Le Flâneur Contemporain: The Wanderer In The 21st Century, Zachary Kocanda

Honors Projects

This creative project is a love letter to walking, poetry, and the French language. The flâneur is a French literary type, the most famous example being Charles Baudelaire. Baudelaire epitomizes la modernité, writing poetry about urban Paris in the nineteenth century. The flâneur's importance as a literary type continues in contemporary poetry. Through fifteen prose poems, the project examines what it means to wander in the twenty-first century.

"The one hundred forty-six poems which comprise Les Sonnets pour Helene represent Pierre de Ronsard's final cycle of sonnets. This study explores the 1584 edition, the last published during Ronsard's lifetime, and focuses on the harmony and unity of the work as a whole. It enhances our comprehension of the sonnets by examining systems of dualities, the most prominent of which are the voices and discourses of two personas, a lover and a poet. This fresh approach to a sonnet sequence provides insights into the composition and themes of the cycle by interpreting the entire sequence as a text about …

Au moyen åge, Marie de France, dans ses Lais, écrit une poésie charmante, animaliere en grande partie. Dans Le Roman de Renard, il s'agit tout entier de l'animal. Avec ces deux oeuvres, la tradition animalière trouve ses débuts, et deux expressions de cette tradition s'établissent: l'une des sentiments mélancoliques, nobles, et élevés qui expriment l'âme; l'autre d'une réalité prosaïque ou populaire.
