The aims of this study were to estimate the preoperative thyroid volume in patients with a multinodular goiter by the use of ultrasonography (USG) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and then to compare these approaches with the postsurgical total volume measured by Archimedes' principle. Materials and methods: In this study, we compared 3 methods for the determination of thyroid volume: thyroid volume measured with ellipsoid formula via 2-dimensional ultrasonography (2D USG); the stereological (point-counting) method using MRI; and the postsurgical total volume determined by the fluid displacement technique as a gold standard. Approximately 40 diaphragmatic lipoma cases have been reported in the literature to date. Diaphragmatic lipoma is 2 times more likely to appear on the left rather than the right side. In the present study, diaphragmatic lipoma was evaluated in patients who underwent surgical management in light of the literature data. Materials and methods: This study retrospectively evaluated 5 consecutive diaphragmatic lipoma patients who underwent surgical treatment at the Thoracic Surgery Clinic between January 2003 and April 2012. To evaluate the total homocysteine (tHcy) level, a risk factor for atherosclerosis, atherothrombosis, and insulin resistance, for sex and pubertal state differences in obese children. Its relationship with metabolic and anthropometric parameters was also investigated. Materials and methods: The study involved obese children with a body mass index (BMI) above the 95th percentile who presented with the complaint of excessive weight gain, and healthy children with a BMI below the 85th percentile. To retrospectively review the epidemiologic characteristics of patients who underwent surgery for hip fracture. Materials and methods: Patients who underwent surgery for hip fracture in our clinic between 2006 and 2010 were evaluated in terms of their age, sex, localization of fracture, and surgical procedure. Results: The mean age of 419 patients who underwent surgery for hip fracture was 74.18 ± 11.26 (50-106). Of the patients, 55.13% were operated on for intertrochanteric femur fractures, 33.41% for collum femoris fractures, and 11.46% for subtrochanteric femur fractures. To investigate the success rate and factors affecting success at a smoking cessation clinic. Materials and methods: In this study, 608 patients (397 male and 211 female) admitted to a smoking cessation clinic to quit smoking between 1 January 2006 and 1 June 2010 were investigated. Routine biochemical and hematological tests, pulmonary function tests, exhaled carbon monoxide levels, electrocardiographs, and chest X-rays were obtained from all of the patients. Aim: To determine the demographic and clinical characteristics of xeroderma pigmentosum (XP). XP is a rare autosomal recessive disease that is characterized by cellular hypersensitivity to ultraviolet radiation, development of cancers at an early age, severe actinic changes, and photophobia. Cigarette smoking results in the deaths of millions of people annually. The constituents of cigarette smoke produce oxidants in the cells that result in inflammation, carcinogenesis, and apoptosis. Materials and methods: Indian rice variety IR-532-E-576 was fermented with Monascus purpureus MTCC 1090 (Monascaceae) and extracted with water by boiling. Experimentally induced hyperlipidemia was produced by feeding rats with 2% cholesterol enriched diet for 15 days. In childhood, urticarial lesions are sometimes associated with purpura. This form might be identified as atypical, and may also be related to urticarial vasculitis (UV). The aim of this study was to assess the clinicopathologic characteristics of UV in children with atypical urticaria. Materials and methods: Fifteen children with atypical urticaria were evaluated with medical history, physical examination, and laboratory and skin punch biopsy findings. To compare the growth factor levels in patients with normal and hypospadiac prepuce. Materials and methods: Patients who underwent hypospadias repair were included in the study. The prepuce was excised after achieving successful hypospadias repair with satisfactory functional and cosmetic appearance. Community acquired acute bacterial cystitis (CA-ABC) is one of the most common infectious presentations in the community. This paper aims to provide a rational approach in the management of CA-ABC based on local Turkish data. Materials and methods: The publications evaluating the microbiological data obtained from CA-ABC cases were searched in both Turkish and international databases. Results: Fosfomycin and nitrofurantain appear to be baseline antibiotics while the empirical use of trimethoprim sulfamethoxazole, amoxicillin clavulanate, and first and second generation cephalosporins seems to be unreliable in Turkey. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of this law upon the smoking habits of the employees in this short period of 3 months. The continuous stratified layer of human oral keratinocytes was grown on a cadaveric human dermal matrix in a defined culture medium without a feeder layer. Materials and methods: Human oral keratinocytes from a keratinized oral mucosa biopsy specimen were enzymatically dissociated and cultured in a serum-free defined culture medium, "EpiLife" (Cascade Biologics, Portland, OR, USA), containing a low calcium concentration of 0.06 mM. There is no national screening program for rubella, Toxoplasma gondii, and cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections for pregnant women in Turkey. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of these infections among pregnant women in Denizli province, and to review seroprevalences reported from different regions of Turkey. Materials and methods: Between April 2008 and April 2009, 1268 women were investigated for rubella, 1102 for toxoplasma, and 1000 women for CMV seroprevalences in the first trimester of pregnancy. The effects of dacarbazine, thiocolchicoside, methotrexate, olanzapine, pantoprazole sodium, and 5-fluorouracil on the enzyme activity of glutathione reductase (GR) were studied using human erythrocyte GR enzymes in in vitro studies, respectively. Materials and methods: The enzyme was purified 3333-fold from human erythrocytes in a yield of 44.44% with 4.0 U/mg. The purification procedure involved the preparation of hemolysate, ammonium sulfate precipitation, 2', 5'-ADP Sepharose 4B affinity chromatography, and Sephadex G-200 gel filtration chromatography. There are several studies on tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) intoxication in the literature; however, there is no specific study on amitriptyline, a specific TCA, intoxication. Materials and methods: Forty adult patients who had been admitted to the emergency department due to suicide attempts with amitriptyline were included. Medical and social histories of the patients were obtained. The estimated amount of amitriptyline ingested was determined. The psychiatric support and psychiatric diagnosis were all recorded. Obesity and risk of metabolic syndrome (MS) are rapidly increasing in children. Therefore, criteria for MS were aimed to be evaluated in obese children (OC). Materials and methods: Anthropometric indices and body composition (bioimpedance) analysis (BIA) were compared in 32 obese and 32 normal-weight children. Biochemical parameters were evaluated in OC. Results of OC with/without MS were compared. Results: Subscapular skinfold thickness (SST) was more sensitive and specific than triceps skinfold thickness in the diagnosis of obesity. Brucellosis is a prevalent disease in Turkey. The object of this study was to assess the findings in brucellosis cases with and without complications. Materials and methods: A total of 324 patients diagnosed with brucellosis between 1999 and 2005 were reviewed retrospectively. The diagnosis of brucellosis was established serologically and/or by positivite blood culture. Epidemiologic features, clinical symptoms, and laboratory findings of the patients were assessed in both complicated and noncomplicated brucellosis cases by univariate and multivariate analysis. The aim of present study was to determine the prevalence of cutaneous mycoses in workers employed in different areas of the Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences. Materials and methods: In the present study 128 employees who held different positions (gardeners, lab cleaners, sanitary workers, repair workers, dishwashers, and cooks) at the Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences were studied. Immunocompromised patients are at high risk for the acquisition of influenza and serious influenza-associated complications. However, there are no reports about patients with both newly diagnosed acute leukemia and H1N1 influenza infection. To compare the anesthetic effects of nitrous oxide, isoflurane, and halothane on hemodynamic stability and recovery characteristics in pediatric patients during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Materials and methods: The present study includes 60 ASA I-II children aged 1-12 years undergoing MRI. After endotracheal intubation, patients were randomly assigned into 1 of 3 anesthetic groups. Group N (n = 20) received nitrous oxide and oxygen (N_2O:O_2 60:40), Group I (n = 20) received 0.5% isoflurane and oxygen, Group H (n = 20) received 0.5% halothane and oxygen to maintain anesthesia. The early diagnosis of active tuberculosis still depends on the presence of acid-fast bacilli (AFB) in stained sputum smears. In this study, our aim was to investigate the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of two different fluorochrome stains. Materials and methods: A total of 1013 sputum specimens were collected from 642 patients. Three smears and cultures were prepared from each specimen. Double-blind and prospective laboratory procedures were performed. Slides were stained with a commercial auramine/acridine orange kit (Stain 1), an in-house preparation of auramine- rhodamine/KMnO4 (Stain 2) and a Ziehl-Neelsen stain (EZN). To determine the performance of the Genotype MTBDRplus assay for diagnosis of tuberculosis and rapid detection of rifampin (RIF) and isoniazid (INH) resistance in clinical specimens. Materials and methods: A total of 90 clinical specimens of 57 patients (69 sputum samples, 11 bronchoscopic aspirates, 5 bronchoalveolar lavage, 4 deep tracheal aspirate, 1 lymph aspirate) sent to the Ege University Medical Faculty, Department of Medical Microbiology, Mycobacteriology Laboratory between December 2007 and 2009 during the clinical routine were included in the study.
