Kossi Efoui’s sixth novel, Une magie ordinaire, constitutes his intellectual autobiography in that it follows the reconstruction of an “intellectual development” (Paul Ricoeur, 1995) by retracing his own trajectory as a writer in exile, born and raised in a dictatorship, forced to live the last days of his mother’s life away from her. This study explores the role played by private life, history, and literature in the reconstruction of the writer’s trajectory that unfolds in this novel. The country is sinking into a deep economic, financial, political, and social crisis, which has become worse since 2019 and especially after the explosion of the Beirut port in August 2020. In the study, we propose to question the pragmatics of exile in the literary work A crier dans les ruines by Alexandra Koszelyk. This novel immerses us in post-disaster Ukraine. It tells the initiatory, poetic and melancholic journey of a young woman who must forge her identity on the history of her country that we are trying to stifle. The novel puts on stage people uprooted by force; some, attached to their roots, remain close to the irradiated zone; while the others, including the heroine Léna, decide to flee the place definitively to rebuild themselves elsewhere. Drawing from Ken Bugul's novel The Abandoned Baobab, generally considered as a projection of the autobiography of its author, this article shows that the novelist is revealed by veiling, and is thus subject to a self-objectification in which the fantasy narrative echoes the autobiographical narrative. Various self portraits are on display: feminist, rebel, accursed, failed, exiled. The text oscillates between the here and the elsewhere, inversing the fullness lived with the emptiness of there, thus confusing the here and the elsewhere. Three postures of liberation characterize the narrator's attitude: withdrawal, fascination and derision. Through various strategies, while committing to …

The last time I saw Agustin Gómez-Arcos was July of 1997. He was in the midst of an extended summer sojourn at the home of his friends Miguel and Pilar in Tarragona. I remember wandering with him through the streets of this Catalan coastal city, accompanied by Miguel and Pilar's young sons. With Agustín as our guide we toured the city's Roman ruins, and he showed us his favorite mosaics at the local archeological museum. The short story is very much alive in Haitian literature, most especially among women writers. As a favorite genre for describing insecurity on the sociocultural, political and identity level, it reflects the difficult circumstances in which short story writers labor and the obstacles that they encounter in finding a publisher, an audience, in a word, a place in the disporic field of Haitian literature. In particular, the short story genre allows for a formal, stylistic and structural hybridity that suits the writers' desire to experiment with narration even as they seek an appropriate voice.
