The Philippine Agricultural Scientist

Pangi (Pangium edule Reinw) seed is known to be a poisonous material. However, it becomes safe for consumption after processing. This study determined the effect of village-level processing by the Obu Manuvu community of Marilog District, Davao City, Philippines on the antinutrient and nutritional composition of Pangi seeds. Processing methods involved washing with running water for about 15 s, boiling in water for 30 min, and soaking in flowing water in a nearby river overnight. Results showed that after processing, the levels of antinutrients such as cyanogenic glycosides and oxalates were reduced significantly (p < 0.05) by 99.15% and 78.23%, respectively. Further, the tannin content was also significantly reduced by 96.15%. The crude fat content significantly increased (p < 0.05) by about 54%. Crude ash and fiber decreased, while protein did not change significantly (p < 0.05). Minerals such as calcium and zinc increased (p < 0.05) by 221.43% and 64.39%, respectively while the iron and manganese levels remained unaffected. Findings of the study suggested that the processing method by the Obu Manuvu effectively reduces the level of antinutrients, thereby improving the edibility and safety of Pangi seeds. Further, the processing method improves the level of some nutrients, specifically crude fat, calcium, and zinc.

Cellular Mechanism Of Pentagalloyl Glucose-Mediated Prevention And Reversal Of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms, Greg Halsey

All Dissertations

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) has been the 15th leading cause of death in persons older than 55 for the past ten years in several Western countries, with rupture resulting in an almost 100% mortality rate. AAA is a focal dilation of the aorta characterized by progressive loss of elastin and vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs), as well as persistent inflammatory response [1]. The only treatment for AAA is surgery; however, the mortality post-procedure is still 1-4%, with a 15-30% chance of morbidity [2].

Pentagalloyl glucose (PGG) treatment is effective in the reversal of AAA. While its stabilizing interactions with extracellular …

Symposium of Student Scholars

This research aims to transform cancer treatment through the optimization of brachytherapy, with a focus on reducing treatment duration, setup complexities, and financial burdens, all while emphasizing patient safety. Patients living at a distance from radiation clinics, particularly those undergoing extended Low Dose Radiation brachytherapy, often struggle with the formidable financial challenges associated with securing nearby accommodations. In response to these issues, the research introduces a radiation capsule designed to condense the conventional six-month treatment period to approximately just one week, thereby significantly reducing the duration of required accommodations. This capsule is especially relevant considering the construction cost of $40 …

Effects Of Thinning On The Incidence Of Damage And Severity Of Decay In Bagras (Eucalyptus Deglupta Blume) Plantations, Emelio Anino

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

Thinning of intermediate and suppressed trees has been implemented on 3- to 4-year-old bagras (E. deglupta) plantations in Surigao de! Sur, Philippines. The objective is to remove unwanted competition and to gain some form of revenue by selling the felled trees as banana props. However, the falling trees caused damage to other plantation trees. Bagras is susceptible to heart rot. A study was, therefore, conducted to determine the extent of decay in bagras due to thinning. Data showed that injured bagras developed extensive decay in the sapwood and heartwood. Six percent of the injured trees died. Retained-trees, which were already …

Seasonal Orientation Of Solar Collectors For The Philippines, Saiful Bari

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

In this paper, a method to determine the slope angle for seasonal applications of flat plate collectors is described for the Philippines territory. For seasonal applications, where the collectors are used only for a fraction of the year, the slope angles need to be different from those for year-round operations. For year-round operations, most flat collectors are usually fixed, and mounted at an angle equal to the latitude tilt angle. The method described here utilized both direct and diffuse components of solar radiation, and air mass using average atmosphere. For seasonal applications of solar energy such as crop drying, the …
