Background/aim: The progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in recipients of living-donor liver transplant (LDLT) compared to deceased-donor liver transplant (DDLT) has not been studied in the literature. We hypothesize that CKD stage progression in LDLT recipients is reduced compared to that of their DDLT counterparts. Materials and methods: A retrospective study was undertaken including 999 adult, single-organ, primary liver transplant recipients (218 LDLT and 781 DDLT) at 2 centers between January 2003 and December 2012, in which CKD progression and regression were evaluated within the first 3 years after transplantation. Results: Waiting time from evaluation to transplantation was significantly …

Background/aim: Two different scoring systems were developed to determine the severity of bronchiectasis: FACED scoring and the bronchiectasis severity index (BSI). In this study, we aim to compare these 2 scoring systems according to the 6-min walking distance test and a disease-specific health status questionnaire in patients with noncystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (NCFB). Materials and methods: Smoking history, emergency and hospital admissions, and body mass index were obtained from NCFB patients admitted to our hospitals' pulmonary rehabilitation unit between 2013 and 2018. Detailed pulmonary function tests were performed for all participants. Dyspnea perceptions were determined according to the mMRC dyspnea scale. …

Background/aim: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most aggressive cancer types. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding regulatory RNAs that function posttranscriptionally. miRNA deregulation was observed in the development and progression of HCC. In this study, we aimed to investigate the expression levels of four miRNAs (mir-33a, mir-203b, mir361-3p, and mir-424) in HCC patients in comparison to healthy individuals. Materials and methods: Venous blood samples were collected from both HCC patients and healthy individuals. In order to determine the relative expression levels of mir-33a, mir-203b, mir361-3p, and hsa-mir-424 in HCC patients, probe-based quantitative real time PCR (qRT-PCR) was performed. The …

Basal And Pentagastrin-Stimulated Calcitonin Cut-Off Values In Diagnosis Of Preoperativemedullary Thyroid Cancer, Emi̇ne Kartal Baykan, Mehmet Erdoğan
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) originates from parafollicular cells (C cell) and produces calcitonin (CT). Basal serum CT was used in the diagnosis and treatment of MTC. If basal CT level is 100 pg/mL or higher, it is likely to have MTC, but if basal CT level is below 10 pg/mL, the probability of developing thyroid disease is low. In cases with basal CT level between 10-100 pg/mL, pentagastrin-stimulated (PS) CT level is studied to evaluate MTC and C cell hyperplasia (CHH). This study aimed to determine cut-off value for basal and PS peak CT level for diagnosis of MTC. …

Background/aim: It is believed that radiotherapy has important effects on oxidant/antioxidant systems. Oxidative stress occurs when the balance between oxidant formation and antioxidant defense is disrupted in favor of oxidants. The aim of this study was to determine the biochemical changes in saliva pre- and postradiotherapy in head-neck radiotherapy patients and to find out the effects of radiation on glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in saliva. Materials and methods: This study included 16 patients undergoing head-neck radiotherapy in Atatürk University Research Hospital. The levels of GSH, GSH-Px, and MDA were measured in saliva samples taken from …

We developed a new grading system called fat necrosis deposit-CTSI (FND-CTSI), which was the sum of FND and CTSI scores. The relationship between grading systems and mortality, length of hospital-intensive care unit stay, surgical …

Background/aim: Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4) inhibitors, a class of oral antidiabetic drugs, have been shown to be protective on the vascular system because of their antiinflammatory, antiatherosclerotic, and vasodilatory effects. ß2 -adrenoceptors (ß2 -ARs) mediate the vasorelaxation in the aorta. However, ß3 -adrenoceptor-mediated relaxation has not been studied in diabetic aorta yet. Thus, we aimed to study the effect of sitagliptin treatment on ß2 - and ß3 -adrenoceptor-mediated relaxations in the diabetic rat aorta. Materials and methods: Eight-week old Sprague Dawley rats were divided into three groups: control, diabetic, sitagliptin treated diabetic. Diabetes was induced by injection of streptozotocin (35 or …

Background/aim: Fatigue is very common symptom in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) and adversely affects health-related quality of life and the ability to perform daily living activities. This study aimed to determine the severity of fatigue, and its related factors, in patients with SSc. Materials and methods: A total of 35 patients with SSc (6 males and 29 females, mean age of 50.71 ± 10.09 years) and 35 healthy control subjects (8 males and 27 females, mean age of 54.14 ± 9.51 years) were included in this study. The Fatigue Impact Scale for fatigue, Modified Medical Research Council Scale for …

Background/aim: Arterial stiffness, known as a predictor of early vascular aging, was defined as the main determinant of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. However, the relationship between lipid profile and increased arterial stiffness is not clear. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between lipid profiles and increased arterial stiffness in patients with early vascular aging syndrome. Materials and methods: A total of 1582 participants -504 (31.8%) of were male and the mean age was 52.8 ±14.2 years' were included in the study . Patients who applied to the hospital for various reasons and who had undergone 24-h …
