On January 30, 2020, the WHO declared the COVID-19 outbreak a public health emergency of international concern and, in March 2020, began to characterize it as a pandemic in order to emphasize the gravity of the situation and urge all countries to take action in detecting infection and preventing spread. Unfortunately, there is no medication that has been approved by the FDA, gone through controlled studies and demonstrated an effect on the virus for this global pandemic. Although there are cures for illnesses and developments made by leaps and bounds in our day, the strongest and most effective weapon that …

Background/aim: Oral corticosteroid (OCS)-dependent severe eosinophilic asthma with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (SEACRSwNP) would be a suitable phenotype for mepolizumab treatment. This study evaluated the short-term efficacy of mepolizumab treatment in OCS-dependent SEA-CRSwNP. Materials and methods: Baseline and 24th week results [daily OCS doses, asthma exacerbation frequency, asthma control test (ACT) scores, blood eosinophil levels, FEV1 values, and numerical analog scale (NAS) of CRSwNP symptoms] of patients who were treated for at least 24 weeks with mepolizumab were retrospectively evaluated and compared. Results: A total of 16 patients were enrolled in the study. Mepolizumab was discontinued in one patient …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Tumour budding (BD) is considered a valuable prognostic factor in colon cancer (CC), but its use in daily practice is uncertain. We investigated the prognostic effect of BD using preoperative biopsy specimens in a fairly homogeneous population. Materials and methods: Eighty-two (pN0) CC patients who underwent surgery after preoperative biopsy between 1997 and 2013 were included in the study. Model A (using the `deeply invasive blocks & hot-spot area & invasive margin) and method 1 (using the `20× objective & immunohistochemistry staining & quantitive counting') were used as standard methods. Results: High BD was significantly associated with poor prognostic …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: To adapt the Sunnybrook facial grading system (SFGS) into Turkish and perform validation and reliability studies on the Turkish version. Materials and Methods: The original English version of the SFGS was translated into Turkish by performing a linguistic validity study based on international standards. The evaluators comprised 6 physicians. Evaluations were performed twice independently using the video recordings of 65 facial palsy patients. Synchronously, the House-Brackman facial grading system (HBFGS) was filled out to display concurrent validity. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Cronbach's alpha was used for the examination of the inter- and intra-rater reliability. As another indication …

A global public health problem with a high rate spread and transmission, Coronavirus outbreak has become the most talkedabout matter throughout the world. We are severely affected by the nations with vast numbers of deaths; it was hard to predict such a colossal pandemic with terrifying consequences. Elective surgeries are limited, but situations requiring an urgent gynaecological or obstetric surgical approach must still be performed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Concerns regarding surgical safety and the risk of viral transmission during surgery are of great importance. In this review, we aimed to summarize the concepts related to laparoscopic gynecological surgery during …

: COVID-19 infection, a highly contagious disease caused by the SARS-CoV virus, and the World Health Organization declared this increasingly spreading disease as a global public health emergency (pandemic). In the diagnosis of COVID-19, the polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) is considered as the reference standard test. In the early stages, thorax CT findings could be present even before the onset of symptoms, thorax CT has quite high sensitivity in COVID-19 patients with false negative RT-PCR results, and it has a great importance not only in diagnosis but also in follow up. We think that it might be beneficial for our …

Chest Ct Features Of The Novel Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19), Furkan Ufuk, Recep Savaş
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
A new type of coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is rapidly spreading worldwide and causes pneumonia, respiratory distress, thromboembolic events, and death. Chest computed tomography (CT) plays an essential role in the diagnosis of viral pneumonia, monitoring disease progression, determination of disease severity, and evaluating therapeutic efficacy. Chest CT can show important clues of 2019-nCoV disease (also known as COVID-19) in patients with an appropriate clinic. Prompt diagnosis of COVID-19 is essential to prevent disease transmission and provides close clinical observation of patients with clinically severe disease. Therefore, radiologists and clinicians should be familiar with the CT imaging findings of COVID-19 pneumonia. Herein, …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Latest version of Bayley Scales (Bayley-III) and its predecessor (BSID-II) are the most widely used standardized developmental tools in infancy and early childhood. Recent studies showed that Bayley-III scores were higher than BSID-II in 18-24 month-old and mostly premature infants. We aimed to evaluate the generalization of inflated scores of Bayley-III to children aged 6-42 months with different disease groups, and to find out which cut-off points should be used in Bayley-III to detect mild, moderate, and severe developmental delay according to BSID-II standard cut-off points. Materials and methods: Two hundred and fifty-five children aged 6-42 months with different …
