Voices From The Wild Zone: Feminist Awakenings In Selected Works Of George Sand And Kate Chopin, Kristen Findley

My research focused on four pieces of literature to examine awakenings as examples of the female voice. An awakening I defined as a woman rediscovering herself and the world around her. I consulted The Awakening and "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin, an American woman, as well as La Petite Fadette and Indiana by George Sand, a Frenchwoman, to explore different types of awakenings within different contexts. To examine an awakening further, I used a theory explained by Elaine Showalter, a feminist critic, and Shirley and Edwin Ardener, anthropologists, as "The Wild Zone," an area of women¹s culture. …

The work by French author Benoite Groult (1920- ) is an expression of personal discontent. Biographer Fernando Goutier (1978, p. 98) points out that from 1968 to 1975 an increasingly acute awareness of the political and economic situation of Women compelled Groult to write Ainsi soit-elle (1975). Ainsi soit-elle is the point of departure for our study of feminist perspectives in Benoite Groult's writing. The purpose of this research project is to explore the possibilities, and the validity, of a feminist reading of a selection of essays and novels produced by Groult between 1975 and 1993. "The one hundred forty-six poems which comprise Les Sonnets pour Helene represent Pierre de Ronsard's final cycle of sonnets. This study explores the 1584 edition, the last published during Ronsard's lifetime, and focuses on the harmony and unity of the work as a whole. It enhances our comprehension of the sonnets by examining systems of dualities, the most prominent of which are the voices and discourses of two personas, a lover and a poet. This fresh approach to a sonnet sequence provides insights into the composition and themes of the cycle by interpreting the entire sequence as a text about …

Gender And Social Mobility: A Literary Portrait Of Nineteenth-Century France, Chris Jahnke

This project is an analysis of four nineteenth-century French novels (Les Misérables, La Ville Noire, Le Rouge et le Noir, and Madame Bovary) that examines the different processes men and women go through in changing social status. The project begins with a historical summary of the different social classes and women's positions within these classes. Also discussed are the literary conventions of Romanticism and Realism--the two major literary movements of nineteenth-century French literature. The analyses trace male and female characters in their attempts at mobility. The characters are compared to one another and to the …

A popular belief during the late 19^th and early 20^th century held that the image of the last thing seen at the moment of death remained imprinted forever upon the retina of the eye. It was called an “optogram.” This belief developed concurrently with rapid advances made in photography during the historical period, and was seemingly validated by certain scientific experiments in ocular physiology done in the 1870s. Looking for the “photo in a dead person’s eye” soon became an accepted police investigative procedure and an established touchstone of much turn-of-the-century SF and detective fiction. The writings of Raymond Queneau span a period of more than forty years and reflect the multiplicity of his approaches: essays, songs, poems, scenarios for the cinema, translations (from English to French), journal, and novels.

My study focuses mainly on five novels: Le Chiendent (The Bark Tree), Les Fleurs bleues (Between Blue and Blue), Le Dimanche de la vie (The Sunday of Life), Pierrot mon ami (Pierrot) and Zazie dans le métro (Zazie in the Metro), the one that made him known to a wide reading audience. Spiritual, mystic and natural boundaries haunt the writings of Henri Bosco. Critics such as Bachelard have studied Bosco's interpretation of the natural elements and noted his sensitive portrayal of the protagonists with a focus on their unconscious desires by the use of this device. In Le Mas Theotime Bosco has unleashed his artistic and poetic creativity in addition to his passion for nature. Julien Gracq's quest for the "au-delà" is similar in many ways to the Surrealists' attempts to get in touch with the Beyond and to find that mythical and ideal point where binary oppositions are no longer contradictory but complementary. However, he differs greatly from the Surrealists in that his writing is anything but "automatic". Whereas he acknowledges being influenced by the Surrealists' ideas and by the works of certain authors, notably Goethe, Wagner, and Edgar Allen Poe, his works are a unique and carefully constructed web of style techniques, double-entendres, intertextual references, poetic devices, and a deliberate …

Using French and American feminist theory, I analyze Charles Baudelaire's symbols in Les Fleurs du Mal in an attempt to come to terms with symbolic representations of the female that are at once traditional and transgressive.

By examining the images of solids (statues, jewels, metals), lesbians and woman's hair which appear frequently in Baudelaire's text, I reveal Baudelaire's desire to eliminate a woman's generative power and her association with the procreative cycle of nature. His desire for a preoedipal union with the maternal female becomes evident in his early poems and his poems on the subject of a woman's hair. …

Marguerite Yourcenar worked with full consciousness and deep knowledge in the language and landscape of alchemy. She was not only writing books; she was remaking her soul. In the "Reflections on the Composition of The Memoirs of Hadrian", appendixed to the novel, she notes that she writes "with one foot in scholarship, the other in magic arts, or more accurately, without metaphor, absorption in that sympathetic magic which operates when one transports one's self in thought into another's body and soul". This paper is an amplification of Professor Marshall's introductory remarks to her lecture "Marguerite Yourcenar: Her Mythical and Historical Imagination", which was given to the Syracuse University Library Associates on 20 February 1990. At the end the reader will find responses to additional specific interview questions, as well as transcribed selections from a few Yourcenar-Marshall letters. Because of her friendship with Professor Marshall, Marguerite Yourcenar gave to the Syracuse University Library several early inscribed editions of her works.

Though homosexuality is not uncommon in the literary world, few if any writers have chose, like Jean Genet, to place their own inversion flamboyantly center stage. This phenomenon explains the temptation to apply psychoanalytic theory to Genet's work, but the author and his homoeroticism intrigue feminist criticism as well. In the sixties Kate Millett's Sexual Politics praised the portrayal of a homosexual society which, because of its hyperbolic aping of an arbitrary masculine and feminine exposed the oppressive social system of patriarchy. The closing weeks of the last decade brought with them the death of three distinguished world figures: Samuel Beckett, the Irish-French playwright, novelist, and poet; Andrei D. Sakharov, the Soviet nuclear physicist, human rights advocate, and leader in the international disarmament movement; and Birago I. Diop, the Senegalese poet, storyteller, and statesman. The Jean Cocteau Collection: How 'Astonishing'?, Paul J. Archambault

The Courier

Between 1963 and 1971, the Syracuse University Library acquired more than two hundred fifty holograph manuscripts by Jean Cocteau. These are now to be found in the George Arents Research Library for Special Collections, where they enhance an already rich assortment of French manuscripts that have been thoroughly listed in a previous article in the Courier. An abridged history of their acquisition might be told here. The story is interesting, for it includes several of those ironical twists that made so much of Cocteau's life seem like a chassé-croisé with Death, choreographed by the artist himself.
