This thesis offers a critical reading of three French narratives: Dalila Kerchouche’s Mon père, ce harki (2003), Colombe Schneck’s Les guerres de mon père (2018), and Martine Storti’s L’arrivée de mon père en France (2008). These works combine representations of familial history with the explorations of personal and collective traumas or repression. The study addresses the following dimensions of the texts: 1) The catalyst of intergenerational silence behind these and many other similar works; 2) The textual interplay between storytelling and material evidence; 3) The ways in which the authors combine narratives of familial hardships on one hand, and of …

Le journal examine le film de Moussa Touré La Pirogue et le compare à la conversation actuelle concernant l’immigration du Sénégal vers les îles Canaries. En hommage aux victimes du périple tumultueux, La Pirogue attire l’attention sur l’autre face de l’immigration. Le film analyse les idées à travers le prisme des tropes médiatiques popularisés par le psychologue David Olsen et l’historien Hayden White. Dans le contexte du document, ces tropes explorent le message de Touré sur l’immigration.

Maryse Condé has successively been branded as unseemly drifter, insolent, rebel and subversive, due to the fluidity of her mind and her refusal to be fixated on any obsolete idea. Her stance shows a tendency to evolve with her time in political and intellectual thoughts. If Condé's entire work shows that the author cannot be placed in a specific straightjacket, it is because her writing conveys the urgency of daily experiences. This dissertation examines the figure of double alterity represented by foreign women living in metropolitan France, from the 18th to the 20th century. I argue that although these varied figures offer different trajectories, possess diverse origins, and have been described or described themselves through a variety of literary genres and non-literary genres; they share a common experience revealing unicity. My objectives are, first, to establish the outlines of this shared experience through the analysis of general trends and micro-events; and second, to explore what this analysis has to teach us about French society, past and present. Leila Sebbar grew up in French colonial Algeria where her parents taught French to the indigenous children. The daughter of a metropolitan French woman and an Algerian, Sebbar is a croisée. At the height of the Algerian War, Sebbar left her homeland to pursue her university studies in France. She became a French teacher and made France her home. Sebbar writes in her mother tongue, but she treats it like a foreign language. Although she never learned Arabic and left Algeria, her paternal identity haunts all of her writings. Anchored by the notion of exile, Sebbar drifts between two …
