Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background and aim: This study aimed to determine the frequency of relapse, the risk factors for relapse, and the correlation of relapse with immunosuppressive regimens in patients with granulomatosis polyangiitis (GPA). Materials and methods: The demographic characteristics, the clinical, laboratory, and radiological findings, the immunosuppressive treatment regimens, and the remission and relapse rates of 50 patients with GPA were obtained retrospectively from medical records. Materials and methods: Between September 2014 and November 2017, 15 children were supported with ECPR following in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) in our hospitals. VA-ECMO setting was established for all patients. Pediatric cerebral performance category (PCPC) scales and long-term neurological prognosis of the survivors were assessed. Results: The median age of the …

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms And Quality Of Life In Female Patientswith Fibromyalgia, Gözde Türkoğlu, Yavuz Selvi̇

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The present study aimed to determine the association between attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms severity, fibromyalgia (FM) severity, and QoL. Materials and methods: While the FM group consisted of 113 (74%) patients, the control group consisted of 40 (26%) individuals. FM symptom severity, ADHD symptom severity, and QoL were evaluated using the fibromyalgia impact questionnaire (FIQ), adult ADHD self-report scale (ASRS), and World Health Organization quality of life scale-brief version (WHOQOL-BREF), respectively. Results: It was found that the FM group had significantly higher scores on the ASRS than the control group (p < 0.05). There was a significant difference in FIQ scores and three WHOQOL-BREF domain scores between the FM alone and comorbid FM/high probability of ADHD groups (p < 0.05). We found a negative correlation between ASRS total scores and all other scale scores (except for the social relationships domain score of the WHOQOL-BREF) and a positive correlation between ASRS total scores and FIQ scores in FM patients. ADHD scores would mediate the relationship between depression severity and QoL. Conclusions: Our findings indicated that the presence of ADHD symptoms was related to greater FM symptom severity and poorer QoL. Also, ADHD scores would mediate the relationship between depression severity and QoL.

Nephrological Factors May Cause Kidney Dysfunction In Patients With Common Variableimmunodeficiency, Gökhan Ayteki̇n, İsmai̇l Baloğlu, Fati̇h Çölkesen, Eray Yildiz, Şevket Arslan, Külti̇gi̇n Türkmen

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a heterogeneous primary deficiency characterized by hypogammaglobulinemia, recurrent infections, an increased risk of autoimmune disease, malignancy, and chronic inflammation. Proteinuria is one of the most important prognostic factors causing progression in kidney disease. Proteinuria causes tubulotoxicity, activates inflammatory markers that cause fibrosis, and consequently nephropathy progression. The data is scant in the literature regarding the inflammation and nephropathy in CVID. Hence, in the present study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between tubular dysfunction, proteinuria, and inflammation in patients with CVID. Materials and methods: This was a cross-sectional study involving 27 patients with CVID …

The Prevalence Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine Use Among Turkish Patientswith Primary Headache, Büşra Sümeyye Arica Polat, Ayşe Çağlar Sarilar

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is common in patients with primary headache. However, no study has been reported in which standardized modalities were questioned in a Turkish population. The aim of the present study was to investigate the frequency of CAM use and factors related to it in these patients. Materials and methods: Patients with a diagnosis of primary headache were included in this cross-sectional observational study. Demographic and disease specific characteristics were recorded. The use and effect of 15 CAM modalities were evaluated in accordance with the Traditional and Complementary Medicine Regulations. The patients were …

Background/aim: The negative impact of oxidative stress on oocytes obtained from in vitro fertilization (IVF) patients is a challenge for the optimization of live birth rates. In this study, it is aimed to investigate whether oxidant/antioxidant parameters have a predictive value in terms of determining the count and quality of oocytes. Materials and methods: Catalase (CAT), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), arylesterase (ARE) enzyme activities, and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were analysed in cumulus cells of poor responder (n = 28, oocyte count ≤ 4), normo responder (n = 48, 5 ≤ oocyte count ≤ 14), and high responder (n = 26, oocyte count …

Mid-Term Results Of Total Hip Arthroplasty With Subtrochanteric Z-Osteotomy In Crowetype 3-4 Developmental Hip Dysplasia, Vedat Bi̇çi̇ci̇, İzzet Bi̇ngöl, Tamer Sazak

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is technically more difficult and has higher complication rates in patients with Crowe type 3-4 developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). Due to the difficulties and different treatment options, there is still no consensus on the optimal treatment. We aimed to evaluate the mid-term results of our patients who had undergone subtrochanteric femoral shortening Z-osteotomy. Materials and methods: This study included 37 hips of 29 patients with the diagnosis of Crowe 3-4 DDH between June 2010 and December 2016 and who underwent femoral shortening Z-osteotomy with cementless total hip arthroplasty. Acetabular component was determined according …

Serum Growth Differentiation Factor-15 Analysis As A Malnutrition Marker Inhemodialysis Patients, Di̇dem Turgut, Deni̇z İlhan Topcu, Cemi̇le Cansu Alperen, Sidika Esra Baskin

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Growth differentiation factor (GDF)-15 is related to inflammation and mortality in many conditions. We aimed to determine if an elevated serum GDF-15 level is related to nutritional status of patients on hemodialysis (HD) and mortality. Materials and methods: Routine HD patients (n = 158) were included in the study and followed for 18 months. Some malnutrition/ inflammation scoring indexes (malnutrition/inflammation score (MIS), controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score, and prognostic nutritional index (PNI)), biochemical parameters, and GDF-15 were used to build Cox regression multivariate models to study the association with mortality. Results: Among the patients, 90 (57 %) had a …
