The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of diabetes mellitus and associated risk factors in rural Kayseri in Central Anatolia and to demonstrate whether glucometers can be used in epidemiological studies. This research was performed in Kayseri in 1994. The research population consisted of 3713 people chosen randomly among men and women of 30 years of age and over. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus was identified as 5.6 %. Alloimmunization can be a significant complication of transfusion therapy in patients with thalassemia and hemoglobinopathies. The aim of this study was to investigate Rh and Kell antigens in patients with thalassemia major and in donors in Turkey. A total of 3061 donors and 155 thalassemic patients from three different blood donation centers in Turkey were the subjects of this study. Antigens of Rh and Kell were determined using the Diamed Gel Test. Fourteen rats were examined and divided into two groups of 7: the control (Group a) and NGF-treated animals (Group B). All animals received a 50 g clip-compression injury to tthe spinal cord at the T9 level. In the NGF-treated animals, NGF (0.1 mg/kg NGF) was injected subcutaneously for seven days. To estimate the effect of exposure to tobacco dust on lipid parameters that increase the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD), 70 female workers were selected from the tobacco processing section of a tobacco plant, and 55 women were selected from the administration selection as the controls. The subjects were homogeneous in terms of primary and secondary risk factors such as age, alcohol intake, menstrual status, physical activity, diet, familial hyperlipidemia and heart disease. Tumor imaging with myocardial perfusion agents has been a focal point for researchers. A kinetic study with 99m Technetium- methoxyisobutylisonitrile ( 99m Tc-MIBI) was performed to evaluate the tumor uptake of this radiopharmaceutical in lung cancer. Thirty-five patients with lung cancer were studied. In 21 (60%) patients, there were regions of high uptake of 99m Tc-MIBI in the lesions. Heart/tumor (H/T), heart/lung (H/L) and tumor/lung (T/L) ratios were obtained. H/T and H/L ratios were 1.66±0.22 and 2.10±0.28 in 2-3 min, and 1.69±0.25 and 2.14±0.27 in 29-30 min respectively. Lupus anticoagulant (LA) and anti-cardiolipin antibodies (ACAs) are acquired antiphospholipid antibodies (APAs), which are considered to be important markers for pregnancy losses and intrauterine fetal demise. In this study, we evaluated 39 patients, who had been followed up in various centers, in order to determine the psychosocial effects of IDDM on children and young patients. The mean age of the patients was 15.58±2.29 years and the mean duration of diabetes was 4.41±3 years. We measured the depression and self-esteem scores in all patients using a standardized questionnaire for Turkish children. Depression was found in four patients (10.3%), and the self-esteem scores of all patients were within the normal range. We studied a group of 59 cases with renal amyloidosis. Mean age (45 male, 14 female) was 33.05±13.04 years. All of the cases had secondary amyloidosis. The causes of secondary amyloidosis were as follows: familial mediterranean fever (FMF) 18(30.5%), pulmonary tuberculosis 12(20.33%), chronic osteomyelitis 8(13.55), bronchiectasia 9(15.25%) rheumatic diseases 4(6.4%), Castleman's disease 1(1.6%), unknown etiology 7(11.86%) Hypertension was detected in 15.3% of the cases. In patients with less than 20 ml/min creatinine clearance (Ccr) hypertension was 20%. Endothelin-1 levels in normal and preeclamptic pregnant women were determined serially to investigate the correlation between renal function tests and the severity markers of preeclampsia. Plasma endothelin-1 levels were determined in 45 serial plasma samples from 15 pregnant women who subsequently developed preeclampsia, and in 43 plasma samples from 25 women with uncomplicated pregnancies retrospectively. Renal function tests, complete blood counts, urinalysis and blood pressure measurements were performed during antenatal follow-ups of these patients. Migraine is considered to be a functional neurological disorder. For several years cerebral blood flow studies have been fueling the controversy surrounding the pathophysiology of migraine headache. Tc 99m-HM PAO SPECT brain imaging was performed during the headache-free period of 29 migraine sufferers (24 without aura, 5 with aura). The findings were compared with those of an age-and sex-matched control group of 17 people. The SPECT images revealed clear interhemispheric asymmetry in the right frontal, temporal and occipital lobes of the brain in the study group. Slight hypoperfusion was observed in patients who had interictal EEG abnormalities.

Urinary-tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common infectious diseases in children; however, the significance of combined infection in the pathogenesis of UTI remains uncertain. Of 48,382 patients discharged from Texas Children's Hospital from July 1, 1991, to June 30, 1994, 1,221 (2.5%) were discharged with a diagnosis of UTI. We retrospectively reviewed the files of these 1,221 patients to assess for concomitant infections and causative microorganisms in patients with first-time UTI, no urologic abnormalities, and no other major diagnoses. Pheochromocytoma is known as chromaffin cell tumor frequently originated from adrenal medulla and results in hypersecretion of catecholamines (1). Semi-thin and thin sections were used to observe the morphogenesis of peripheral nerves regenerating in silicone tubes. The progress of peripheral nerve regeneration across a 10 mm gap within the silicone tubes was examined after 3, 6 and 9 months. The left sciatic nerves of rats were transected. The proximal and distal nerve stumps were inserted into a silicone tube, in which they were separeted by a 10 mm gap. A tissue cable formed inside the silicone tube with regenerated axons. The effects of Rumex patientia and Urtica dioica on levels of blood glucose, plasma amino acids and other parameters, urine excreta, and liver and kidney histology were examined in diabetic rats induced by streptozotocin. Streptozotocin increased blood glucose and changed the levels of amino acids and other parameters, and caused degenerative changes in the liver and kidney. Rumex patientia had some protective effect on these parameters changed by streptozotocin, while Urtica diocia had no protective effects.

The objective of this study was to compare the anti-inflammatory effects of NG -nitro L-arginine (L-NAME) and corticosteroid in Concanavalin A-induced uveitis in rats. Sixteen male Wistar rats were used. After general anesthesia, intravitreal 0.1 ml Concanavalin A (100mg/ml) was injected into the left eyes of the rats. The histochemical localization of thymosin \beta_4 was investigated for the first time in several bovine tissues, using the indirect immunofluorescent technique and the newly applied alkaline phosphatase anti-alkaline phosphatase (APAAP) antibody method. A polyclonal antiserum raised against the N-terminal fragment (1-14) of thymosin \beta_4, showing less than 0.1% crossreactivity with the second b-thymosin in calf tissues, thymosin \beta_9, was used. Positive reaction for thymosin \beta_4 was observed in the cytoplasm of all tissues studied, i.e., bovine spleen, thymus, lung, liver, kidney, lymph nodes and cardiac muscle. This study was planned to compare recurrence of goiters after thyroidectomy in patients who received prophylactic levothyroxine and patients who received no therapy. One hundred and twenty-six patients had been treated by bilateral subtotal thyroidectomy in the General Surgery Clinic of Karadeniz Technical University from 1987 to 1992. Eithy-eight of these patients were included in this study while the remaining patients were excluded as they were non contactable. They were divided into two groups. For most infectious diseases, increased formation of reactive oxygen species is secondary to the primary disease process. Some microorganisms are highly susceptible to exogenous reactive oxygen species such as hydrogen peroxide. Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) remove H 2 O 2 , and selenium is requird for the activity of GSH-Px. Therefore, to assess the status of GSH-Px and selenium in cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), we determined serum selenium concentration and blood GSH-Px activity in 52 patients with CL and in 38 healthy controls.
