Development Of Corn Kernel-Based Biocomposite Films For Food Packaging Applications, Swastika Bera Jan 2023

Development Of Corn Kernel-Based Biocomposite Films For Food Packaging Applications, Swastika Bera

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Most of the current and active food packaging resources and methods are nonbiodegradable and nonrenewable therefore harmful to the environment. Due to this, alternate sources of food packaging materials are in high demand. In this study, a bio-composite film has been developed, with Corn kernel powder as fiber reinforcement which is mixed with gelatin, and lignin two biopolymers as the matrix. The effect of Corn Kernel (CK) reinforcement on the Gelatin/Lignin (G/L) matrix on mechanical and barrier properties has been studied. CK has shown great potential as reinforcement to natural polymer, gelatin, and lignin (G/L) for food packaging applications as …

Dynamic Modeling Of Commercial-Off-The-Shelf Smart Inverters Using Power-Hardware-In-The-Loop, Bidur Poudel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Inverter-based generation is replacing synchronous-based generation in the power grid. In the past, due to the dominance of synchronous-based generation, inverter-based generation dynamics were typically under-modeled as they made little contribution to voltage and frequency control. Looking at the present context, several disturbances, like the Blue Cut Fire (CA), on August 16, 2016, the South Australian Blackout on September 28, 2016, and the Canyon Two Fire Disturbance (CA) on October 9, 2017, etc., are caused by the influence of converter-based resources. So, for converter-dominated power system stability analysis and control, the dynamics of an inverter-based system cannot be under-modeled. In …

Consumer Internet of Things (CIoT) manufacturers seek customer feedback to enhance their products and services, creating a smart ecosystem, like a smart home. Due to security and privacy concerns, blockchain-based federated learning (BCFL) ecosystems can let CIoT manufacturers update their machine learning (ML) models using end-user data. Federated learning (FL) uses privacy-preserving ML techniques to forecast customers' needs and consumption habits, and blockchain replaces the centralized aggregator to safeguard the ecosystem. However, blockchain technology (BCT) struggles with scalability and quick ledger expansion. In BCFL, local model generation and secure aggregation are other issues. This research introduces a novel architecture, emphasizing …

Pre-trained language models (PLMs) have demonstrated their exceptional performance across a wide range of natural language processing tasks. The utilization of PLM-based sentence embeddings enables the generation of contextual representations that capture rich semantic information. However, despite their success with unseen samples, current PLM-based representations suffer from poor robustness in adversarial scenarios. In this paper, we propose RobustEmbed, a self-supervised sentence embedding framework that enhances both generalization and robustness in various text representation tasks and against diverse adversarial attacks. By generating high-risk adversarial perturbations to promote higher invariance in the embedding space and leveraging the perturbation within a novel contrastive …

Large-scale Knowledge Graphs (KGs) have recently gained considerable research attention for their ability to model the inter- and intra- relationships of data. However, the huge scale of KGs has necessitated the use of querying methods to facilitate human use. Question Answering (QA) systems have shown much promise in breaking down this human-machine barrier. A recent QA model that achieved state-of-the-art performance, Query2box, modelled queries on a KG using box embeddings with an attention mechanism backend to compute the intersections of boxes for query resolution. In this paper, we introduce a new model, Query2Geom, which replaces the Query2box attention mechanism with …

Action Classification In Human Robot Interaction Cells In Manufacturing, Shakra S.M. Mehak, Maria Chiara Leva, John Kelleher, Michael Guilfoyle

Conference papers

Action recognition has become a prerequisite approach to fluent Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) due to a high degree of movement flexibility. With the improvements in machine learning algorithms, robots are gradually transitioning into more human-populated areas. However, HRI systems demand the need for robots to possess enough cognition. The action recognition algorithms require massive training datasets, structural information of objects in the environment, and less expensive models in terms of computational complexity. In addition, many such algorithms are trained on datasets derived from daily activities. The algorithms trained on non-industrial datasets may have an unfavorable impact on implementing models and validating …

Optimal Design Of Special High Torque Density Electric Machines Based On Electromagnetic Fea, Murat G. Kesgin Jan 2023

Optimal Design Of Special High Torque Density Electric Machines Based On Electromagnetic Fea, Murat G. Kesgin

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Electric machines with high torque density are essential for many low-speed direct-drive systems, such as wind turbines, electric vehicles, and industrial automation. Permanent magnet (PM) machines that incorporate a magnetic gearing effect are particularly useful for these applications due to their potential for achieving extremely high torque density. However, when the number of rotor polarities is increased, there is a corresponding need to increase the number of stator slots and coils proportionally. This can result in manufacturing challenges. A new topology of an axial-flux vernier-type machine of MAGNUS type has been presented to address the mentioned limitation. These machines can …

Swarm Intelligence For Solving Some Nonlinear Differential Equations, Ahmed Elzaghal, Mohammed Mohammed Elgamal, Ahmed H. Eltanboly

Mansoura Engineering Journal

The Euler method is a well-known numerical technique employed for solving initial value problems of ordinary differential equations. The solution obtained through Euler's method is subject to significant inaccuracies, which tend to amplify with each successive iteration. The Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is a highly effective method for finding optimal solutions to both linear and nonlinear optimization problems. In this particular investigation, the PSO technique was utilized to solve initial value problems associated with ordinary differential equations. The Euler method, on the other hand, employs equidistant grid points to approximate solutions, which can result in significant errors and a …

Numerical Simulation Of The Donor-Assisted Stir Material For Friction Stir Welding Of Aluminum Alloys And Carbon Steel, Joseph Maniscalco, Abdelmageed A. Elmustafa, Srinivasa Bhukya, Zhenhua Wu

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

In this research effort, we explore the use of a donor material to help heat workpieces without wearing the tool or adding more heat than necessary to the system. The donor material would typically be a small piece (or pieces) of material, presumably of lower strength than the workpiece but with a comparable melting point. The donor, a sandwich material, is positioned between the tool head and the material to be welded, where the tool initially plunges and heats up in the same manner as the parent material that is intended for welding. The donor material heats up subsequent to …

Friction stir welding of high-strength materials such as steels is the impeded by the lack of the vast heat input needed to start the process. Contact friction is considered the most dominant source of heat generation for FSW steels which tends to cause severe wear conditions of the tool hear. To relieve the extreme wear conditions that occur on the tool heads because of FSW steels, we introduce the non-mixing Cu donor stir material to friction stir welding of aluminum alloys. The elastic properties of the Cu donor assisted friction stir welded aluminum alloys are measured using nanoindentation. The hardness …

Energy-Efficient Multi-Rate Opportunistic Routing In Wireless Mesh Networks, Mohammad Ali Mansouri Khah, Neda Moghim, Nasrin Gholami, Sachin Shetty

VMASC Publications

Opportunistic or anypath routing protocols are focused on improving the performance of traditional routing in wireless mesh networks. They do so by leveraging the broadcast nature of the wireless medium and the spatial diversity of the network. Using a set of neighboring nodes, instead of a single specific node, as the next hop forwarder is a crucial aspect of opportunistic routing protocols, and the selection of the forwarder set plays a vital role in their performance. However, most opportunistic routing protocols consider a single transmission rate and power for the nodes, which limits their potential. To address this limitation, this …
