Background/aim: This study aimed to investigate the effects of two different medical treatment options on choroidal thickness (CT) in patients with primary hypertension. Materials and methods: Forty newly diagnosed primary hypertension patients and 21 healthy volunteers were included. The patients were randomly divided into two subgroups. Group I started on perindopril arginine and Group II started on amlodipine. Submacular CT using optical coherence tomography (OCT) was measured before treatment and at the third and sixth months after treatment. Results: Initial mean arterial pressure (MAP) values in Groups I and II and the control group were 113.4, 109.8, and 89.4 mmHg, …

Background/aim: Spontaneous wheals and/or angioedema lasting longer than six weeks are described as chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU). Omalizumab is used for the treatment of antihistamine-resistant CSU. The neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet- lymphocyte ratio (PLR), mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet distribution width (PDW) are considered important indicators of inflammation and platelet activation in chronic diseases. We aimed to determine the NLR, PLR, MPV, and PDW levels in patients with CSU compared with healthy controls. We also aimed to investigate the effects of omalizumab therapy on these parameters in CSU patients. Materials and methods: This hospital-based, retrospective study included 143 patients …

Materials and methods: Data from 30 patients for whom AUS reimplantation was performed were analyzed retrospectively. Incontinence due to fluid loss from the cuff or reservoir balloon, inability of the cuff to adequately compress the urethra, and devices …

Background/aim: Epileptic seizure leads to sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) among affected patients. The causes of SUDEP are still unclear. The aim of this study was to research the effect of epilepsy on myocardial injury and arrhythmias during experimentally induced acute myocardial ischemia. Materials and methods: Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups: sham, pentylentetrazole (PTZ) + sham, ischemia, and PTZ + ischemia groups. PTZ (65 mg/kg, ip) was given 2 h before ischemia. Seizure scoring was conducted by evaluating the PTZ-induced behavioral changes in the rats. The left main coronary artery was ligated in anesthetized rats for …

Polycythemia Vera: Diagnosis, Clinical Course, And Current Management, Yahya Büyükaşik, Ridvan Ali̇, Muhli̇s Cem Ar, Mehmet Turgut, Aki̇f Seli̇m Yavuz, Güray Saydam
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Very important developments related to polycythemia vera (PV) have occurred during the last two decades. The discovery of Janus kinase (JAK) 2 mutations has changed both the diagnosis and clinical management of PV. Currently JAK2 molecular testing is essential in the diagnostic work-up and JAK2 mutation positivity is a major diagnostic criterion. The discovery of JAK2 mutations suggested that abnormal JAK-STAT signaling was a pivotal feature in the pathogenesis of Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms. This idea led to the development of JAK inhibitors. Currently ruxolitinib, a JAK1/JAK2 inhibitor, is also approved for PV patients with hydroxyurea resistance or intolerance. International collaborations …

Background/aim: After allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT), donor natural killer (NK) cells trigger alloreactions against potential recipient cells by their killer immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIRs). This study investigated whether KIR/HLA genotypes and KIR haplotypes of donors and recipients exhibit a critical function in the prevalence of acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) and persistence of the graft after HLA-identical sibling allo-HSCT for patients with hematological malignancies. Materials and methods: We studied KIR and HLA genotypes in 115 related donors and recipients (56 patients with AML and 59 patients with ALL) who had received allo-HSCT from HLA-matched sibling donors. We evaluated 17 KIR …

Background/aim: This study was designed to evaluate the effect of antimicrobial photodynamic treatment (APDT) in a biofilm model using combinations of various dyes (rose bengal, riboflavin, and methylene blue) as photosensitizers and light sources (LED and UVA) against staphylococcal and candidal biofilms. Materials and methods: Sterile microtiter plates were used for the development and quantification of the biofilms. APDT was carried out using combinations of the light sources and dyes. The percentage of the growth inhibition was then calculated using a spectrophotometer. The broth media in the wells were aspirated, wells were stained with crystal violet, and optical density values …

Background/aim: Insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I is a differentiation and growth factor. Antifibrotic action of octreotide has been reported in pulmonary fibrosis. The present study aimed to research the prophylactic and therapeutic potential of octreotide on a bleomycin (BLM)-induced experimental scleroderma model. Materials and methods: Sixty Balb/c female mice were divided into 6 groups. Daily subcutaneous BLM (100 μg) was injected for 3 weeks in groups II and III and for 6 weeks in groups V and VI. Octreotide (100 μg/kg per day) was injected subcutaneously for the first 3 weeks in group III (prophylactic) and the second 3 weeks in …

Background/aim: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) frequently affects the small joints of the hand and may result in difficulty in activities of daily living. There are very few studies evaluating the problems encountered in the hands in patients with SLE. The aim of this study is to evaluate hand functions in patients with SLE and compare them with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients and healthy subjects. Materials and methods: A total 46 female patients meeting the SLE classification criteria were recruited. Similarly, 51 female RA patients and 46 healthy female subjects served as the control groups. To assess the upper extremity disability …
