Several studies have suggested that pentoxifylline, a theophylline-related drug that decreases erytrhocyte stiffness, may be useful in treatment of ischaemia reperfusion injuries of brain, liver and small intestine in animal experiments. Fourteen Wistar-Albino rats weighing between 180-250 g were used for the experiment and divided equally to two groups. Before the injury, electroneuromyographic (ENMG) data were recorded from right and left sciatic nerves. Right sciatic nerves of the seven rats of group 1 were crushed with a clip. Same lesions were performed on seven rats of group 2 and also pentoxifylline (50mg/kg/day) was applied intraperitoneally once in a day for …

Genetic Polymorphisms In Steroid Hormone Metabolizing Enzymes In Human Breast Cancer, Nesli̇han Aygün Kocabaş
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Epidemiologic studies indicate that most risk factors for breast cancer are related to reproductive and hormonal factors. The evaluation of associations between breast cancer risk and genetic polymorphisms in enzymes involved in hormone metabolism may be a cost effective manner in which to determine individual breast cancer susceptibility. A number of molecular epidemiologic studies have been conducted to evaluate associations between polymorphic genes involved in steroid hormone metabolism (i.e., CYP17, CYP19, CYP1A1, CYP1B1, MnSOD, COMT, and GST) that may account for a proportion of enzymatic variability. An evaluation of associations between breast cancer risk and genetic polymorphisms in enzymes involved …

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection remains important due to difficulties in treatment up to a chronic state. It is considered that free radicals, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant defense play a role in various tissue damages, just as in certain types of viral hepatitis. Since only limited data has been reported concerning oxidative stress in viral hepatitis, a comparative study was planned for patients with hepatitis C. In this study, we searched for erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities in patients with HCV infection who had received and not received recombinant interferon alpha. Four groups of patients [Group I: …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Antisense oligodeoxynucleotides (AS-ODNs) are short DNA sequences synthesized complementary to the mRNA and they inhibit the expression of the target gene by forming a mRNA-DNA duplex. This strategy can be considered to be an alternative therapy for cancers characterized by amplified oncogene activity. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the inhibitory effect of AS-ODNs on two human leukemia cell lines (HL-60 and K562). Cells were treated with c-myb AS-ODNs at two different concentrations and cell proliferation was monitored on the 5^{th} and 7^{th} days of culture. Sense and scrambled ODNs were used as the control. In both cell …

Determination Of Polydispersity Of A Human Colonic Mucus Glycoprotein Using Rate-Zonal Centrifugation And Laser Light-Scattering, Nurten Aksoy, John K. Sheehan
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
The colonic epithelium is coated by a visco-elastic gel, mucus that lubricates and protects the mucosa from the external environment. Mucus glycoproteins (mucins, MUCs) are major macromolecular components with MUC2 representing the major gel-forming secretory mucin. Previously we purified MUC2 from a cell culture environment with either three rounds of isopicnic centrifugation or gel filtration chromatography followed by a single round of centrifugation. In the present work, using rate-zonal centrifugation in a gradient of guanidinium chloride we fractionated this purified MUC2 and its subunits. Analyses of the fractions showed that the unreduced MUC2 molecules are quite large and polydisperse in …

An Alternative Method To The Volume Estimation Of Cavities With Irregular Surface In The Cadaver: Measuring Right Cardiac Ventricle Of The Fetus By Using Mercury, Zeli̇ha Kurtoğlu, M. Haluk Uluutku
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
To find the volume of irregular cavities in cadavers, many researchers have used different methods including filling with any fluid and calculating the volume by usingcomplex geometrical formulas. All of these have some difficulties and disadvantages. In this paper, filling cavities with mercury is presented as an alternative method for volume estimation of the cavities. The volumes of 22 right cardiac ventricles were found by using mercury in 27-34 week-old fetuses. The method was proposed as an easy and sensitive method for volume estimation and comparison of the cavities in the cadaver.
