Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) is an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase (NOS). Oxidative stress might be defined as an imbalance between protein oxidation and antioxidants. Our aim was to determine in vivo whether ADMA causes oxidative damage. Materials and methods: Thirty rats were divided into 3 equal groups: a control group, a group administered 1 mg/kg ADMA, and a group administered 2 mg/kg ADMA. ADMA was administered intraperitoneally for 7 days. Malondialdehyde (MDA), protein carbonyl (PC) content, and nitrate+nitrite concentrations were measured with serum samples. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities were analyzed with plasma samples. Results: A …

The In Vitro Determination Of Genotoxicity In Peripheral Lymphocytes Of Welders Exposed To Fumes From Metal Arc Welding, Ceylan Şener, Hali̇l Erhan Eroğlu
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Gas metal arc welding is a widely used method in many industrial areas. In this study, the peripheral blood lymphocytes of 23 welders and 25 nonexposed subjects were monitored for genotoxicity. Materials and methods: The blood samples obtained from the subjects were incubated with a culture medium at 37 °C for 72 h. Cytochalasin-B and BrdU were added for micronucleus and replication index. After incubation, the cultures were harvested, stained, and examined. Results: The micronucleus rate (2.165 ± 1.645) of the welders was quite higher than that of those not exposed (1.352 ± 0.978) (P < 0.01). There was a significant difference between micronucleus rates of smoking and nonsmoking subjects. It was found that as the time of exposure to welding fumes increased, so did the micronucleus rates (2.938 ± 1.723) (P < 0.05). A positive correlation was observed between micronucleus frequency and age. The replication index rate (1.026 ± 0.020) of the welders was higher than that of those not exposed (1.019 ± 0.016) (P = 0.01). Conclusion: It is advised that welders who work with gas metal arc welding be instructed and that necessary protective measures be taken because of the risk caused by metal arc welding fumes.

Patients undergoing maxillofacial surgery frequently require nasal intubation. Although awake fiberoptic intubation is the procedure of choice, a fiberoptic bronchoscope (FOB) may not be available in all clinics. Furthermore, the procedure itself requires skill and experience, and cannot be used when the view is obstructed by bleeding or secretions. Herein we describe 3 patients in whom oral to nasal endotracheal tube exchange was accomplished with the aid of a nasogastric tube after placement of an LMA CTrachTM, as no FOB was available.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae is involved in the etiology of many respiratory tract infections. This prospective study describes the epidemiology and clinical properties of M. pneumoniae infections in hospitals of the Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. Materials and methods: From May 2009 to November 2010, 200 patients with respiratory tract infections were enrolled into this study. Due to antibiotic use 51 patients were excluded. M. pneumoniae from respiratory infections was detected by culture, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays. Results: M. pneumoniae infection was detected in 9 (6.15%), 8 (5.3%), and 3 (2.01%) of patients by PCR, ELISA, …

Resistance patterns of Escherichia coli to fosfomycin, ciprofloxacin, amikacin, and cotrimoxazole were evaluated in 2 different studies held in 2004 and 2005. In this study, it was aimed to compare the changes in the susceptibility patterns of uropathogenic E. coli strains to the above-mentioned antibiotics after 6 years. Materials and methods: Between February and April 2011, E. coli strains isolated from urine samples were included prospectively in the study. Results: A total of 502 E. coli strains (358 from outpatients and 144 from inpatients) were isolated from urine specimens between February and April 2011. Extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producer E. coli …

To determine the antimicrobial susceptibilities of various Arcobacter strains isolated from domestic geese, which have great potential for the transmission of arcobacters to humans and animals by contamination of water sources. Materials and methods: A total of 16 Arcobacter strains including A. cryaerophilus (7), A. skirrowii (7), and A. butzleri (2) were examined for their susceptibilities to 20 antibiotics using a disk-diffusion method. Results: All Arcobacter isolates tested were resistant to cloxacillin, cefazolin, optochin, vancomycin, and fusidic acid, and most were susceptible to oxytetracycline, chloramphenicol (except for A. butzleri), nitrofurantoin, amikacin, enrofloxacin, ofloxacin, erythromycin, ampicillin sulbactam, and amoxicillin (except for …
