Maintenance Of Pulmonary Rehabilitation Benefits In Patients With Copd: Is A Structured5-Year Follow-Up Program Helpful?, İpek Candemi̇r, Pinar Ergün, Mustafa Engi̇n Şahi̇n

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) has proven useful in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but the benefits decrease over time. We evaluated the effects of a structured follow-up program after PR on patient pulmonary function, dyspnea, body composition, exercise capacity, quality of life, psychological status, i-BODE index, hospitalization status, 5-year survival rate. We explored whether this follow-up program could serve as a maintenance program. Materials and methods: COPD patients who completed PR attended follow-up visits over 5 years. We administered incremental (ISWT), endurance shuttle walk tests (ESWT), measured body (BMI), fat-free mass indices (FFMI), recorded modified Medical Research Council …

Background/aim: We aimed to explore the roles of glycoprotein glycosylation in the pathogenesis of Kashin-Beck disease (KBD), and evaluated the effectiveness of sodium hyaluronate treatment. Materials and methods: Blood and saliva were collected from KBD patients before and after the injection of sodium hyaluronate. Normal healthy subjects were included as controls. Saliva and serum lectin microarrays and saliva and serum microarray verifications were used to screen and confirm the differences in lectin levels among the three groups. Results: In saliva lectin microarray, bindings to Sophora japonica agglutinin (SJA), Griffonia (Bandeiraea) simplicifolia lectin I (GSL-I), Euonymus europaeus lectin (EEL), Maackia amurensis …

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to determine the age-related latency interval of P1 latencies of children with normal hearing, and to evaluate the P1 latency changes after surgery in children who underwent cochlear implantation. Materials and methods: We evaluated 60 children with normal hearing and 16 children with cochlear implants aged 0-6 years using cortical auditory evoked potentials. P1 latencies were measured only once in the children with normal hearing, and on the postoperative first day, and the first, third, and sixth postoperative months in the children with cochlear implants. Results: There was a statistically significant decrease in …

Investigation The Potential Use Of Silver Nanoparticles Synthesized By Propolis Extract As N-Acyl-Homoserine Lactone-Mediated Quorum Sensing Systems Inhibitor, Sedef İlk, Gamze Tan, Ezgi̇ Emül, Necdet Sağlam

Background/aim: Quorum sensing (QS) is a chemical communication process that bacteria use to regulate virulence. Inhibition of QS (antiQS) overcomes the pathogenicity of bacteria. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been used as antimicrobials against pathogens, but have not been used against QS-mediated bacterial infection. Also, studies have been carried out on the inhibitory effects of propolis based structures on pathogen growth, but no studies have been found on their potential use as QS inhibitor. The present study aims to investigate the synthesis and characterization of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) reduced with propolis extract (P-AgNPs) and evaluation of their antimicrobial and, for the …
