The 14-Day Rule For In Vitro Human Embryo Research Requires Adjustment: From A Comprehensive Perspective Of Science, Ethics And Policy Research, Xiao Lu, Ming Zhao, Huihui Liu, Tianqing Li, Tao Tan, Weizhi Ji

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

Since it was proposed, in vitro human embryo research had been following the 14-day rule, which limited in vitro research on human embryos within 14 days after fertilization. With the advancement in embryo culturing technology, this ethical rule has been greatly challenged. In 2021, the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) recommended a conditional extension of the existing time limit in ISSCR Guidelines for Stem Cell Research and Clinical Translation, hence the international scientific community has restarted the debate on the 14-day rule. This study systematically analyzed the historical background and controversies of the 14-day rule ethical regulation of …

novel method was explored in this study to address water contamination challenges by utilizing nanofiber mat-supported metalloporphyrin materials. Specifically, electrospinning was employed to create various compositions of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) mixed with different concentrations of Co(II) complex of tetrakis-5, 10, 15, 20 (4-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin Co(II)TPHPP 1 anchored to chloroacetylated poly (p-hydroxy styrene) CAPS. These resulting nanofiber mat-supported metalloporphyrin materials were comprehensively analyzed using UV, FTIR spectrum, SEM, and TGA thermographs. The study found that the designed nanofibers acted as efficient catalysts for the oxidative breakdown of crystal violet (CV) dye using H2O2 in aqueous solutions. Among these materials, the nanofiber composed of …

Nebraska Center for Biotechnology: Faculty and Staff Publications

Spaceflight presents a unique environment with complex stressors, including microgravity and radiation, that can influence plant physiology at molecular levels. Combining transcriptomics and proteomics approaches, this research gives insights into the coordination of transcriptome and proteome in Arabidopsis’ molecular and physiological responses to Spaceflight environmental stress. Arabidopsis seedlings were germinated and grown in microgravity (μg) aboard the International Space Station (ISS) in NASA Biological Research in Canisters – Light Emitting Diode (BRIC LED) hardware, with the ground control established on Earth. At 10 days old, seedlings were frozen in RNA-later and returned to Earth. RNA-seq transcriptomics and TMTlabeled LC-MS/MS proteomic …

Valorising Urban Organic Waste Streams Through Agrochemical Extraction And Organic Acid Production Via Cascading Biorefinery Approach, Shon Shiju Mr

ORBioM (Open Research BioSciences Meeting)

The CircBioCityWaste project is based on the vital principle of the ‘circular bioeconomy’ focusing on the sustainable, resource-efficient valorisation of anaerobic digestate, from urban waste streams (mainly, wastewater treatment plants, dairy processed sludge (DPS), food waste, and organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW)) to produce bio-based agrochemicals (biostimulants and biofertilisers) and organic acids via the cascading biorefinery concept. The project focuses on an ‘end-of-waste’ approach to producing deliverables for sustainable agriculture, promoting plant growth, and improving soil health while keeping circular bio-economy aspects in the focus. The biorefinery starts with digestate collection, characterisation, development of pre-treatment methods, and novel …

Purpose: Predict central 10° global and local visual field (VF) measurements from macular optical coherence tomography (OCT) volume scans with deep learning (DL). Methods: This study included 1121 OCT volume scans and 10-2 VFs from 289 eyes (257 patients). Macular scans were used to estimate 10-2 VF mean deviation (MD), threshold sensitivities (TS), and total deviation (TD) values at 68 locations. A three-dimensional (3D) convolutional neural network based on the 3D DenseNet121 architecture was used for prediction. We compared DL predictions to those from baseline linear models. We carried out 10-fold stratified cross-validation to optimize generalizability. The performance of the …

Anti Cancer Activity Of Rhus Coriaria (Sumac) Against 5-Fluorouracil-Resistant Colorectal Cancer Cells, Zohra Nausheen Nizami

Theses

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths, both worldwide and in the UAE. 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU), a pyrimidine analogue, is a chemotherapeutic agent that is an integral component of chemotherapy regimens for CRC treatment. However, 5-FU resistance (intrinsic and/or acquired) inhibits their clinical efficacy. In recent years, there has been a growing popularity for plant-based cancer therapeutics, specifically using phytochemical compounds. Rhus coriaria (Sumac) is a Mediterranean plant whose fruits are used as a spice and medicinal herb. Extracts of Rhus coriaria fruits (RCE) have been reported to exhibit anti-cancer activity against breast cancer and CRC. In …
