Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Studies are showing that pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) increases diaphragmatic excursion by decreasing hyperinflation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, there is a lack of knowledge about its effects on the diaphragm thickness (dt) and contractility. This study aims to evaluate the dt and contractility before and after PR in patients with COPD. Materials and methods: All subjects participated in an out-patient PR of 6 weeks and 3 sessions per week prospectively. Dyspnea severity, the disease-specific quality of life (St. Georges Respiratory Questionnaire-SGRQ), pulmonary function tests (PFT), exercise capacity, the dt at the end of the expiration …

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the value of the PET vascular activity score (PETVAS) during the follow-up of patients with Takayasu arteritis. Materials and methods: Takayasu arteritis patients who underwent 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET imaging were evaluated retrospectively. In 8 patients both 1 and 2-h imagings were also performed prospectively. For PETVAS, 9 arterial areas were scored between 0-3 according to the FDG uptake. Results: Forty-six images of 34 patients were evaluated. PETVAS was higher in patients with clinically active disease (p = 0.03) and in the C-reactive protein (CRP) elevated group among clinically inactive patients (p …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is an endocrine disorder characterized by hypercalcemia caused by excessive parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion from the parathyroid gland. PHPT was previously shown to increase cardiac arrhythmias. Besides, new indices, such as the Tpeak-Tend (Tp-e) interval, Tp-e interval/QT interval (Tp-e/QT) ratio, and Tp-e interval/corrected QT interval (Tp-e/QTc) ratio may be associated with ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the relationship between PHPT and the changes to Tp-e interval, Tp-e/QT ratio, and Tp-e/QTc ratio. Materials and methods: We carried out the study with 41 patients with PHPT and 40 control subjects. We calculated …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Patients with various aetiology of pain who underwent erector spinae plane block at different levels were evaluated at the tertiary Algology clinic. Visual analog scale (VAS) values were recorded before the block; 30 min, two weeks, and two months after the block. Medical records of fifteen patients have been obtained. The average VAS decreased from 7 ± 1 to 5 ± 3 in the second month when compared to the values before block (p < 0.01). ESP block can be an option for chronic pain in postsurgical pain syndrome and myofascial pain management.

Background/aim: PSORTAKSIS is a psoriasis registry, which is used for follow-up of patients in Kayseri City Education and Research Hospital, Dermatology Clinic since 2016 in Turkey. PSORTAKSIS includes demographic data, follow-up clinical findings, laboratory output, and treatment information of patients. Here, drug survivals of biologic therapeutics (BT) according to three-year data of PSORTAKSIS will be presented. Materials and methods: Drug survival of BT in PSORTAKSIS was analyzed from 2016 to March 2019. Results: 158 patients (111 of them BT-naive) with psoriasis under BT were enrolled in the current study. Drug survival analysis of patients with ongoing BT (158 treatment periods) …

Background/aim: Vitamin D levels have been investigated in children with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), but the relationship between vitamin D status and inflammation/oxidative stress indicators could not be clearly demonstrated. This study aimed to investi- gate the relationship between subclinical inflammation/oxidative stress and vitamin D status in children with FMF during an attack-free period. Materials and methods: In the cross-sectional study, ninety children with FMF in the attack-free period and 30 healthy children were included. Patients were grouped according to their vitamin D status (< 20, 20-29, and 30-100 ng/mL). The groups were compared in terms of pentraxin 3 (PTX-3), total oxidant status (TOS), and total antioxidant status (TAS). Multivariable linear regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with vitamin D status. Results: PTX-3 levels were significantly higher in patients with vitamin D insufficiency (20-29 ng/mL) than in the group with vitamin D sufficient (30-100 ng/mL). Patients with vitamin D deficiency (< 20 ng/mL) had higher TOS. A strong negative correlation was ob- served between vitamin D levels and TOS (p = 0.003). Subclinical inflammation (PTX-3 ≥ 0.640) and high TOS levels were negatively associated with vitamin D levels. Conclusion: Subclinical inflammation and oxidative stress were negatively associated with vitamin D levels in patients with FMF dur- ing an attack-free period. Sufficient vitamin D levels are important in fighting subclinical inflammation and oxidative stress in children with FMF.
