Effects Of Pulmonary Rehabilitation On Diaphragm Thickness And Contractility In Patients With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Seçi̇lay Güneş, Aysun Genç, Yeşi̇m Kurtai̇ş, Fatma Çi̇ftci̇, Serhat Hayme, Akin Kaya
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Studies are showing that pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) increases diaphragmatic excursion by decreasing hyperinflation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, there is a lack of knowledge about its effects on the diaphragm thickness (dt) and contractility. This study aims to evaluate the dt and contractility before and after PR in patients with COPD. Materials and methods: All subjects participated in an out-patient PR of 6 weeks and 3 sessions per week prospectively. Dyspnea severity, the disease-specific quality of life (St. Georges Respiratory Questionnaire-SGRQ), pulmonary function tests (PFT), exercise capacity, the dt at the end of the expiration …

Predictors Of Postendoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography Associated Cholangitis: A Retrospective Cohort Study, Hasan Yilmaz, Burcu Koçyi̇ği̇t
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Post-ERCP cholangitis (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) and associated sepsis can be life- threatening. Despite the wealth of studies on post-ERCP pancreatitis risk factors, there is limited data on post-ERCP cholangitis. This study aimed to investigate the rates, predictors, and outcomes of post-ERCP cholangitis. Materials and methods: A retrospective review of 452 ERCP cases performed by a single endoscopist at a tertiary center between March 2019 and February 2021 was performed. Patient-related, organizational and periprocedural factors that could affect post-ERCP cholangitis were evaluated. Predictors of post-ERCP cholangitis were determined by multivariable analysis. Results: The post-ERCP cholangitis rate was 19.5%. Cholangiocarcinoma (OR …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Fine-needle non-aspiration cytology (FNNAC) is an easy-to-apply, minimally invasive diagnostic method that contributes to the diagnosis and staging of lung cancer. FNNAC can be performed from peripheral lymph nodes as well as in peripheral lung lesions. This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of FNNAC performed from peripheral lesions or lymph nodes to diagnosis in patients with pulmonary malignant lesions. Materials and methods: FNNAC was applied from a peripherally located mass in the lung, chest wall lesion, or peripheral lymph node using a needle without an injector or active suction. The collected material was evaluated using the cytoblock method. …

Background/aim: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder in which one experiences abdominal pain, tension, cramping, bloating, and changes in the form and frequency of defecation, without an underlying organic disease. Many skin diseases have been reported to be more common in people with functional bowel disease. To our knowledge, however, no previous study investigated the potential relationship between hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) and IBS. In this study, we aimed to examine the potential association between IBS and HS. Materials and methods: Patients with HS and healthy subjects were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. All participants were assessed for …

Selective Venous Sampling In Primary Hyperparathyroidism: Is It Worth Doing?, Selda Gücek Haci̇yanli, Ni̇han Acar, Ömür Balli, Nezahat Erdoğan, Mehmet Haci̇yanli
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Accurate preoperative localization of the culprit gland is the key point for the surgical treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism. Conventional imaging techniques (ultrasound and Tc99m sestamibi scintigraphy) are usually adequate for preoperative localization. However, in some patient groups, additional imaging modalities may be required since noninvasive techniques may fail. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of selective parathyroid venous sampling in patients with unclear noninvasive localization tests. Materials and methods: Among 513 cases who underwent parathyroidectomy due to primary hyperparathyroidism, twelve cases (2.3%) were undergone selective parathyroid venous sampling and were included in the study. Age, …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Next generation sequencing provides new information about the molecular pathogenesis of cancer. We used a targeted NGS-based multiple gene panel comprising prostate cancer (PCa) predisposing genes to assess the prevalence of germline mutations in PCa patients. Material and methods: In a cohort of twenty-one PCa patients with a family history of cancer, a targeted multigene panel consisting of 39 genes associated with hereditary cancer was created and analyzed using the next generation sequencing method. The novel and pathogenic mutations detected were confirmed by Sanger sequencing method. Thereafter, the data obtained were evaluated using different genomic variant classifiers and databases. …

Telogen effluvium, androgenetic alopecia, and alopecia areata are the most common forms of nonscarring alopecias. We would like to present a different perspective on laboratory abnormalities in patients with nonscarring alopecia. Materials and methods: A total of 467 patients (287 females, 180 males) were included retrospectively: One hundred and sixty patients in the telogen effluvium group, 101 patients in the androgenetic alopecia group, 99 patients in the alopecia areata group, and 107 patients in the hair loss group …

Background/aim: For identifying hemorrhagic shock in trauma patients, some objective data are needed. The use of base excess (BE) and lactate values have been originated. In this study, it was aimed to determine the usability of end tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2) in patients with multiple trauma for recognizing hemorrhagic shock. Materials and methods: Patients who were admitted to the emergency department between June 2019 and February 2020 with high- energy multiple trauma were included in the study. ETCO2 and BE values were measured. Correlation coefficients were calculated to determine correlations between ETCO2 and BE levels. Results: One hundred and twenty-two …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: The aim of this cadaveric study was to investigate the erector spinae plane block (ESPB) in lumbar region and to elucidate the possible mechanisms of action of these injections in lumbar radicular pain by means of detecting expected dye dispersion to the neural structures. Materials and methods: Ultrasound-guided lumbar ESPB was performed in three formaldehyde-embalmed human cadavers. For this purpose, a 10 mL of methylene blue was injected into the fascial space between the L4 transverse process and the erector spinae muscles. Then, the cadavers were dissected, the cephalocaudal and lateral spread of the dye was examined, and the …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Being prepared for difficult airway (DA) is nevertheless of great importance. Failed or delayed tracheal intubation (TI) can increase morbidity and mortality, and the pediatric population is more prone to hypoxia. With the development of different types of videolaryngoscope (VL), these have become the device of choice in patients with DA. Our primary aim was to compare intubation times with D-blade and Macintosh blade of Storz C-MAC® in a simulated pediatric DA scenario with this randomized controlled trial. Materials and methods: Children aged 1-5 years scheduled for elective surgery were included in the study. Patients were randomized into two …

Histogram analyses of the resulting XML files were conducted using the R Project 3.3.2 program. ROC analysis was used to find threshold values, and the diagnostic efficiency of these values in differentiating CHS-NCHS was determined. Results: The CT images of 41 CHS (53.25%) and 36 NHCS cases (46.75%) were …
