to have a negative impact on the quality of life in people with diabetes (P 6lt; 0.001). Conclusion: People with complications of diabetes like neuropathy may experience worsening quality of life. It is advised to incorporate the WHO-5 into annual patient reviews as a measure of emotional well-being to drive changes that improve outcomes for people with diabetes.

Background/aim: Outer inflammatory protein A (OipA) is an important adhesin of Helicobacter pylori. Our goal was to assess the role of OipA in protection of C57BL/6 mice against H. pylori. Materials and methods: C57BL/6 mice were mucosally immunized with recombinant OipA protein, OipA + propolis, propolis, and phosphate-buffered saline. After vaccination, anti-OipA IgA was measured. Mice were challenged three times with 5 x 107 CFU of the H. pylori B19 strain. Two weeks later, bacterial colonization and inflammation in the stomach was analyzed using standard methods. Results: The CFU number in the OipA group was significantly (P < 0.05) lower than that of the control. The CFU number in the OipA + propolis group was higher than those of the OipA and propolis groups. IgA titers were significantly higher (P < 0.0001) in the OipA group compared to the control and OipA + propolis groups. Propolis did not play an adjuvant effect but it interfered with the efficient vaccine effect of OipA. Conclusion: Results show the effect of vaccination by OipA in protection of the mouse model and the importance of OipA in H. pylori pathogenesis. OipA may be proposed as a suitable oral vaccine candidate against H. pylori infection; however, further study is required to determine adjuvant or adverse effects of propolis toward OipA.

Background/aim: To study the effect of kisspeptin, a gonadotropin release stimulator, on the testicular tissue of the rat. Materials and methods: Four groups were formed as follows: control, Kiss-10 50 nmol administration for 1 day, Kiss-10 administration for 13 days, and one last group kept for 7 days following Kiss-10 applied for 13 days. Testicular tissues were stained with hematoxylin-eosin, periodic acid Schiff, Masson trichrome staining, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferased UTP nick-end labeling, and Ki-67 immune staining. Serum testosterone levels were determined. Results: Serum testosterone level increased following acute application, while it was reduced by chronic treatment. Spermatogenic cells as stained …

Background/aim: Metoclopramide is an effective and commonly used medication in acute migraine treatment but an experimental evidence base is lacking. We aimed to investigate the antimigraine effect of metoclopramide in a migraine model and whether the analgesic effect of metoclopramide was likely to be D2 receptor-mediated. Materials and methods: Cortical spreading depression (CSD) was used to model migraine in adult male Wistar rats. Five CSDs were induced by pinprick. Metoclopramide (two different doses), raclopride, or 0.9% saline were administered 30 min before CSD induction. Two hours after the experiments, brain tissues were examined for c-fos activation. Results: In metoclopramide groups …
